IntroductionThe Canadian Tire Jumpstart Kids Activity Kit (Kids Activity Kit) provides sports and recreation equipment to communities that organize programs for children and youth of financially disadvantaged families. For community organizations that qualify, Canadian Tire Jumpstart covers the cost of the equipment/kit that is ordered and the organization may keep and reuse the equipment.

The purpose of this program is to help give kids a sporting chance to get involved in an activity and have fun!

As part of this program, we have created a resource guide to introduce and explain the recreation activities included in the kit. This resource has been developed as a first step for planning a recreation program. It provides basic instructions on how to organize activities, and also includes suggested references to expand your knowledge of rules and strategies and/or enhance your coaching skills.

Resource OverviewThis resource has three core sections.

1. Background Provides an overview of Canadian Tire Jumpstart.2. Activities Outlines 18 sports and recreational activities that don’t require specialized

facilities or individual fitted equipment.

3. Application Identifies eligibility and application process.

BackgroundCanadian Tire JumpstartEstablished in 2005, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities provides kids in financial need with better access to the life benefits of community based organized sports and recreation. Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities (Jumpstart) helps cover registration, equipment and transportation costs. Kids range in age from 4 to 18 and select their own activities (where facilities and programs are available) reflecting their individual interests, dreams and physical needs.

Developed in conjunction with local community stakeholders, Jumpstart has an extensive network of Chapters that reflect the diversity of each community. These Chapters consist of local organizations that serve children and youth from financially disadvantaged families. Across Canada, Jumpstart works with over 1,700 organizations (e.g., Big Brothers Big Sisters, municipal parks and recreation departments, YMCA-YWCA) to discreetly identify financially disadvantaged children who will benefit from the program. This model helps ensure that the funds are directed to kids in a community who need it most.

In addition, Jumpstart develops strategic partnerships with community organizations and corporations that have common goals in getting kids active and healthy. The Jumpstart Kids Activity Kit provides an opportunity for us to build on these partnerships.

We have helped over 1 million kids since 2005, and facilitate this assistance through a network of over 2,400 community partners. The Jumpstart Kids Activity Kit program will help us reach even more kids across Canada, especially those in previously under-serviced communities/neighbourhoods.

How much physical activity do children and youth need for good health?Children and youth need at least 90 minutes of physical activity a day. This may include 60 minutes of moderate activity (e.g., brisk walking, skating, bike riding) and 30 minutes of vigorous activity (e.g., running, playing soccer). As well, children and youth should reduce inactive time each day (such as watching TV, playing computer games and surfing the Internet) by at least 30 minutes per day.

For more information on Canada’s Physical Activity Guide, visit www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/pau-uap/paguide.

Jumpstart ActivitiesOutlined on the following pages are basic explanations for a number of recreation activities to assist you in planning and/or organizing games in your community. We encourage you to apply your own creativity and resourcefulness to expand on these fundamental elements, and as skill level increases, to teach the full set of rules and corresponding strategies.

See the How to Apply section for more details.

How to PlayObjectives & How to Score

One player/team tries to score by hitting the birdie over the net with the racquet without the other player/team being able to return it back over the net

Points are scored whenever a player/team is unable to return the birdie over the net and back into the playing area

The player or team that reaches 15 points wins a game More advanced players may choose to score to 21 points

Getting Started A coin toss determines who will serve to begin the game

Serving The server starts on the right side of the court and the other team member stands on the left (alternating positions with each serve)

The serve is made from within the player’s court The birdie is hit underhand diagonally opposite the server and over

the net If the other team does not return the birdie or returns it out of bounds,

the serving team gets 1 point The serving team loses the serve if the birdie is returned to them and

they are unable to return it back over the net and in bounds

Faults/Violations A fault occurs when the birdie is not returned according to the rules Typical faults/rules include:

o Birdie does not go back over the net after being struck with the racquet

o Birdie falls outside the boundaryo Birdie is hit more than once before it is returned over the neto Birdie hits the playing surfaceo A player is hit by a birdie or uses their body to hit the birdie

How to Play

Objectives & How to Score

The object is to serve the kin-ball to an opposing team so that it hits the ground to gain a point

The team with the most points at the end of the allocated time wins the game

Jumpstart Soccer (continued)

How to PlayObjectives & How to Score

One team tries to score against the other team by kicking the ball with their feet or heading the ball into the goal

One player for each team acts as the goaltender to mind the net and stop the ball

The team that has the highest number of goals wins the game

Starting the Game A coin toss determines which team will receive the ball to start the game and which team will defend a certain end zone

The winner of the coin toss gets to choose one or the other

General Rules The ball is placed at the centre of the field and the defending team must give the team starting with the ball 9 m (10 yards)

Once the ball is contacted, defensive players may go after the ball After each goal, the team that was scored upon starts with the ball

from centre field

Out of Bounds If the ball moves outside the boundary of the field, it is declared out of bounds

The team that last touched the ball loses possession The other team then gets to throw the ball back into play from the

point where the ball went out of bounds – this is the only exception where a player may use his/her hands to touch the ball

Fouls/Violations No hands:o The goalie is the only player who may handle the ball during the

gameo If the ball touches any other player’s hands, a handball will be

called and the other team will receive a free kick from the point of contact

No rough play:o There is no pushing, tripping or other rough playo Any player caught using rough play gets a penalty, their team

loses the ball, and the other team receives a free kick Offside is a complex rule:

o In simplified terms, offside is called when an offensive player without the ball is between the last defender and their goal

Page 19: Introduction - SmartSimple Software Inc€¦  · Web viewPlay is stopped when a member of the opposing team touches the player in possession of the ball with two hands or ... Please

Page 19

Jumpstart Soccer (continued)

Variations & GamesIndoor Soccer In indoor soccer, the walls act as the lines (of the outdoor field) and

the ball may be played off the wall The standard size of the area is 25 m wide by 61 m long (85’ x 200’) You may need a slightly deflated ball (with less bounce to it) Time is divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each The rules of the game are similar to outdoor soccer:

o There is no offside ruleo The ball may be played off the wallo If the ball goes outside the boundaries, the team that did not touch

the ball last gets a free kick closest to the spot where the ball went out of bounds

Oversized Ball Consider using an oversized ball to change the dynamics and the skills needed for the game

be balanced Games may also be played with fewer players on each team (e.g., 2-

on-2, 3-on-3), but there must be an equal number of players

Number of Supervisors Minimum of 1 There is typically one 1 referee, and each team has 1 coach

Equipment Required 1 football Pinnies to differentiate the teams Pylons for boundary markers

Optional Equipment Field paint or floor markers for continuous boundaries Mouth guards for all players

Playing Time Typical time for a game is 60 minuteso There are 4 quarters lasting 15 minutes eacho There is a brief break in play after the second quarter (first half)

Time may be shortened based on age/skill level or number of players

Playing Area Size Rectangular area with an end zone at each end Formal/league measurements are 18 m wide by 55 m long (20 x 60

yards), with end zones being 9 m (10 yards) deep Shorten playing area based on age/skill level or number of players

Player Formation Generally, offensive player formation is:o Centre: snaps/hikes the ball to the quarterback (QB)o Quarterback: passes, hands off or runs the ball to advance the

ball down fieldo Receivers: provide an option for the QB to throw the ballo Running back: provides an option for the QB to hand off the ball

Generally, defensive player formation is:o Each player takes responsibility for guarding an offensive player

(man-on-man defense)o Players take responsibility for an area of the field (zone defense)

Jumpstart Touch Football (continued)

How to PlayObjectives & How to Score

The objective is to score a touchdown by having a player catch a pass or run with the ball into the opponent’s end zone

The defending team may stop the player in possession of the ball by lightly touching the player with their hand or hands (depending if you play “one-hand touch” or “two-hand touch” football)

The team with the most points wins the game No other physical contact is needed or allowed

Starting the Game A coin toss determines which team will receive the ball to start the game and which team will defend a certain end zone

The winner of the coin toss gets to choose one or the other The team loosing the coin toss has the choice in the second half

General Rules Each snap of the ball is considered a down (play) A team has either 4 downs to reach the opposing end zone or must

move forward by 10 yards in 3 downs to gain a new set of downs All players line up alongside the centre or scrimmage line As soon as the football is snapped or hiked by the centre, all players

may move in any direction Play is stopped when:

o A touchdown is scoredo A member of the opposing team touches the player in possession

of the ballo The ball is thrown in the air and not caught by an offensive or

defensive playero A player with the ball steps out of bounds

The opposing side may intercept the ball when it is being thrown or pick up a loose ball when it is dropped (fumble) and run towards the other end zone

A player may pass the ball laterally to another teammate as long as that teammate is behind them

A touchdown is scored if a player runs with or catches the football in the opponent’s end zone

A touchdown is worth 7 points

Fouls/Violations A violation results in moving the ball against the team that made the infraction back by 5-15 yards depending on the violation

Basic violations include:o A player crosses the line of scrimmage before the ball is

snapped/hiked (minor violation: 5 yards)o A player makes physical contact, such as pushing, hitting,

elbowing, tripping, holding (major violation: 10 yards)

How to PlayObjectives & How to Score

The object of each team is to score a touchdown and prevent the other team from scoring

The ball may be passed, knocked or handed between team members but two hands must remain on the ball at all times

The defending team may stop the player in possession of the ball by lightly touching them with their hands

No other physical contact is allowed

Starting the Game A coin toss determines which team will receive the ball to start the game and which team will defend a certain end zone

The winner of the coin toss gets to choose one or the other The team loosing the coin toss gets the choice at the start of the

second half

General Rules All players line up along the centre/half-way mark The ball must be passed backwards or laterally to a teammate Players may also punt the ball downfield to the other team, and only

those players on the kicking team that are behind the ball when it is kicked may recover the kick if the defending team does not catch it

As soon as the rugby ball is thrown, the players may move in any direction

Play is stopped when a member of the opposing team touches the player in possession of the ball with two hands or when the ball is advanced by throwing or pushing the ball forward to a teammate

A try (or touchdown in football terms) is worth 5 points To score a try a player must carry the ball over the opponent’s goal

line and place the ball down on the ground while in control of the ball After a team scores, the non-scoring team begins play again at the

middle of the field

Fouls/Violations A violation results in awarding the ball to the opponents Basic violations include:

o Passing the ball forwardo A player uses only one hand on the ballo The ball goes out of boundso Diving on the ballo A player makes physical contact with the opposing team (e.g.,

pushing, hitting, elbowing, tripping, holding)

Variations & GamesFlag Rugby Flag rugby uses the same rules

The difference is that each player has a “flag” tucked into their waist on either side (2 flags per player)

Rather than touching the player to stop the play, the opposing team must remove one of the flags from the ball carrier’s waist

How to PlayObjectives & How to Score

The object of each team is to score a point by having a player catch a pass in the opponent’s end zone

The first team to score a predetermined set number of points wins the game

Starting the Game and Initiating Play

The first team pull (throw) is determined by the Team Captains, with one team lining up along their own goal line and a player throwing the disc to the other team

When a team scores a point, the team scoring the point lines up along their goal line and throws the disc to the other team

General Rules As soon as the disc is thrown to start the game or initiate play, the players may move in any direction

No player on the defensive team may touch the disc while it is in the hand of the offensive player

Players must pass the disc to another teammate (they may not run with it)

Players may pass the disc in any direction, even backwards Each time a pass is complete, the person catching the disc must stop

immediately and throw it to another teammate If the disc is dropped, knocked down to the ground by a defensive

player or intercepted by the defensive player, there is a change in possession

The player who has the disc has 10 seconds to attempt a pass or the team forfeits possession

A point is scored if a player catches the disc in the opponent’s end zone

No physical contact is allowed

Fouls/Violations A violation occurs when the team in possession of the disc breaks the rules

A violation results in awarding the disc to their opponents Basic violations include:

o The disc goes out of boundso A player holds the disc for more than 10 secondso A player makes physical contact (e.g., pushing, hitting, elbowing,

tripping) with the opposition
