    PARAGRAPH

    Meaning

A paragraph is a group of sentences dealing with a single topic or

    idea.

However, before you go further on studying paragraph, it is better

for you to know what sentence is.

    SENTENCE

    Meaning

A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought.

A sentence makes sense because it is a whole idea, not just part

    of one.

Sometimes in conversation, you use only parts of sentence.

For example, somebody may reply to a question with a word or

    two

    i. Not now.

    ii. That one.

    iii. Yes.

In other hand, in writing complete sentences are important so as

to make your ideas clear and understandable.

As it is defined, a sentence is a group of words that that expresses

    a complete thought.

For example, these groups of words are sentences

    i. Makomba walks down the street.

ii. The plane is flying towards north.

iii. The Sun rose late last month.

Sometimes part of an idea is missing from a sentence. Then the

group of words is called a sentence fragment.

Sentence fragment is a group of words that does not express a

    complete thought.

For example, the following are sentence fragments:

    i. Walks down the street. (Who walks?)

ii. The plane. (What about the car?)

iii. Late last month. (What happened?)

    Parts of Sentence

Every sentence is made up of two basic parts: the subject and the

    predicate.

The subject tells whom or what the sentence is about. It tells who

or what did something or what the sentence is about

The predicate tells something about the subject. It tells what is

    done or what happens.

    Example:

    Subject Predicate

A journalist from Sunday News wrote the news.

The students fight for the food.

them tells something about a person, place, or thing.
