Present-day Loma Linda began in the 1800s as an outpost of the San Gabriel Mission. Father Francisco Dumetz came upon a prominent hill set in a serene valley, and it was this place upon which he decided to build the Asistencia. Time passed and the Mexican Government parceled the land into expansive homesteads, known as “ranchos.” One of these 78,000 fertile acres came to be known as Rancho San Bernardino. With its favorable climate, bountiful lands, and beautiful scenery, Rancho San Bernardino was heralded as an outstanding place for economic opportunities. In 1850, Rancho San Bernardino entered a new era. The western expansion of the United States had reached the Pacific Coast and in that year California had entered the Union as the 31st state. The Rancho was now part of a region opened to pioneering Americans in search of a new place to build their dreams. It was the tenacious will and industrious spirit of these early American settlers which introduced oranges and other citrus crops to the area. Vast citrus groves transformed the Rancho into a productive and profitable economic center. The weather was ideal and the good news spread quickly. By 1888, land speculators and developers had lured thousands of buyers and health seekers to the “Mound City.” In an attempt to capitalize on the region’s “health boom,” an 80-room hotel was built and named the Mound City Villa. The villa went through several changes of ownership until 1905 when it was converted to a Seventh-day Adventist sanitarium. Over 100 Years of Service Starting in, the unwavering dedication of those who promoted healthful living and provided care for the sick has shaped and sustained one of the leading health-sciences educational institutions and hospitals in the nation. From humble beginnings, Loma Linda University and Loma Linda University Medical Center have grown to be leaders in patient care and pioneer of life-saving medicine. The property where Loma Linda now stands was first developed as a plush Mound City Hotel during the 1887-1888 boom days. Following the 1890 depression, the hotel complex failed. A group of investors bought the failed property, invested $155,000 in hopes of making it one of the finest health resorts in Southern California. This effort also failed. When the property came to the attention of John Burden, one of the founders of Loma Linda, the asking price of $110,000 was prohibitive for the fledgling Seventh-day Adventist Church. The price continued to drop, however, until the owners ordered the property sold for $40,000. With private funds, John Burden and others obtained an option on the property and paid off the note, then discounted to $38,900, before the end of the year. On August 26, 1905, Loma Linda Sanitarium was incorporated; six weeks later, on October 13, the first two patients were admitted. Loma Linda was in business! The present 11-story Loma Linda University Medical Center opened on July 9, 1967, an outgrowth of the original Sanitarium on the hill. With the completion of Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital in late 1993, nearly 900 beds are now available for patient care, including at Loma Linda University East Campus, Loma Linda University Heart and Surgical Hospital and Loma Linda University Behavorial Medicine Center. LLUMC operates some of the largest clinical programs in the United States in areas such as neonatal care and outpatient surgery and is recognized as the international leader in infant heart transplantation and proton treatments for cancer. Each year, the institution admits more than 33,000 inpatients and serves roughly half a million outpatients. As the only tertiary-care hospital in the area, LLUMC is the only Level 1 Regional Trauma Center for Inyo, Mono, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Introduction

introductionHistory

Loma Linda is a small university town that maintains a large presence in the Inland Empire and throughout the world. Long noted for its leading role in medical science and higher education, Loma Linda University Medical Center has been a national center for health, wellness, and research. Located in the eastern San Bernardino Valley, Loma Linda is bordered on the east by Redlands, on the west by Colton, and on the south by the San Jacinto Mountains and the Riverside County line.

Over 100 Years of ServiceStarting in, the unwavering dedication of those

who promoted healthful living and provided care for the sick has shaped and sustained one of the leading health-sciences educational institutions and hospitals in the nation. Loma Linda University and Loma Linda University Medical Center, as it is known today, proudly celebrate its 100 year anniversary. introductionIn December, 1905, Loma Linda accepted its first

nursing students, and on July 10, 1907, the first Loma Linda nurse commencement was held. Today, more than 3,000 students study in eight schools and the Faculty of Religion. The schools of Allied Health Professions offer more than 55 programs, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Science and Technology, and the Graduate School. Curricula offered range from certificates of completion and associate in science degrees to doctor of philosophy and professional doctoral degrees. Student from more than 80 countries around the world and virtually every state in the nation are represented in Loma Linda University’s student body.

Loma Linda has truly grown and prospered beyond the early leaders’ expectations. It has emerged into a health-sciences university and medical center internationally known for advanced technology, service-oriented medical care, and education.
