INTRODUCTION FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Welcome to the fifth year of the Waterlooville Music Festival. Theaim of this week is to bring music into St. George’s Church andinto the centre of Waterlooville, for the whole community to enjoy.This year is no exception. Together with Waterlooville BusinessAssociation’s “Market Place Music” on the first day of the Festival,you are invited to over 50 concerts, featuring soloists, choirs,instrumental groups and whole bands. It’s really good that onceagain local schools are taking part in the Festival. Students areperforming in the afternoons and classes are coming to the specialschool workshops featuring Noah and his drums and a sensorymusic morning. Among the eight days of music the Festivalwelcomes for the first time this year the dance band “Contrast”playing well known melodies from the 60s and 70s. Also new isHampshire Music Service’s “Songs from Joseph” in which childrenfrom three local schools are combining for a concert on the lastSaturday lunchtime. Tickets for this will sell out very quickly somake sure you get yours now!
The Festival Organisers are greatly indebted to local businessesand councils for their continued support, without whichWaterlooville Music Festival could not continue. The individualsponsors are listed at the end of this programme, but specialappreciation is given to Hampshire & Isle of Wight CommunityFoundation as main sponsors of the Festival, and to Larcomes LLPSolicitors, J. Edwards & Sons Funeral Directors, Moore’sTraditional Funeral Directors and Havant Borough Council each ofwhom has sponsored a whole event. are free of charge including Wednesday afternoon, when there is a filmpresentation of “My Fair Lady” at 2.30.pm.
EveningsYour ticket includes a free drink either during the interval or after the
performance (except Saturdays, when there is a licensed bar). Hot drinks arebeing served at the front of the Church, cold drinks at the back. You arewelcome to wander around the stalls before and after the performance, or
during the interval. If you wish to make a purchase or buy tickets for futureconcerts please see a Steward.
Saturday Lunchtime, 12th June“Market Place Music” takes place throughout the town centre. There are Music
Festival Events at the Church Fête with refreshments available, and areasonably priced Barbecue lunch.
Saturday EveningsOnly drink purchased at the Festival Bar may be consumed on Churchpremises - inside or outside. You must be over 18 to buy alcoholic drinks

Contrast was formed in 1982 by a group of the Royal Marine Bandwho were serving on the Royal Yacht Britannia performing toroyalty and world dignitaries. Over the years the band has
brought in additional new talent as it has toured the world, withaudiences dancing the night away to their exciting big band sound.

Philip Drew started taking piano lessons at the age of8 and his first involvement with church music was inthe choir of St Mark’s Church, Portsea. He went on tolearn the organ with the Organist and Choirmaster,Russell Shepherd. He read for an Honours degree inMusic at the University of Durham where he was alsoa choral scholar in the Cathedral Choir. He continuedhis organ studies first with Conrad Eden and laterwith Alan Thurlow.In 1979 he became organist and choirmaster at
Christchurch, Llanishen in Cardiff. And in 1981 gained the Associate diploma ofthe Royal College of Organists, in 1985 the Choirmasters diploma of the RoyalCollege of Organists and in 1989 the Associate of the Royal College of Musicdiploma in Singing Teaching. In 1997 he was elected to a Fellowship of the Guildof Musicians and Singers and in 2000 was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by theNorth and Midland School of Music.Since 1982 he has been Organist and Choirmaster at Holy Spirit Church, Southsea.He has given organ recitals and accompanied choirs and choral societies in manyvenues in South Wales and Southern England. He also conducts the choirsWyndcliffe Voices and Cantores Vagantes, and composes. To date, he has written130 pieces and received over 200 performances; in Normandy and Louisiana aswell as in Britain. Two percussion pieces for the London College of Music gradeexams have been published by Stainer and Bell and 13 of his works are publishedon the SibeliusMusic website.

Malcolm graduated with a degree in Music from Royal HollowayCollege, University of London, where he studied Organ with JohnPorter. As a member of their Schola Cantorum he sang in many ofthe cathedrals in Southern England. For eleven years he wasorganist and choirmaster of St Mark’s church in Portsea. He hasperformed as a soloist for the Lee Singers and for the MidhurstChoral Society.
Malcolm was appointed conductor of Portsmouth Baroque Choir inJuly 2008. He previously sang with the choir for many years andheld the post of assistant conductor. He is also assistant conductorof the Renaissance Choir.
Portsmouth Baroque Choir perform a wide repertoire, from theRenaissance period to works of contemporary composers, includingseveral written especially for the choir.
Concerts are performed regularly, in churches and cathedrals inPortsmouth and the surrounding district. The choir participated inthe Portsmouth Festivities in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Don Lloyd, the Musical Director of the Festival’s ‘Last Night of theProms’ introduces his specially chosen guest musicians presentingan entertaining evening of truly magical talent.
Polly Burford (soprano) joined her first choir whenshe was 8 years old, sang at the Royal Albert Hall inCarmina Burana when she was 14 and has alwaysloved singing. In 2001 she joined Arundel based choirSounds Sacred where she was quickly identified ashaving potential and encouraged as a soloist. She nowregularly performs in West Sussex, is being trained byCharles Corp and recorded her first CD last year.Peter Rogers has been playing the guitar since theage of 9 and mostly began with popular styles on theelectric guitar. He has since built up a collection ofmany different genres of music, and now specialises inmodern classical, Spanish and acoustic guitar styles,within which he has become an accomplishedperformer. Recent performance venues includeChichester Cathedral, the Chichester Music Festivaland the Festival of Flowers 2010 at ChichesterCathedral.Chris Coote LTCL started playing the piano at the ageof 4, and performing from the age of 11. He attendedmaster classes for many years at Morley College underMartino Tirimo and Gwenneth Pryor, and has alsoparticipated in classes taught by Philip Fowke, PhilipMartin and Roger Vignoles. He has taken lessons withJean Anderson and currently with Fiona Cameron, bothretired professors from the Royal Academy of Music.

His main musicalinterest is playing in the gypsy jazz style of Django Reinhardt.HAZEL TRIPP – Violin – is a music teacher and freelance violinist.She plays for the Guildford Symphony Orchestra, the WaterdenQuartet and the Surrey String Quartet. She enjoys performing inmany styles including folk and jazz. Her jazz inspiration is derivedfrom the playing of the late, great, Stephane Grappelli.TIM NOWELL - Bass – is well into his 4th decade of playing bassguitar. He has been in a wide variety of bands but in particular bluesand jazz acts. He has played all over the UK supporting some of thetop British and American blues acts. He has written, recorded andproduced a number of blues albums.

The Choir also sings atvarious special services andevents both locally, in the
Cathedral and the Diocese ofPortsmouth and also internationally,whilst on tour. The Choir has made anumber of recordings, and hasperformed before importantdignatories, including HM The Queen,as well as on BBC tv and Radio.They join us at the WaterloovilleMusic Festival to sing glorious choralmusic in a church setting.
