The Majors: Tom Cruise reinvigorates his signature franchise (and just possibly his career) with Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. This newest installment finds super agent Ethan Hunt and his crack team disavowed by the government, on a mission to clear their names and save the world from nuclear war.
A reformed smuggler (Mark Wahlberg) is forced to take on one last job to repay the drug kingpin (Giovanni Ribisi) threatening his family in the action flick Contraband.
The Idiotbox: “The Wire” creator David Simon brings all the human drama and rich cultural history of the Big Easy to life in HBO’s “Treme:” Season 2. Set in the aftermath of Katrina, the series follows a diverse ensemble of characters as they try to rebuild their lives amidst tragedy.
Seth MacFarlane’s other series, “American Dad,” marks its 100th episode with Volume 7. The animated comedy follows a gung-ho CIA agent and his off-kilter family, which includes an alcoholic alien and a German goldfish.
Gear up for the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton remake by revisiting some of the highlights from the original “Dark Shadows” TV series. The “Best of Barnabas” and “Fan Favorites” collections cover the essentials from the gothic vampire familial saga.
The Horror! The Horror!: Return to the world of Pagan Scotland in The Wicker Tree, a thriller from the writer-director of the original cult classic The Wicker Man.
Stranger than Fiction: The Flaw investigates the root causes of the economic meltdown, searching for a solution to income inequality before the next crisis. The Sundance doc is a dramatic and accessible primer on dry economic concepts.
From the Vault: Set to the sounds of the ‘70s R&B scene, Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) crafted a personal story of life on the South Side of Chicago in Stony Island. The film follows the only white kid on the block (Richie Davis) as he tries to form a band with his best friend (Stoney Robinson). It’s a great time capsule, chock full of groovy music and gritty locations.
Under the Radar: Lisa Cardellini and Michael Shannon star in the affecting drama Return, a modern-day take on Coming Home. Kelli (Cardellini) returns from service in Iraq to her husband (Shannon) and children, but struggles to restart her old life after the horrors of war.
Dennis Farina gives a career performance as a small-time hustler forced to confront the emptiness of his life in The Last Rites of Joe May.
Blu Notes: A throwback to old school horror, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, set in an old hotel, builds tension with creepy atmosphere rather than relying on gore or cheap scares.
Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave star in Camelot, the classic Oscar-winning musical adaptation of the King Arthur legend. This edition includes a photobook, a new featurette and a soundtrack sampler.
The comedy duo of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello made the jump to feature films with the classic Buck Privates, about two con artists who find themselves in the army.

Here is your in-depth, S.H.E.I.L.D. file-esque guide to all you want to know about the greatest superhero movie to date, The Avengers (sorry Batman, sorry Spidey this isn’t your year). If you need something to geek-out over as the hour of the midnight release draws closer, just read on.
THE AVENGERS ASSEMBLE Marvel hero movies always end with S.H.I.E.L.D. members Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) recruiting each respective superhero to join an ambiguous initiative just in case an end-of-the-world scenario were to present itself.
The opportunity arises when the royally pissed off god, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), decides to exact revenge on Earth while striking a deal with the Chitaur (a big, bad alien race) to do so. After stealing the Tesaract, a cosmic cube with unlimited power, Loki unleashes more than he could imagine, and it’s up to the Avengers to stop him.
With the help of Agent Romanov, aka The Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) are called in to assemble. But getting them to work with each other proves no easy task.
“They get pissed with each other and they argue about petty shit,” explained Jackson about the herding of the heroes. “They can be smart asses, but they eventually find a way to love each other.”
Just as assembling the fictional group was a challenge, so was bringing the movie to fruition.
“I’ve been a nerd my whole life, and wanted to see this movie made for my whole life,” said Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ president of production. “When [Iron Man] succeeded is when we realized [that] we actually have the opportunity to do it.”
When it finally came time to bring the Avengers to the screen, Feige selected a wild card in the eyes of the industry – but fan favorite – Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Cabin in the Woods) to direct. Whedon not only had his geek cred going for him, but according to Feige, was chosen for his unique ability to focus on character.
“Looking at Joss’s body of work and the scripts that he’s written and his TV shows, the characters never ever get lost,” said Feige. “In fact, those are the moments that shine. We [Marvel Studios] are confident in our ability to handle a production of this size; we wanted a helmsman to come in and steer it in unexpected ways, and to guide that tone, which is what Joss has done so well.”
It is a testament to Whedon’s ingenuity to be able to maintain a fantastic balance between character and action. There is not one dull moment in The Avengers: Each hero shares a common arc in a sense, but have different journeys in which they come to see why they’re perfectly fitted to work together.
Hemsworth said it best when he described the Avengers as being fish out of water. “We somehow belong in [the Avengers], amongst the fact that we don’t belong anywhere else.”
Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man is “more Han Solo than Luke Skywalker,” as the actor quipped, in the sense that he starts off not setting out to do something noble. Then there is Thor, who must face his brother, and Captain America, who is coming to terms with being a man out of time.
Audiences are no doubt eager to see Mark Ruffalo’s new interpretation of Bruce Banner/Hulk, who Whedon decidedly kept more human in this incarnation. Ruffalo’s take on Banner is a combination of the direction given to him by Whedon, as well as input from his 10-year-old son, interestingly enough.
“[Whedon] said he really liked the ‘Incredible Hulk’ TV show, so I rented it with my son,” said Ruffalo. “After the third episode, he turned to me and said, ‘Papa, he’s so misunderstood.’ I basically based my character entirely on my 10-year-old boy. [Hulk] has all of the force of nature screaming out of his body, while at the same time having everyone around him telling him to fucking control himself.”
Whedon used his expertise to find the appropriate way to present the characters for both fans of the comics, and those who were less familiar.
“You have to know how much people need to know, because
some people come in knowing everything and some people will come in knowing nothing, and you don’t want to tell them too much,” he said. “You want some things to be inferred. It’s fun to see a movie that has texture beyond what you know.”
While the richness of the characters was Whedon’s focus, he definitely also packed in the action – which he described as the “booze and candy” of the film – with fight sequences aplenty!
However, not all the characters got in the same amount of action, and Evans joked that he felt a little gypped as the most old school of the gang as the Cap, the mind behind the team.
“I’m like- Hulk, you do this impossible thing, Thor, you bottleneck a portal, and Iron Man, fly over here –and I’ll take the stairs.”
Not having super-human powers didn’t get Renner or Johansson down either, and in fact, both provide many of the film’s most memorable action scenes. Black Widow’s call to action scene during an interrogation is signature of kick-ass feminist Whedon!
The Avengers is an experience for the moviegoer that raises the bar as far as superhero movies go. It’s a great combination of story, action, comedy, relationships, cameos (Stan Lee’s isn’t the highlight in this one) and self-deprecation.
Whedon took a genre he loves, created a story and worked with the cast to make the characters aware of themselves in a relatable way.
“This is essentially a comic book movie, but you kind of buy into the reality of it,” explained Downey Jr.
Whedon has revived a long lost art in the film industry: the ability to guide the audience into a suspension of disbelief during a time when they have become disillusioned by the same old tricks churned out by Hollywood. He takes what they go in knowing, and turns it on its head – he’s a true director/illusionist, whose act will leave you wondering how he did it, while enjoying the magic in not quite knowing.
The Avengers releases May 4.

ThE NAmE Is INEsCAPABLE, and the music is everywhere. An ever-prominent figure in the rock world and the cornerstone musician of the reggae genre, Bob Marley maintains a posthumous fan base of over 30 million (according to Facebook) and continues to boast record sales of over 250,000 albums per year. His message was simple and his music is transcendent. Considering the widespread and long-lasting impact of his music, it is surprising that a film like this had not come about sooner. Nearly 32 years after his death, Marley hit theaters on April 20.
Produced in collaboration with Marley’s family members and colleagues, this film attempts to set the record straight about a musical icon that we all think we know. Marley has been created to be the definitive documentary on the life of a legend. Beginning with the his humble beginnings as a poor musician on the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, the film follows the Wailers’ rise to popularity, their political influence and the untimely death of reggae music’s first superstar. Complete with interview footage from family, friends and early collaborators, Marley gives a candid perspective on the well known, and often misunderstood, musician.
In an interview with Campus Circle, Marley’s eldest son Ziggy commented on his involvement in producing this film.
“I was at the point where I was tired of seeing other people’s versions of my father,” he said. “As Bob’s eldest son, I wanted to be personally involved in something that would talk about his life. I want to represent my father differently than all these
people that have written books and [made] films [about him].”Ziggy explained that once he was involved in the project,
it was a lot easier for members of his family to open up and contribute to the film. He said that his brothers and sisters would not have been willing to share stories of their father if the project had not been an organic attempt by the family to tell this story.
“We wanted to make a definitive piece that would be the pinnacle of everything else that has been done on Bob,” he said. “This is it, the thing that portrays Bob in the fullest perspective of his life.”
The perspective that Ziggy is referring to is an honest one, that comes from the opinions of those that were actually there during the days of Bob Marley’s storied career. Rather than enlisting the help of historians and other professionals, the film is made using memories and images gathered by family and friends. The resulting project is a film teeming with affection and honesty.
Surprisingly, as much as this film looks to applaud the accomplishments of Bob Marley, certain sections take on a much more realistic tone, commenting on the more problematic facets of the icon’s character. Issues of adultery, abandonment and cannabis consumption are addressed both gracefully and tactfully. Rather than demonize or glorify the memory of a man we may have our assumptions about, Marley gives a humanistic perspective on why Bob Marley lived the way he did. It does not seek to categorize any of his actions as right or wrong, but rather to address the factual accounts of stories that many fans would rather not think about.
As a documentary, Marley is a compelling glimpse into
musical history. As an accurate tribute to the man himself, Marley is a comprehensive summary of the life, the inspiration, and the vision of Bob Marley.
With a musical backdrop of roots reggae and a storyline that jumps off the screen, this film stands by itself as a fitting depiction of its subject.

MARLEy Is ThE DEfINITIVE DoCUmENTArY of A mUsIC LEgENDProduced by Bob Marley’s family and friends, the film gives a candid look into the life of an icon. BY PATRICK MEISSNER
Bob Marley remains the cornerstone musician of the reggae genre.
PUshErJoNEs: “CoUNT mE oUT”Move over Gorillaz; here comes PusherJones, a virtual band whose members include Dave Kushner of Velvet Revolver, Franky Perez of Scars on Broadway, Joey Castillo of Queens of the Stone Age, Scott Shriner of Weezer and rhythm guitar player Dave Warren, who also happens to be the creative director of the animated TV series “The Simpsons.” The idea for the band came from Kushner and Warren, who initially likened the imaginary band to a mash-up of the Gorillaz and Guns N’ Roses. But now things have gone much further; coming soon will be the PusherJones animated TV series and a music video, and probably Gorillaz-style concert appearances. For now, the PusherJones debut “Count Me Out” drops on May 1 as a stand-alone single and as a cut on Avengers Assemble, the soundtrack to The Avengers.
CArINA roUND: TIGERMENDINGFans of British singer Carina Round have been waiting five long years for the eclectic artist to put out new music; now the wait is ending with the May 1 release of the oddly-named Tigermending. Currently living in Los Angeles, Round says she’s found lots of inspiration on the local scene. “Making my home in the creative circus of Los Angeles has allowed me the profound opportunity to develop a loving and supportive community of brilliant musicians, artists, photographers, videographers and other
collaborators. I’ve been fortunate to work with and learn from some of my favorite artists old and new, which has opened me up to new roads of expression.” Guesting on Tigermending are Brian Eno, Billy Corgan and Dave Stewart.
ThE PArLoToNEs: JOURNEy THROUGH THE SHADOWSFans of the Parlotones will be happy to know that the South African band has a new release called Journey Through the Shadows dropping on May 8. The Parlotones enjoy being the biggest rock band in South Africa, and they get more popular Stateside with each new release and tour. But lead singer Kahn Morbee explains that the band knows they have lots of work to do before they can say they’ve conquered the States. “America dictates trends around the world,” says Morbee. “If you’re big there the rest of the world listens. It has a ripple effect. We would be very proud to achieve success in the U.S. because very few artists from our country have managed it. It would be nice to have a success story, especially in a nation that needs uplifting, and instill folks back home with a ‘can do’ belief.” The Parlotones play the Roxy on May 17.

AfTEr A fIVE-YEAr hIATUs, Mickey Avalon is back and Loaded! The new album, released by Suburban Noize, is the same dirty, sleazy, outrageous “strip-hop” everyone knows, loves and expects from Avalon; he throws it down!
Using his life experiences as fuel for his intense rhymes, Avalon is now inviting listeners to step into his world of debauchery with the release of his sophomore studio album, which drops on April 24. Living, learning and making it happen describes the new phase of the artist, who once lived on the streets and dabbled in drugs, alcohol and prostitution.
The new album reflects the singer’s nonchalant attitude towards life, while bringing to light the new episode of the Avalon saga. Since his first self-titled album, Avalon has evolved and faced many adversities. He sounds like a Hunter S. Thomson novel meshed with the swagger and quick wit of Kanye West mixed with the gimmicky beats of Kevin Federline (who can forget “Popozao?”). You either love it or you hate it.
Avalon’s new work takes fans on a journey through the seedy streets of Hollywood. He immediately launches into his salacious exploits with “Rock Bottom,” an anthem for his rebellious self-destructing behavior, and continues the depravity alongside Unwritten Law’s Scott Russo on the album’s lead single “Girlfriend,” an ode to having friends with benefits.
Avalon’s diversity allows him to slip into sleek electro-synth beats (“I’m Hot”), playfully intricate rhymes over a classic hip-hop beat (“More Junk”), and rock out while letting it all hang out (“Tight Blue Jeans”).
Perhaps one of the most telling tracks on the album, “CA Crack Cocaine” says it all: “I’m living the American dream/I got the shit that’ll make you scream.” This track, featuring rapper Cisco Adler, takes you back to Beastie Boys in their early days when the east coast white boys were partying as much as they were rapping.
It’s hard for most artists to describe their own sound; however Avalon always finds a way to come up with something distinctive, simple, and more often than not, lewd. His genre is filled with sexual energy and comedy, and invites you to embrace decadence and celebrate its hedonistic glory.
“Someone called it ‘strip-hop’ once and I liked that term,” says the artist.
No longer a prostitute or a drug addict, an older, more mature
Avalon acknowledges that there are certain limits that don’t need to be met. Without his addiction, his focus is music and staying alive in order to be a father to his daughter.
“How far is too far? No one can really speak of the edge,
because those who go all the way to the edge die. So, all you can get is recollections of what is right before the edge,” says the rapper, who has an Iggy Pop aesthetic.
Wild, entertaining and completely over-the-top, Avalon is
one-of-a-kind. In a sense, he is the true Mad Hatter. According to the rapper, “You have to wear different hats for different situations,” and Avalon wears a different hat for every stitch he sews.
What that means is that the Mickey Avalon on-stage is different from the Mickey Avalon off-stage. His performances may have once been his way of life, but that has changed along with his life perspective.
“The way you act in the bedroom is going to be different than how you act in the boardroom, so it would be absurd for anyone to act in real life the way they act when they are performing,” he says. “I’m the same person, but in real life I prefer to be calmer than when I’m on stage, where I have to be a full force. It’s kind of like publicly having sex with myself and a lot of people watching.”
In spite of a life tainted with tragedy, Avalon has fortunately turned his life around and taken an old genre to a new level. He continues to find ways to make light of himself and those that surround him, including his longtime girlfriend. When asked what she thinks of his career he simply replied: “Yes, I have a girlfriend, I keep her in a cage and feed her well. She doesn’t speak English, so I really don’t know what she thinks about all of this. She has a mean high kick and isn’t afraid to use it when I let her out.”
Onstage, expect the artist to be his usual ostentatious self. The lights, the hip-grinding swagger, the dirty lyrics and an overdose of sex appeal is exactly what you’ll get. He is a master in his craft who has been to hell and back, and is ready to reap the hard-earned fruits of his labor. He’s lucky to be alive, and he’s conscious of what his life has to offer. In a way, Avalon is growing up.
“Not to sound corny, but the whole ride has been memorable. I get to travel the world and get paid to party. I get to meet and hang out with people that I look up to, like artists, models, pro-surfers and other musicians,” says the rapper.
In conclusion, where there’s darkness there’s light. He wanted to live fast and die young; he wanted to, as he put it, “leave a good-looking corpse,” but that didn’t happen. He survived.
“Since I already passed the dying young part, I am looking for a new philosophy. You got any? If you got the money honey, I got the time.”

LIVINg IN wEsTwooD, DECENT mExICAN fooD Is TErrIBLY hArD To ComE BY. It may be blasphemous to say, but I am incredibly envious of the plethora of delicious taquerias surrounding USC’s campus. While we boast many great sushi spots, a myriad of top-notch pizza places, and of course, In-N-Out, UCLA’s campus is nearly void of Mexican restaurants. What’s a girl gotta do to get a taco around here?
Alas, one day I discovered a hidden gem: La Choza. Tucked in between a dry cleaner and a Thai place on Westwood Boulevard, one can easily miss La Choza’s unassuming green and yellow sign. Most people I talk to have never heard of it, but
when I come across a fellow deprived taco aficionado, the name La Choza brings a special glimmer to their eye.
La Choza serves fresh, authentic, homemade Mexican food as it should be done. No frills, no pretense –just really awesome, simple food. While it is worth the trip south of Wilshire to eat in and enjoy hot chips and a lovely selection of salsas, they offer free delivery to those stranded on campus.
Their menu is sure to have something for everyone, but my go-to is the tacos. La Choza makes perfect, authentic street tacos—two small corn tortillas filled with your choice of meat, topped with a smattering of chopped onions and cilantro,
and nothing more. That is how a taco should be. No unsightly additions like American cheese or globs of sour cream will be found on these treasures, and at less than two dollars a taco, you can satisfy your craving on a college budget.
La Choza is my favorite Westwood secret, and I originally wanted to keep it all to myself, but as someone who understands that some of us have needs that only Mexican food can fulfill, I thought I would share.

ThE NEwEsT CrEATIoN from ChEf ADAm fLEIsChmAN, founder of the Umami Restaurant Group, has hit Westwood in the form of gourmet fast-food pizza place, 800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria. The restaurant opened its doors in Westwood Village on January 2, 2012, and has been welcoming steady business ever since.
Restaurant-goers are presented with a pizza assembly line (imagine Chipotle but with pizza toppings), where each pizza is custom-created to the customer’s desire. The raw pizza is then put into an 800-degree oven, and 60 seconds later is ready for consumption. The pizza, advertised as “Neapolitan,” is doughier than typical pizza and is eaten with a knife and fork. Customers can request a crispy pizza option if desired.
Other menu items include specialty pizzas, salads, L.A. Creamery Gelato, beer, wine and soft drinks, all moderately priced. The prices are cheap if you order one of “The Classics,” which range from $5.15 for a pizza containing only marinara sauce, to
$6.45 for a “Pizza Margherita,” but there is a $1 charge per each additional topping, which adds up quickly. For a classic pizza with three additional toppings and a soft drink, customers are looking at around a $12 meal. So is it worth it?
My experience at 800 Degrees was extremely enjoyable. The atmosphere of the venue, a room with high arching ceilings, vintage pizza box decorations and tables draped with white tablecloths, mixed the fast-food atmosphere with a pleasant dining experience. I ordered a Pizza Margherita with mushrooms, which was ready in about 3-4 minutes and served on a large plate. The crust was thin and doughier than average, and definitely needed to be eaten with a fork, but was in no way undercooked. The pizza was quite good and had a unique taste. Size-wise, one pizza is a little much for one person, yet not quite enough for two, so be prepared to take home leftovers.
800 Degrees also has a state-of-the-art Coca Cola machine,
which may be even cooler than the make-your-own pizza. The machine, Coca Cola Freestyle, has a touch screen which offers over 100 flavor options that customers can mix and match to create the perfect soft drink. We’re talking Peach Sprite, Coke Zero with Orange, Raspberry Coke… the options are endless.
Overall, I would say 800 Degrees is worth a visit. The pizza is good, the prices are low, the experience is unique, and the Coke machine is awesome.
The Umami Restaurant Group will also be bringing a fast-food version of Umami Burger to Westwood in Summer 2012, set to be called U-Mini. U-Mini will take the place of Spudnick’s on 1131 Westwood Blvd.

BrUNETTE BEAUTY CANDACE BAILEY knew she wanted to be on television from the time she was 5 years old, and after a series of jobs in the entertainment industry, she landed her current gig hosting G4’s “Attack of the Show.”
“It’s all good, there’s no bad part of working on this show,” gushed Bailey. “I love the amazing people that I get to work with, first and foremost, but the live aspect is awesome. I love never knowing what’s going to happen!”
One would think doing a live show every day would be nerve-wracking, but Bailey has a surprisingly low-key pre-show ritual.
“I have an iced tea,” she explained. “I try to caffeinate myself to make sure I have plenty of energy, but I don’t really do anything to calm my nerves. The feel of the show is so relaxed and laid-back. Even if we mess up, it’s kind of not a big deal, so it’s a very easygoing atmosphere.”
Bailey got her start in the biz when a modeling convention came to her town in northern Florida when she was 12 years old. She was signed by a New York-based agency, and spent summers in New York doing print and commercial modeling.
“That’s how I got into the business,” said Bailey. “Commercials and television were all kind of one world, so it just transitioned from there.”
After high school, Bailey moved to New York full-time, attending Marymount Manhattan College as a Communications major, and soon landed a job as co-host of Nickelodeon’s “U-Pick Live.”
When she graduated, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting, but made her way back to hosting when she got an audition at G4, eventually getting involved with “Attack of the Show.”
“The Nickelodeon show was very similar to ‘Attack,’ except obviously it was for a much younger audience, but we had guests on that we would interview, we had musical performers, and we did silly things like we do on ‘Attack of the Show,’” she explained.
After auditioning for G4, Bailey started out doing video packages and guest hosting for “Attack,” and when Olivia Munn left her hostess position, Bailey was selected to take over the spot.
“They were testing girls for the gig, and we each did a live show for a week, and I ended up getting it.”
While Bailey always dreamed of being on TV, she also grew up with a passion for gymnastics, competing on a national level.
“Gymnastics was my life,” she explained. “I went six days a week, four hours a day. Then when I started the acting thing, I was like, ‘Oh, I like this better!’”
But she admits that sometimes her inner-gymnast still comes out when she’s hosting.
“Even now, it’s something that I can just pull out of my back
pocket if I want to,” she said. “I’ve done flips on the show, and I’ll bust out the worm every now and then!”
While her main focus is on her hosting duties, the stunning 29-year-old has a few other projects in the works. She’s currently set to appear as herself in an upcoming video game, will be writing a gadgets column for Men’s Fitness magazine, and is doing some red carpet correspondence for E!, G4’s sister network, which she hopes to do more of in the future.
However, for now, Bailey is enjoying every moment of being a part of “Attack of the Show.”
“I just love the things that we get to do, like this weekend I’m going to Hawaii for work; that’s a hard life,” she joked. “Of course we have to go to a couple of junkets and do some packages and it’s work, but it’s in Hawaii, so I love that.”
While Bailey is looking forward to taking a short break to go back to Florida to visit her mother and grandparents this summer, she’s also excited for one of the season’s biggest pop culture events: Comic-Con.
“We do a four-hour live show from the convention floor, and that whole weekend is just insanely awesome. We have a panel, and just the whole process is amazing.”
When she’s not working, you can probably find Bailey at one of her favorite local bowling alleys.
“I love going bowling,” she confessed. “I don’t do it as often as I would like to, because that’s a little dorky!”
The self-proclaimed homebody also loves getting together
with friends for dinner and wine, or heading out to see a movie.“I’m a big fan of going there, ordering my popcorn, getting my
Milk Duds and just stuffing my face and enjoying my two hours of movie time.”
As for future plans, the rising star shows no sign of stopping her ascent.
“Ultimately, I would love to have a career where I can do both acting and hosting,” said Bailey, who has previously appeared in television dramas including “Jericho” and “The Sopranos.” “I really love them both, and I would love to be able to go back and forth.”
Having done primarily dramatic acting, Bailey hopes to try out some more comedic roles in the future.
“I think it would be a lot of fun! I’m loving the show ‘Up All Night,’ and I would love to be on something like that,” said the multi-talented Alabama native.
In fact, she loves television so much, she is hoping to create a series of her own one day.
“I actually have a story that I want to write for a TV show, and I would love to have the time to be able to do that.”
It’s clear that when it comes to ambition and talent, Bailey has plenty of both. That, coupled with her cheery and down-to-earth demeanor, is sure to lead to continued success throughout her career.

rEmEmBEr whEN ThErE wAs ALL ThAT TALk about some guy named Pujols and that team down in Anaheim that supposedly was going to redefine Major League Baseball in Southern California? Yeah, neither do I. Funny game, baseball. In just a few short weeks the conversation has taken a startling turn.
The many volumes of spring training speculation is but a faint memory as the new season has given L.A. baseball fans plenty of surprises. Who would have guessed, for example, that the Dodgers would spring to their best start since 1955, the year they won their first World Championship? That they would in fact be competing for the best record in the league with the Washington Nationals, a team that has never once finished above .500 at season’s end? Who could have guessed that three weeks into the season, the great Albert Pujols would be without a single homerun and the Angels of Orange County would be struggling to get out of last place?
Here’s another surprise: that offseason acquisition pitcher Aaron Harang in just his second start of the season would set the all-time Dodger record by striking out nine consecutive batters. Not Koufax, not Drysdale, not Sutton, Valenzuela or Hershiser.
Harang. A couple of days later, the Dodgers would turn their first triple play in 14 years. And talking about records, Matt Kemp, the da Vinci of this Dodger renaissance, would become the fastest ever to hit nine homeruns in just the first 15 games. At this rate, he’ll breach 100 homers for the year. Not bad for a guy who hit just .270 in spring training.
Oh, but that was so long ago. And the baseball season is oh-so-long. For all the fun Dodger fans may be having, the sober-minded person knows it is early. They may also take into account that the Dodgers have achieved these mighty feats against teams like the Padres, Pirates and Astros, all of whom finished at least 20 games under .500 last season.
Still, it is fun to imagine that the announcement of the team’s sale to an ownership including Laker great and real estate developer Magic Johnson brought an instant bit of magic with it. In no time there will be new Kirk Gibson homers and Fernandomanias. Everything fans knew and loved will come back as though it never went away.
Ah, but the world has changed. This is not your father’s family-owned ballclub nuzzled neatly into the Chavez Ravine.
This is the $2.15 billion Guggenheim Baseball Management (GBM) club, and the Ravine is a parking lot jointly owned by Frank McCourt and GBM. All the delight which on-the-field play has provided in recent weeks, even the relief at knowing McCourt will soon no longer have his name attached to the stadium, does not hide the stench of big business emanating from “Dodgertown.” How on Earth does GBM intend on making a profit off the ball club? There are only two reasonable answers: television and development.
On April 14, all fans in attendance were given a palm-sized replica of Dodger Stadium in honor of the park’s 50th anniversary, fun to hold in one’s hand and to think fondly of the many good times you may have enjoyed at what has become a landmark. You might pretend for a moment that the stadium is your own as you gaze over the panoramic vistas, from the skyscrapers of Downtown to the Hollywood Hills to the Pacific Ocean. Now imagine you’re a filthy rich investor whose just bought 300 acres of prime L.A. real estate for $2.15 billion. What do you do?

frEshLY LAUNChED COLLEGEROOTS.COM is your one-stop shop for discovering college musicians and artists. Founder Ritesh Gupta had a vision for an online college music scene, where artists could gain exposure and users could discover new music and “root” their favorites to the top.
At CollegeRoots, you can see what artists are trending or “Most Rooted,” check out awesome new music by genre or by university, or you can listen to playlists with a vibe like “Chill” or “Upbeat.” Users can also take advantage of the awesome “My Scene” feature, where they can easily listen to their favorite CollegeRoots tracks.
Since the launch of CollegeRoots on Valentine’s Day, Gupta has been receiving a hugely positive response to the Web site.
Campus Circle got the chance to sit down and talk with him, so read on for the scoop on CollegeRoots.
Campus Circle: What was your inspiration for CollegeRoots?Ritesh Gupta: One day, I was with one of my best friends in my frat and we just sat in the dining hall and talked about localizing music and putting it into categories by school. It was only for the UC’s at first, and we found that there were some pretty rad artists from these schools. This was last spring, and this summer I traveled to Georgia to visit my cousin and asked him about the college music scene—whether there were any concerts around his school [the University of Georgia] and if there were any artists that students gravitated towards, and he really didn’t know of any. We got talking about an idea for a Web site and thought this could be a pretty cool thing. Also, my inspiration came from me coming to grips with the fact that I’m not the best musician. I love playing the drums and making music, but I really didn’t want to make a career out of it, so I leapt into the music world in another way.
CC: Has your vision for CollegeRoots changed since your initial idea?RG: It was unfathomable what it would become visually, and we’re still constantly evolving the design and figuring out ways to improve it. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. Running the content is a little overwhelming, but it has
been surprisingly easy to pump out new artists. I have a lot of support from alumni artists like Lady Danville and even some top artists. Giving these up-and-coming people a voice has been sick. I didn’t think of it that way last September. I just thought of it as a unique opportunity to legitimize college music.
CC: How has the feedback been from your family and friends?RG: Getting feedback from family and friends is the coolest thing. A lot of ideas come from a text or a Facebook message from a friend, even friends that I haven’t talked to in a long time. The most common word that people describe CollegeRoots with is “sick,” which I really like. Also, having my best friends and roommates tell me what’s stupid, what’s cool, and what should be put on the backburner has
been amazing.
CC: How has it been juggling CollegeRoots, school, and the rest of your life?RG: Now that we’re transitioning from development into the maintenance aspect it’s become easier on me, and I know how to get things done efficiently. Before, everything else was on the backburner. I’d skip meals and miss class. My internship was always number one, but CollegeRoots definitely came second above everything else. I actually have more on my plate now, looking for a career, but I still have a social life and am able to take classes and eat, and I’m much less stressed out because time management hasn’t been an issue anymore, and it’s only going to get easier.
CC: What are some things that you have planned for CollegeRoots?RG: One thing we’ll launch soon is being able to get personalized updates based on who you “root.” Having the recommendation component will be really exciting, and what’s great is that it’s not going to complicate the Web site; it will actually make rooting simpler. Rooting helps the artists and will help you. That will come out in the next two to three weeks. We are also working on a new pop-out player so you can listen while browsing the site. It probably won’t be perfected until the middle of June, but for now we’ll release a Beta version with limited functions. People might wonder why we are releasing a feature that isn’t finished. I figure I could release something in a few months that’s perfected, but I would rather release something now so users know we’re listening to them. That’s really important to me. We’re also going to start reaching out to big artists that people don’t know have had their roots in college. The goal is to have users and other artists realize that there are other artists that are huge that had their starts just like us. How rad would it be to listen to an early demo of a well-known artist? I think a lot of users will dig that.

Channel 101 is Harmon and Schrab’s illegitimate love child, born in a living room from a gathering of friends displaying their own multi-media renditions of Jaws 4. This and similar homespun film projects attracted larger and larger audiences, and people were eager to submit their work to a then nameless festival.
It came to be called the Super Midnight Movie Show, which eventually died, but from its ashes arose the slightly more refined Channel 101: a monthly film festival where anyone can submit a five-minute pilot, and the audience chooses whether it ends then and there, or gets the opportunity to grow into a full episode.
According to Channel 101, the festival “is a chance to sit in the worn-out chair of the fat network exec, drunk on the blood of lowly artists whose right to exist is given in exchange for their ability to nourish.”
Every month, audience members choose to green-light some pilots while scrapping others, and at the following month’s festival, the winners become full episodes, new pilots are viewed, and the cycle continues. A show’s existence is solely at the mercy of the audience, and shows will only run for as long as viewers are entertained, guaranteeing a constant supply of fresh, made-to-order programming.
