Introduction

History of RASWA
• RASWA was founded in 1831
• First PRS was the “Fair & Cattle Show” in 1834
• Became the Perth Royal Show in 1890
• Major land owner of the Claremont Showground
• WA’s major community event
• RASWA is a Not For Profit organisation
• Costs RASWA $11M each year to stage the PRS
History of RASWA Food Competitions
• There is a long history of judging food and beverages by the Royal
Agricultural Society of WA (RASWA)
• Wine has been judged for over 175 years
• Dairy was introduced as a competition 62 years ago
• Beer was introduced in 2007 and includes both commercial and amateur
brewers
• Up until 2017 known as the “Premium Produce” competitions
• These competitions until 2017 were only industry relevant and there was
no consumer awareness or connection to them.
Perth Royal Food Awards
• The Premium Produce Competitions were relaunched as the Perth Royal Food Awards in
2017
• The purpose of this re-branding was to extend the message to consumers and educate
them about the quality and integrity of these Awards and produce
• Furthermore, to guide consumer purchasing behaviour and support local produce
• Award winners are supported with “Winners medal” artwork to use on packaging
• Winners also receive opportunities to showcase their produce at Perth Royal Show and
RASWA events and receive a promotional pack of hints and tips
Perth Royal Food Awards
• 718 bottles of red wine, 1065 white, 76 sparkling, 40 fortified judged
• 5 judges tasted 602 beer entries, using 3010 glasses in the process
• 5 judges judged 37 different sausages in one morning
• 4 judges judged 210 jars of condiments
• 335 dairy entries
• 6 judges nibbled on 85 blocks of luscious chocolate
• 17 judges, tasted 132 loaves of bread, 29 cakes and 17 pies and
sausage rolls
New competitions 2017/2018
• Up until 2017 there were 5 major competitions
• In 2017 Sausages and Pantry Goods were introduced as new categories of the
Food Awards. Chocolate was also separated from the Dairy Awards and
became a standalone competition
• In 2018, the expansion has continued as Cider, Smallgoods, Alternative Milk
Products and Beef, Lamb & Pork have been introduced
Taste WA• Taste WA was introduced by RASWA as a premium food and beverage offering at
the 2016 IGA Perth Royal Show
• Taste WA aligns with the Perth Royal Food Awards rebrand and focus
• This provided an opportunity for Perth Royal Food Award winners to be highlighted
as part of the menu offering at Taste WA
• Through main stage talks and demonstrations PRFA winners could showcase their
products.
Channel Nine - Media
• 2016 & 2017 Taste WA 30 minute program on Channel Nine highlighted
Perth Royal Food Award Winners and key sponsors
• Channel Nine were a part of the Taste WA Pavilion at the 2017 IGA Perth
Royal Show promoting their own Food program
• 2018 focus has been more on PRFA and even more about producers

• 2018 Perth Royal Food Awards Opening held at Channel Nine Studios and
included 4 live bulletins during the morning program as part of Today News
with Louise Momba and Scherri-Lee Biggs
• In August/September RASWA has partnered Ch 9 and Delish and over 8
weeks showcase 8 PRFA winners and start the consumer positioning

2018 so far…
Perth Royal Beer Awards Carnival
• For the first time in history, the Perth Royal Beer Awards opened their doors to the
public
• The Perth Royal Beer Awards Carnival was staged on July 14 and 15
• Award winners from the various categories were released during the Carnival and all
attendees had the opportunity to taste award winning commercial beers
• There was a record number of 731 beers entered this year making it the best year
yet!
• Similar food Carnivals for other PRFA food competitions
2019 and beyond
• PRFA will become bigger and better in 2019
• There will be even more new competitions
• We will launch a dedicated Perth Royal Food Award website
• We will continue to build on our media partnership with Channel Nine
• RASWA will look for retail partnerships and promotion of the Perth Royal
Food Award brand
• More food festivals similar to the Beer Festival will be developed
• And…….
• Open up discussion about incorporating Horticulture in the PRFA
• Realise expansive nature of horticulture
• Focus – Primary level, Value added level, Producer level
• In 2 years PRFA has gone from 5 categories to 12 in 2018 with many sub
categories… and growing
• RASWA staff will be available at the Networking event tonight to chat about
the prospects
