WEEK 3: Systematic Planning in the Use of Media and Evaluation

Introduction

Fourth grade teacher Dora Brady is sitting at her desk after school, looking at the scores that her class made on the long division quiz she gave today. She is reviewing the students’ performance in her mind and recalling how she taught the students.

She is working on new ways to teach the kids next week using power point. She is drawing upon her knowledge on something called Instructional Design in her thinking.

A point to ponder…

The Instructional Design Process

Another way to define instructional design is to describe the process involved in

the systematic planning of instruction.

Instructional designer’s job is to answer three major questions (Mager, 1984):

• What are the goals of the instructionWhere are we going

• What is the instructional strategy and instructional mediumHow will we get there

• What should our tests look like? • How will we evaluate and revise the

instructional materials?

How will we know when we have

arrived?

Six Basic Principle

Determine student needs

Determine objective

Develop evaluation procedure

Design and choose delivery strategy

Employ instruction system

Evaluate overall system

ASSURE Model

The ASSURE model was developed by Heinich, Molenda, Russell, Smaldino (1999)

An instructional model for planning a lesson and the technology that will enhance it.

ASSURE Model

Analyze Learners

State Objectives

Select Material and

Media

Utilize Media and Materials

Require Learner

Participation

Evaluate and Revise

The ASSURE model contains six steps and the letters in ASSURE

form an acronym.

ASSURE Model

The ABCDs can be used to create a well-stated objectives:

State Objective

Audience – specifies the learner for whom the objective is intended

Behaviour – capability need to be demonstrated

Conditions – under what condition are the learners to demonstrate the skill taught

Degree – how well do you want the student to demonstrate their mastery?

ASSURE Model

Identify the ABCDs in the objective statement below:

The Drawing class B will be able to identify and draw two

perspective drawing using pencil and ruler with 100% accuracy

kindergarten class will identify the colors, red, green, and blue using

blocks 9 out of 10 tries.

Create your own objective statement

State Objective : Activity

Classification of objectives:

State Objective

cognitive domain - includes content knowledge and the development

of intellectual skills

affective domain - includes feelings, values, appreciation,,

motivations, and attitudes

motor-skill domain - includes physical movement, coordination, and

use of the motor-skill areas

interpersonal domain - building relationships, interacting positively

with others, working cooperatively in teams
