1603- 1714: The rule of the royal house of Stuart (or

Stewart). They ruled for more than a century- which was

the 17th century. What is a dynasty? a)A series of rulers all belonging to the same family; b)a

period during which a particular dynasty rules (OEDdefinition).

The Stuart Dynasty is of Scottish origin (James VI of

Scotland who had become the king of Scotland at the ageof 1 after her mother·s abdication of the throne). Queen Elizabeth of the Tudor Dynasty had no heir, as she

was the ´Virgin Queenµ (!) and James VI was the nearestkin to her (her cousin).

James wanted to became the king of England since itwas richer and more powerful than his ownkingdom (Scotland).

The English welcomed James as their king because; He was a natural candidate to the throne as he was

Elizabeth·s cousin so it was a lawful succession, People trusted him as he had a lifelong experience of

kingship (he was 36 by the time he became James I), Most people did not regard him as a treat in terms of

religion as he recovered the hierarchical system of Churchof England although he was a Calvinist as the king of Scot.

Finally there was a male ruler after the long reign (56 years)

ofQueen Elizabeth. James already had 3 children (2 of them were male) when

he became the king so there would be no problem ofsuccession .

Like Queen Elizabeth, James I wanted to rulewithout Parliament.

James believed in ´the divine right of kingsµ, likemany other monarchs.

Acc. to the divine right of kings, the king was chosenby God, and therefore, it was only God who could

judge the king. This idea helped the monarchs establish their

authority over people and Parliament more easily.
