The historyPAWS was first released in 2002 and since then hashad 9 years of constant development. We have issueda major release each year with significantenhancements. Functionality now covers almostevery aspect of documenting and managingindividual audits as well as the overall requirementsof running an audit or risk management department.However, the system is becoming dated. Theinterface makes little use of “drag and drop”technology and performance may be less thansatisfactory over slower network connections.

Since 2007, Pentana has made significant strides inensuring that PAWS meets the requirements of itsglobal clients by adding a web browser interfaceoption for carrying out audits. This makesdeployment easier and enables PAWS to be used overslow network connections, but the application facesthe same user interface restrictions as all other webbrowser applications.

By 2008, our experience of implementing PAWS inclient environments convinced us that auditmanagement software needed a new paradigm.Pentana Vision is the result. We completed the auditengine on which the application is based in 2010 andare now re-building and enhancing the differentfunctional areas covered by PAWS. Pentana Visiondoes not yet have all the functionality of PAWS - youcan’t re-build 10 years of work in a single year - butit is catching up fast.

This paper sets out the history, currentsituation and future plans for the transitionfrom our existing Pentana Audit Work System(PAWS) to the new replacement software,Pentana Vision.

Technical• assist global clients by providing a single interface with a desktop look and feel that gives satisfactory performance over any network connection speed through the internet;

• simplify deployment with automated installation from a website and automatic updates without user intervention;

• improve multi-language support, including double-byte character sets;

• provide better integration by creating secure interfaces that validate data from any source.

Functional• embrace all that was good in PAWS. We are not changing most of the functionality that our existing clients know and love;

• provide a flexible organizational structure and the application of audits to multiple processes, locations, or departments;

• consolidate and standardize where possible, having a single method of review for all items and a consistent screen layout throughout the application.

Look and Feel• modernize and simplify the interface and in particular avoid the limitations of a web browser interface for daily audit work;

• potentially provide customizable business rules and screen layouts that can be changed to meet individual client requirements.

We have fully met our objectives in designing theaudit engine and we are now engaged in re-buildingthe PAWS functional areas using that engine.

Potential audit and risk management software usersnow have a choice with Pentana. They can implementPAWS immediately and upgrade to Pentana Vision ata later date, or they can instead implement PentanaVision today. There are a number of factors to takeinto account in this decision and we will try to giveadvice on the best way forward in each case. Factorsto take into account are:

• Technology issues that might be resolved using the new Pentana Vision platform, such as a geographically distributed team

• The importance placed on having complete audit management functionality immediately as opposed to a build up of features over the next year

• The need for any of the new Pentana Vision features such as audits spanning entities and processes, or use in multi-client environments

• Attitude to risk in relation to a newer technology and product

• An assessment of the ease of transition to the new Pentana Vision interface from PAWS

With limited current Pentana Vision functionality,many potential clients with a tight timescale willchoose to implement PAWS first. As we add furtherfunctional areas over the next year, more new clientswill elect to go straight to Pentana Vision.

The back page sets out in detail a comparison of thePAWS and Pentana Vision functionality to assist inmaking this decision.
