Protecting your online security There are a few simple steps you can take to protect yourself online, whether you are a private investor or member of a large organisation. We suggest you follow the guidelines below as a minimum.

® Keep your password and security answers to yourself. No member of HSBC Group or its affiliates will ever ask you for your password or security answers.

® Make your password and security answers hard to guess but easy to remember, and never write them down.

® Change your password regularly, and try to use a different password to ones you may have used for other online services.

® Install anti-virus software, and keep your operating system and web browsers up to date.

® Be on the lookout for online scams and fraud. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If an attachment looks suspicious, don’t open it.

® Learn to spot fake e-mails and fake websites. Often they will have a strange e-mail or web address, will ask you to do something unusual, or ask you to logon without displaying the padlock symbol in the website address bar.

® Store your account documents in a safe place and shred them when they are no longer needed.

® Review your statements for any unusual transactions and notify your bank immediately if you suspect any discrepancies.

® Don’t share private information online, including social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.

® If you use a wireless network to connect online, review your wireless device manual to find out how to connect more securely – usually by creating a wireless network password.

® Protect your mobile devices by using a security PIN code, and setting devices to lock automatically. If you use biometrics such as fingerprint identification, ensure yours is the only fingerprint registered on the device.

® Additional guidelines can be found at hsbc.com/online-security.
