Mel Zwierink is a Professional Forest-er (R.P.F.), Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.) and a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) with almost 35 years experience in erosion and sediment control (ESC), environ-mental protection plans (EPP), reclama-tion, environmental impact assessments,
terrestrial baseline surveys, Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM), ecological site classification, silviculture prescriptions, soil classification, soil mapping and soil erosion and terrain stability assessments.
Dive in. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, we have a professional development opportunity for you.
Locals know. Benefit from instruction and interaction with experts who work in Alberta and know the local construction scene.
Remember the reason for ESC. The ease and even the possibility of maintaining clean water for commercial, recreation, and drinking purposes depends significantly on good erosion and sediment control during construction.

What is erosion? What is sediment? This course will introduce you to the basics of erosion and sediment control (ESC) and how to recognize the appropriate level of ESC planning and implementation that should be applied to mitigate ESC risks. The participant should come out of the course with a sound theoretical basis for ESC decision-making, exposure to processes that improve the likelihood of regulatory compliance and preventing harm to the environment, and an improved ability to assess ESC plans.
Time: 8:30 - 12 noonFee: $175 plus GST
Includes continental breakfast and one refreshment break; attendance certificate.Register at http://esc161.eventbrite.ca
Introduction to Erosion and Sediment Control
BEGINNER
Greg Henderson was awarded his M.Sc. in Forest Hydrology from the University of British Columbia in 1981 and has been interested in erosion and sediment control ever since. As a practicing Professional Hydrologist he has obtained appointments both across Canada and internationally in South East Asia and South America in forestry,
hydrology and soil conservation. He currently resides in Cal-gary and works as a hydrologist for an oil and gas company. Greg is a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control and looks forward to meeting those with a similar passion in soil and water conservation.

David Dinu, MEDes., CPESC, is an Environmental Scientist and Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) Specialist for Matrix Solutions Inc. in Calgary. He has been a CPESC since 2005 and has over 16 years of experience in ESC and environmental construction operations (ECO) plan design and monitoring of construction sites for environmental regulatory compliance in Calgary and
throughout Alberta. Mr. Dinu has considerable field experi-ence in developing onsite erosion control strategies with client representatives and, subsequently, arranging, super-vising and reviewing ESC site maintenance activities. He is currently vice-president for AECA and has presented and fa-cilitated ESC courses on ESC Design and RUSLE Applications.
Do you create erosion and sediment control plans? Are you interested in taking your designs to the next level? Then this course is for you! We will have presentations from Alberta Environment and Parks and The City of Calgary to help you focus on meeting their regulatory requirements. Erosion potential assessment will also be discussed; gathering information and conducting a site inspection. We will then go over how to prepare a plan, including typical erosion and sediment controls. RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) will become your best friend. This course will walk you through some hands on examples for determining your K and LS values and combining your Best Management Practices (BMPs) for success. Don’t let your planning get stuck in the mud!
