What does it mean for our customers?

• OurcertificatemakesthingsaloteasierforclientsinachievingwhattheyseektoachievefromusingCortemenclosuresbywideningthescopesignificantly.

• AlloftheuncertaintyhasnowbeenremovedbyBarrier-ExinrespectofISbarriers. ALLISBarriersarenowcoveredundertheBarrier-ExCertificate.

• Largepowertransformersarenowpermittedupto50kVAundertheBarrier-Excertificate,insteadof17kVA.

• CustomerscanbeassuredthatBarrier-ExhavethehigheststandardsoftechnicalexcellencehavingnotonlyacquiredtheirowncertificatebuthavingmorescopeunderthisnewcertificatethananyothersupplierofCortemequipmentintheUK.

• OnlyBarrier-ExarepermittedtousethiscertificateintheUK–noothersupplierofCortemproductispermittedtouseourcertificateintheUK.

• SeveralotherrestrictionshavebeenremovedandtheseareidentifiedwithintheenclosedCapabilityMatrix.

Why has Barrier-Ex developed this new certificate?

• Wehaverespondedtocustomer’sdemandstoincreasethescopeofapplicationsnormallypermittedundertheCortemcertificate.

• Manycustomersaredemandingthatsupplierspossesstheirowncertificatetodemonstratetechnicalexcellenceratherthanoperatingunderalicence.

• ToofferourcustomerssomethingdifferentandagenuineUSPsocustomerscanthemselvesaddvaluetotheirownbusiness

• TorecognisethemarkettrendofapushtowardsIECEx

• ItisaresponsetonumerousconcernsandproblemsencounteredbycustomersspecificallyinrelationtolimitationsontheuseofISBarriers(Only12BarriersareavailableforATEXandforIECEx,manyofwhichareobsolete,underotherCortemprovidersintheUK.)andtolimitationsontheuseoflargepowertransformers(othercompaniesarerestrictedto17kVAonly,andonlytobeinstalledwithinthelargestCortemenclosure). Someoftheseproblemshaveleadtonon-conformances,recallofproductsandcostlyre-certificationprocesses. Inthosecasesinsuranceisdeemedinvalid.

IECEx Barrier Ex are the only supplier of Cortem equipment in the UK who manufacture under their own certificate for IECEx and ATEX and not under licence.

Possess own certificatesPossession of your own certificate whilst not a pre requisite in handling Cortem product demonstrates Technical

Excellence and understanding of the product and its limitations and capabilities. Check with your Cortem supplier to see what their capability is and which certification they own

Equipment voltage approved up to 1600V No more unnecessary limitations to your Low Voltage equipment, other than the clearances specified in our new certificate. The lower clearance table also applies to component spacings which were not previously allowed in the Cortem certificate.

Amperage and frequency Allowances The Cortem certificate limited Amperage to 630 Amps, and AC frequency to 50/60 Hertz. There are now no limits other than the component specified parameters.

All IS Barriers that your functionality requires

The Cortem ATEX certificate is limited to 12 IS Barriers only at time of writing. Any IS Barrier chosen outside of those 12 will result in the product being non conforming to standards. This is now further restricted by 8 of the listed 12 barriers becoming obsolete. The IECEx certificate is further restricted again, to a list of only 8 with the same issues on barriers being obsolete.

Please note our exclusivity in the UK in being the only supplier who can service ALL your IS Barrier requirements - our competitors are heavily limited to a small finite lists!

Battery Charging and Photovoltaic Circuits The Cortem certificate does not permit the use of battery chargers. Barrier Ex has exclusivity in the UK with regards to use of battery chargers in Cortem enclosures. This inclusion also permits the safe management of photovoltaic circuits.

0 -17 kVA single or 3 phase transformer The Cortem Certificate permits a 0-17kVA single or 3 phase transformer. Barrier Ex has removed these restrictions for its clients by removing these restrictions and our new certificate allows us to accommodate up to 50kVA.

17 - 25 kVA single or 3 phase transformer Barrier Ex has responded to its clients by removing these restrictions and our new certificate allows us to install up to 50kVA single or 3-phase transformers.

25- 35 kVA single or 3 phase transformer N/A

35 - 40 kVA single or 3 phase transformer N/A

40 -50 kVA single or 3 phase transformer N/A

Optical radiation / Class 1 laser equipment N/A

Containment systems Gaseous and liquid containment systems to Annexe G.

Heatsinks and small cooling fans Barrier-Ex has included the allowance of small fans with a restricted maximum flow.

HMI touch screen applications If your application will function through the Cortem glass window, we will approve its inclusion in the enclosure.
