Movie Analysis:

Intoy Syokoy ng Kalye Marino

Naalala mo noong araw na muntik na kong malunod? Sinagip mo ako Hindi ako basnig... pero

pwede mo akong gawing timbulan, lunday at bangka bangka. -Intoy

I dont remember the lines exactlybecause its too deep, but it was in the last scene. As I remember and

read through this, I cant help but feel amazed on how Intoy loves Doray (his innocent turned prostitute

friend). An honest love that gives no exchange not even lust and money. Love, family, friendship and life,

the cycle on which the story goes, through hardships we can always have them and God will always be

there if we just listen and stop questioning about it.

SUMMARY:

Intoy is a young tahong (mussel) diver. He takes care and sells them for a living in a place called Kalye

Marino. A place of unfortunate happenings because of poverty, he has a family, his father which is also a

tahong diver and his mother an old time prostitute took by his father. Intoy has a cycle of friends, Yeye

Tikol a marine engineering student who wishes to go overseas to replace his father, Bertong Baka who

works as a bus boy at night, Boyet who does nothing and drowned to his vices like them, and Doray an

innocent youth who matures early because she was left by her mother with her two siblings, she was

Intoys love affair.

It was Yeyes birthday they had a little celebration it was on that day Intoy almost got drowned but he

was saved by Doray because the rest of the gang thought it was a joke, how could a diver be drowned

they said. It is also on that day that Intoys father found out that his wife is cheating on her and so he

drunk and fell to the water and then he died. Intoy was very depressed and then later on, her mother

decided to live him to go with another guy without even saying goodbye. Depression lead Intoy to

suicide he tried to drown himself but he did not succeed. The gang came told him go ahead drown

yourself, youre so stupid. It was their way to handle difficult situation, to laugh and to drink.

The hardship goes on, not only for Intoy but for the rest of the gang. Berto was working one night and

he was asked by his lazy Uncle for money, he said later but his Uncle was very persisting he even told

him not to go home, he walked out but his Uncle pushed him and so he hurt him and then decided to

leave and live with Intoy. Boyet got jailed because he snatched a phone from a young girl and still joke

around despite the serious situation. Yeye who always study hard found out that his father was taken by

the Somalian pirates asking for a ransom and later beheaded his father. He was so lost; he leans on with

vices and drugs throwing his dreams. Doray who was always took care by Intoy turned into a prostitute,

she cant find a way out, and for her it was the only way to have a job and to feed and send her siblings

to school. It was really hard for her she came into a point she sells her body for a trade of fish, the pain

killed her, she got used to it and turned into an expert. Through the hardships, Intoy was always there

for her, giving her a daily supply of tahong and he even bought all the fish for Doray without telling her

the right reason. Because he knows, its the least he can do but his love did not change. Above them all,

Intoy stood up. He was always there for them, for Yeye, Berto, Boyet and Doray. He used what he has to

help himself. He worked hard to fulfill his promise to Doray that he would get her out in Kalye Marino;

they will start a new life.

It was Yeyes birthday again; it was a new day for them. The gang was complete, Yeye said that he would

go to the province to forget things and Boyet was turned into a Pastor who always teach the word of

God. Hence, the hardship goes on, Berto got ill he was infected by a prostitute, he got mad and hurt the

girl but she revenged him. Berto wanted to fight back but the gang told him to stop it was enough.

Doray got ill also, on the day she promised Intoy that she would go with her he went to Boyet and she

asked, Pinaparusahan niya ba ako? Bakit? Boyet said, Masyado niya tayong mahal kaya bakit ka niya

paparusahan? May tamang dahilan kung bakit ito nangyayari dahil mahal ka niya. Paano ang

mga kapatid ko? she said, Marami pa naman taong may malasakit Boyet said. She cried and

embraced him. It was also on that day, a white tide came, and it killed the mussels that were supposed

to be harvested. Intoy got depressed, it was supposed to be the day but what can he do, he has no

money. Intoy knew that Doray was with Boyet for the wrong reason, with the words of Berto, Intoy

bursted he pushed Berto and go to Boyet and punched him. Intoy also met her mother, her mother said

goodbye but Intoy didnt let her to explain.

That night, Dorays sibling went to Intoy and asked Intoy to come. Intoy came, he told Doray why she

came back she was just like her mother, why choose Boyet instead of him. Doray explained everything,

she shown Intoy the disease was spreading in her body, she said it was contagious; she didnt want to

infect Intoy on not controlling herself. Despite of it, Intoy told her how much he loves her, he said that if

she goes, he goes, if she stays, he stays. He showed the love without any doubt and then they made

love.

MOVIE ANALYSIS:

As Homer said, life is a glorious adventure and to live nobly was to accept it. Life has so much to bring,

it is on our own hands to do what is right, there no such things as mischief because if you believe it will

always go wrong. Its yourself who can help you and by the power of determination and faith to the

Lord.

It was my own reflection to the movie. For me its about life on how you handle, theres friendship, love

and family. With family, Intoy love his family so much, for him its very important. When his mother

came back, he is willing to accept her and forget about the past but her mother refused to. With

friendship, Intoy was always there, for the gang the good way is to laugh about it, it happened a lot in

the story, like when Intoy committed suicide and when Boyet went to jail. With love, the honest and

transparent love of Intoy for Doray, her love for her siblings he has a choice but the situation pushed

her.

Through pain and hardship, God has always a way to save them. Having them with each other saved

them. First with Yeye, he was so depressed about losing his father, he was so lost with drugs and when

he got hurt, Intoy came for him and it is when he realized it was time to stop. Berto got ill, he got mad

threw revenged and what he got? He got nothing, his friends told him to stop, and it is enough. Doray

got ill also, it was also Gods way, to save her, to get her out of there and to know that he was there.

Through it Boyet was used as an instrument, he was turned into a Pastor, to deliver the clear message of

God for all of them.

Hence as the story goes, as the different character portrays a role, you can see different natures of man

that can lead to good or bad. For example, when something bad happens they go for alcohol, they go

with sex which is mans nature. Also through difficulties they laugh, as if they dont have a big problem,

on the inside they bleed. Telling us that being depressed wont do anything so help yourself and no

matter how strong the person was, if hes love ones were involve, he would be shattered, it is hes

weakness. In here you can also see the pride of a man, the use of power to revenge and to fight back.

The lost of self control that may lead us to our own destruction.

The movie is good to reflect with because it really happens in our society today. The face of reality and if

youre going to relate it, yes money comes first, but for me, we always have a choice to choose what is

right, if we just listen and to keep determination and faith going and to know the little blessings and

appreciate it because He was there and always will be.
