MayIasktheDeansespeciallyofCICS,CEA,CNStoseeifsomethingcouldbedonetolessenthispercentageofacademicfailures?PleasecoordinatewiththeGuidanceCenter.

TherearemorestudentswhovoluntarilygototheGuidanceCentertoseekcounselingthanthosereferredtobydifferentoffices,whichisagoodsign.Surprisingly,therearemoremalestudentsthanfemalestudentswhogototheGuidanceCenter.

Positively,ourfreshmenstudentsbelievethattheyalreadymanifestatleastinitiallyintheirbehaviorthefourcorevaluesoftheuniversityinthefollowingorder:socialinvolvement–always,Christianspirit–often,competence–often,andcreativityonlysometimes.

Theimmediatechallengeisfortheadministration,faculty,deans,andorganizationstoproviderelevantlearningopportunitiesthatwillimproveontheacquisitionofthesevaluesandparticularlystimulatethecreativehigherthinkingskillsofourstudents.

Itappearsthatcreativityisthecorevaluethatneedstobedevelopedmostinourfreshmen.IhavegiventhechallengeayearagototheEnglishdepartmentfacultytocomeupwithacreativethinkingmanualthatcouldbeusedbyourfreshmen.

Whatisdisconcerting,however,forusaseducatorsisthelowsuccessrateorhighattritionrateofourstudentpopulation.Only38percent(moreorless)ofourincomingfirstyearstudentswilleventuallygraduateintheexpectedyearoftheirgraduation.Theother20percentwilllingeraroundandextendtheiryearofstudy.Whathappenedtothe43percent?Manyofthemwilldropoutduringthecourseoftheirstudy.

Whateverthereasons,40-60percentsuccessrateisnotsomethingthatweshouldbehappyabout.Inacademics,thisisafailinggrade.Moreimportantly,itmeansmoreexpensesfortheparents,moretimewasted,lossofself-confidenceandself-esteemforourstudents.
