Introducing the ESPREssO
Action DatabaseJaime Abad & Susanne Ettinger, BRGM
ESPREssO First Stakeholder Forum, Bonn, 4th May 2017
What is the ADB?
> The ESPREssO Action Database strives to be a
database of good examples and good ideas for
DRR and CCA
> Let’s not reinvent the wheel: by gathering
stakeholder experience in a centralized way we
can learn from what has worked in the past, why it
worked and how to find ways to adapt those
solutions to other contexts and/or scales.
> This analysis will serve as the basis for the
ESPREssO Vision Document and Guidelines.
What is an “Action”?
> Broad definition: Any programme, project or initiative dealing
with disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
• Variety of types: scientific research projects, codes,
legislation, financial instruments, land-use plans…
• Variety of scales: from municipal to European
• Variety of challenges: DRR, CCA, transboundary issues,
science-policy interfaces…
> The ADB attempts to measure an action’s beneficial impacts
• Desirable outcomes for risk reduction: Sendai protocol
• Difficulties between DRR and CCA: Birkmann & von
Teichmann (2010)
• Transformative change: UNDP/UNESCAP
Benefits of the ADB> SHARE
Make your experience available to future risk managers.
Contribute to ESPREssO by sharing your own experiences in managing disaster risks
and adapting to climate change. Our questionnaire will allow you to evaluate actions in
terms of effectiveness and overcoming barriers.
> DISCOVER
The solution to your risk reduction or climate change adaptation challenges may have
already been implemented elsewhere.
Find out about initiatives you may not have heard of yet, how they achieved their goals
and created lasting change.
> TRANSPOSE
Build a disaster risk reduction or climate change adaptation action that works for your
region by transposing effective solutions to your own social, cultural and geographical
context.
> HARMONIZE
Help us work towards a European Union without boundaries for Disaster Risk
Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation by participating in the discussion about how
to reduce incoherencies and build a common approach for coordinated action.

this is likely to evolve in phase 2 of the
ADB development.
ESPREssO-ADB at the Stakeholder Forum
> The ESPREssO Stakeholder Forum is a great
opportunity to contribute to the ADB.
> A member of the ADB team will be present at each of
the 3 parallel workshops
• 1 or more actions will be selected during each
workshop to be added to the ADB
• We will be there to help you if you have any
questions
> You can also add an action during a break or at
home via the website
Thank you for your attention…
…and thank you for contributing to
the ESPREssO-ADB!
