Introduction to IrDEA – Why we Exist Donna Gartland - Director

Welcome to the First (actually second)

Irish District Energy Association Conference

IrDEAEstablished as not-for-profit company in 2017 by Directors David Connolly & Donna

Gartland, with mission:

“To promote and support the use of District Heating and Cooling from sustainable, low carbon and renewable energy sources, and help to

overcome the current barriers facing the sector in Ireland”

Founding Members:

District Energy – more than just a heating solution….

Industrial Waste Heat –increasing plant efficiency

Integrate more Renewable Electricity – Large scale Heat Pumps & Electric Boilers &

RE CHP

Thermal Storage – Cheap Energy Storage for Large Scale

Demand side Response

Less Fossil Fuel Imports –increased security of supply

Customer Safety – no onsite combustion or fuels

Low-cost heat – utiliseswaste and renewable

sources of heat

New market – new local employment

Low-carbon & lower local air pollution

Where we are now…

District Heating Systems across

Europe

Lowest shares in Ireland, Malta, Cyprus

& Greece(the last 3 being in the

Med!)Source: Heat Roadmap Europe & Aalborg University

Fuel is valuable and scarceHeat is cheap and readily available

And there’s heat here….

In Dublin alone it is estimated there is…

• >2,000 MW of zero-carbon heat not being used –available indigenous energy resource

• Equivalent market value of more than €1.2 billion• Potential value to heat suppliers €410 million – DH

provides a New Market for Ireland

District Energy is source agnostic…

It can support and integrate all sources of low-carbon heat, and

many more sources than individual heating solutions can

District Heating is gaining momentum in Ireland…

Project Ireland 2040 National Planning Framework• DH named as key future growth enabler for Dublin, Galway, Cork,

Limerick and Waterford• DH named as key way to meet emission targets• Compact & Sustainable growth – DH more feasible

DCCAE Climate Action Fund • DH named as supported project type• Two of seven projects approved are DH schemes - Dublin City & South

Dublin

IrDEA are calling for a ‘National Heat Plan for Ireland’

• We have national plans for all other energy sectors • We are lagging far behind in our emissions targets• We need a plan that looks at what is best for the

environment, the economy and society • Form part of the new National Energy & Climate Plan

IrDEA main achievements in its first year…

• Commissioning the Irish Heat Atlas in partnership with ESB – increasing evidence base for DH policy in Ireland

• Launch the new IrDEA Website www.districtenergy.ie• Hosting first Irish District Energy Association conference
