MONTHLY REPORT – JUNE 2020

From the Desk of Chief Investment Officer…

OVERVIEW OF MARKET During the month, Nifty gained 7.5% led by global liquidity, gradual reopening of

business activities and a faster than expected normalisation in certain sectors. Healthy

market rebound during the month was despite India and China border standoff and

subdued 4QFY20 corporate earnings. Among the sectors, Banks, Energy and Auto

outperformed while Pharma, FMCG and IT underperformed the Nifty during the

month. According to Bloomberg, during the month, FIIs were net buyers to the tune of

about Rs 205bn, while domestic mutual funds sold around Rs 37bn.

On the economy front, Q4FY20 current account registered a surplus of US$0.6 bn

(0.1% of GDP) compared to a deficit of US$2.6 bn in 3QFY20 (0.4% of GDP). The

impact of nationwide lockdown saw the the Index of Industrial Production contracting

sharply by 55.5% in April compared to decline of 18.3% in March.

The Bond yields rose during the month. The 10 year benchmark G-Sec (5.79% GOI

2030) closed 10 bps higher at 5.88% as against 5.78% last month.

FUND PERFORMANCE

Notwithstanding the recent broad based market correction, for 5 years period ending

June 2020, majority of Equity and Growth funds delivered annualised returns of

around 4-5%. Majority of Balanced and Bond funds delivered about 6-8%. Fund wise

performance is detailed in the following sheets.

FIXED INCOME MARKET OUTLOOK

With extended lockdown impacting economic activity and revenue mobilisation,

Government (both Central and State) is expected to borrow more from the market.

With no major redemption till end of 3rd Quarter, weekly borrowing is likely to put

pressure on yields slowly but steadly. However, in the short term, market will take

support from abundant system liquidity and likely continuation of the accommodative

policy stance by RBI amid subdued economic activity. Moreover, Central Banks

across the globe also indicated to maintain accommodative policy stance till such time

there is economic revival, Over the medium term, market trend is likely to be guided

by Government borrowing programme, evolving demand supply dynamics, currency

movement and FPI flows.

EQUITY MARKET OUTLOOK

Equity markets are supported by a flush of liquidity, improvement in economic activities

and expectations of a vaccine. The forecast of normal monsoon coupled with

Government stimulus augurs well for rural economy. Further, consumer non-

discretionary demand is approaching pre-covid levels, while a gradual recovery is seen

in discretionary consumption. Even as corporate earnings were expectedly weak,

management commentary highlights tailwinds in the form of normalisation of supply

chain, favourable input costs, lower interest rates and relief from moratorium on

repayments. Given the market correction from its peak and an expected visible

improvement in earnings, equity market offers an opportunity for investors to build a

portfolio comprising good quality stocks, which are adapting to the changing market

dynamics, with strong balance sheets, healthy cashflows, quality management, low

leverage and high dividend yield.
