The Conductorand Accompanist As a professor of

music at LycomingCollege, Fred Thayeris active with twoprimary interests,

conducting and com-posing. As Director of

Choral Activities atLycoming, he conducts

a diversified repertoirewith the three choirs.

The Choir haspresented concerts in

every state east of theMississippi River.

Foreign tours, approx-imately every three years,

have been in Puerto Ricoand Europe.

Fred Thayer’sgraduate degrees are in

composition with adoctorate of musical

arts from CornellUniversity. His music is

published by E. C.

Schirmer, LawsonGould, Bourne Co.,

Laurendale Associatesand McGroarty Music.

As a member of ASCAP,he recently received his

nineteenth ASCAPStandard Panel award.

He also has receivednumerous “Meet the

Composer” grants. Hiscompositions include a

large scale, five-partmass, two operas, three

works for orchestra, twoworks for band, and

more than 60 choralworks. During the summers,Fred Thayer is theassociate conductorwith the Gregg SmithSingers at theAdirondack Festival ofAmerican Music inSaranac Lake, N.Y. TheGregg Smith Singersand the AdirondackChamber Orchestrahave jointly commis-sioned him to write nineworks since 1982. During the summer of2002, Ave Maria wasperformed by the ElmerIseler Singers at the 6th

World Symposium onChoral Music in

Minneapolis and the

Gregg Smith Singerspremiered his newest

work, Carols. He servesas a member of the

Pennsylvania Humani-ties Council Panel and

as a member of theChoral/Opera Panel for

the PA Council on theArts.

Richard J. Lakey iscurrently the Director of

Music at St. Mark’sLutheran Church in

Williamsport. He is agraduate of Westminster

Choir College,Princeton, NJ, where he

received a Bachelor ofMusic Degree in Church

Music. While atWestminster, he was

awarded the AlexanderMcCurdy Organ

Scholarship, and throughhis music ministry has

given numerous organ

recitals. Lakey earned a

Master of Music

Education at IndianaUniversity of Pennsyl-

vania.

He has been a part-time instructor of organ

and piano at Lycoming,

and for the past 14 yearshas accompanied the

Lycoming College

The LycomingCollege TourChoirConducted by Dr. Fred

Thayer, the Choir has

been widely acclaimedas one of the finest

college musical groups

in the East. Since itsinception in 1947 by

Walter McIver, the Choir

has presented concerts inevery state east of the

Mississippi River.

They have toured inCanada, England,

Puerto Rico, and

Europe. The Tour Choir is

selected each year by

competitive auditionfrom the 120-voice

College Choir, which iscomprised of students

from all academicfields. Approximately

40 students are chosenannually to perform in

and a trip abroad everythree years. This May,

the choir will have aconcert tour in Spain.

In its six decades ofmusic, the Lycoming

College Choir hasperformed hundreds of

concerts, includingappearances in the

National Cathedral, theWashington Shrine, the

Crystal Cathedral, SaintJohn the Divine and

Saint Patrick’s Cathe-dral. The ensemble has

sung with the GreggSmith Singers, theChieftains, and Barry

Manilow. The choir hasbeen featured twice in

the Holiday Celebra-tions at the White

House. This year, theChoir released its fifthCD entitled “SingJoyfully.” As a

premiere musical groupat Lycoming, the Choir

performs annually atmajor campus events,

including FreshmanConvocation, Family

Weekend, Chapel andBaccalaureate services,

Commencement, andthe Christmas Candle-

light Service.

Department offers aB.A. in Music with and

a B.A. in Music withMusic Education

Certification (K-12).Introductory courses

include Theory,American Music,

Electronic Music, andSurvey of Western

Music. More advancedcourses include Theory,

Composition,Conducting, and Special

Topics in Music. Facilities include anewly renovated concert

hall, piano-equippedpractice rooms, a

harpsichord, a custombuilt listening room,

and a fully equippedelectronic studio. The

concert hall featurestwo concert grand

pianos and a two-manual Moller pipe

organ. Majors and non-majors

have the opportunity toparticpate in a variety of

ensembles such as theLycoming Choir, Tour

Choir, Chamber Choir,Concert Band, Wood-

wind and Brass Quintets,

and the WilliamsportSymphony Orchestra.

FellowshipsThe Chamber Choir, thatperforms diverse

repertoire from vocaljazz to major works, is

made up of ChoralFellowship recipients.

Each member receives anannually renewable $500

tuition remission. Byauditioning, students of

all majors may qualifyfor this award.

ScholarshipsMusic scholarships are

available for both majorsand nonmajors. They

range from $500 to$2500 and are renewable

each year. Money isawarded on the basis of

auditions that are heardby the music faculty.

Auditions are required ofmusic majors and are

suggested for nonmajors.

extended spring tour,

and a trip abroad everythree years. This May,

the choir will have aconcert tour in Spain.

In its six decades ofmusic, the Lycoming

College Choir hasperformed hundreds of

concerts, includingappearances in the

National Cathedral, theWashington Shrine, the

Crystal Cathedral, SaintJohn the Divine and

Saint Patrick’s Cathe-dral. The ensemble has

sung with the GreggSmith Singers, theChieftains, and Barry

Manilow. The choir hasbeen featured twice in

the Holiday Celebra-tions at the White

House. This year, theChoir released its fifthCD entitled “SingJoyfully.” As a

premiere musical groupat Lycoming, the Choir

performs annually atmajor campus events,

including FreshmanConvocation, Family

Weekend, Chapel andBaccalaureate services,

Commencement, andthe Christmas Candle-

light Service.

College Music

Department offers aB.A. in Music with and

a B.A. in Music withMusic Education

Certification (K-12).Introductory courses

include Theory,American Music,

Electronic Music, andSurvey of Western

Music. More advancedcourses include Theory,

Composition,Conducting, and Special

Topics in Music. Facilities include anewly renovated concert

hall, piano-equippedpractice rooms, a

harpsichord, a custombuilt listening room,

and a fully equippedelectronic studio. The

concert hall featurestwo concert grand

pianos and a two-manual Moller pipe

organ. Majors and non-majors

have the opportunity toparticpate in a variety of

ensembles such as theLycoming Choir, Tour

Choir, Chamber Choir,Concert Band, Wood-

wind and Brass Quintets,

and the WilliamsportSymphony Orchestra.

FellowshipsThe Chamber Choir, thatperforms diverse

repertoire from vocaljazz to major works, is

made up of ChoralFellowship recipients.

Each member receives anannually renewable $500

tuition remission. Byauditioning, students of

all majors may qualifyfor this award.

ScholarshipsMusic scholarships are

available for both majorsand nonmajors. They

range from $500 to$2500 and are renewable

each year. Money isawarded on the basis of

auditions that are heardby the music faculty.

Auditions are required ofmusic majors and are

suggested for nonmajors.

Lycoming College Lycoming is an

independent, coeduca-

tional college of 1500students enrolled in 32

majors. The College is

college. Located inWilliamsport, Pennsyl-

Lycoming operates

on a 4-4-1 academiccalendar: four-month

fall and spring semes-

ters, an optional Mayterm as well as summer

student ratio is 13:1. Founded in 1812,

Lycoming is one of

The LycomingCollege TourChoirConducted by Dr. Fred

Thayer, the Choir has

been widely acclaimedas one of the finest

college musical groups

in the East. Since itsinception in 1947 by

Walter McIver, the Choir

has presented concerts inevery state east of the

Mississippi River.

They have toured inCanada, England,

Puerto Rico, and

Europe. The Tour Choir is

selected each year by

competitive auditionfrom the 120-voice

College Choir, which iscomprised of students

from all academicfields. Approximately

40 students are chosenannually to perform in

The Conductorand Accompanist As a professor of

music at LycomingCollege, Fred Thayeris active with twoprimary interests,

conducting and com-posing. As Director of

Choral Activities atLycoming, he conducts

a diversified repertoirewith the three choirs.

The Choir haspresented concerts in

every state east of theMississippi River.

Foreign tours, approx-imately every three years,

have been in Puerto Ricoand Europe.

Fred Thayer’sgraduate degrees are in

composition with adoctorate of musical

arts from CornellUniversity. His music is

published by E. C.

Schirmer, LawsonGould, Bourne Co.,

Laurendale Associatesand McGroarty Music.

As a member of ASCAP,he recently received his

nineteenth ASCAPStandard Panel award.

He also has receivednumerous “Meet the

Composer” grants. Hiscompositions include a

large scale, five-partmass, two operas, three

works for orchestra, twoworks for band, and

more than 60 choralworks. During the summers,Fred Thayer is theassociate conductorwith the Gregg SmithSingers at theAdirondack Festival ofAmerican Music inSaranac Lake, N.Y. TheGregg Smith Singersand the AdirondackChamber Orchestrahave jointly commis-sioned him to write nineworks since 1982. During the summer of2002, Ave Maria wasperformed by the ElmerIseler Singers at the 6th

World Symposium onChoral Music in

Minneapolis and the

Gregg Smith Singerspremiered his newest

work, Carols. He servesas a member of the

Pennsylvania Humani-ties Council Panel and

as a member of theChoral/Opera Panel for

the PA Council on theArts.

Richard J. Lakey iscurrently the Director of

Music at St. Mark’sLutheran Church in

Williamsport. He is agraduate of Westminster

Choir College,Princeton, NJ, where he

received a Bachelor ofMusic Degree in Church

Music. While atWestminster, he was

awarded the AlexanderMcCurdy Organ

Scholarship, and throughhis music ministry has

given numerous organ

recitals. Lakey earned a

Master of Music

Education at IndianaUniversity of Pennsyl-

vania.

He has been a part-time instructor of organ

and piano at Lycoming,

and for the past 14 yearshas accompanied the

Lycoming College
