Before you arrive in the UK

Applying for a UK student visa Most international students from outside the European Union

who wish to take a full-time course in the UK must apply for a

visa prior to leaving their home country.

You can check your status on the following website:

www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/doineedvisa/visadatvnationals

If you are a visa national you can apply for a Student

Visitor Visa for courses of six months or less; a General

Student Visa (Tier 4) for English language courses at or above

B2 on the CEFR; or a General Student Visa (Tier 4) for

courses at Level 3 on the National Qualifications framework

(NQF) at an institution which is deemed to be, or is on, the

Register of Highly Trusted Sponsors.

How will the Points Based System (PBS) affect my entry clearance/student visa application? If you are a visa national and you apply for a General Student

Visa you will need a ‘Confirmation of Acceptance for

Studies’(CAS), which is an electronic number, that

we will provide for you.

Applying for your General Student Visa (TIER 4) to come to the UKWhen you apply for a General Student Visa (Tier 4) you

must include a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

number.

• We will send your CAS details when you confirm your

unconditional offer of a place to study and pay your

deposit/full fees.

• Your CAS will not be sent more than six months before

the start of your course.

• The CAS number will be included in a letter called a ‘CAS

Statement’. This will also include important information

needed for your visa application.

• You can only apply for your visa three months or less

before the start of your course.

• The start date is published on your CAS Statement. If you

plan to arrive on a different date you must let us know.

This is very important as we must inform the UK Border

Agency (UKBA) if you do not arrive on time.

• When your visa is issued it will include your CAS number

as supplied on the CAS Statement.

• If you change your mind and want to study at another

institution, you have to tell us before you come to the

UK so we can cancel your CAS with UKBA, and

you can re-apply for your visa with a CAS from a

different sponsor.

Changes to your student registration statusWe must tell the UK Border Agency about any students who

have an entry clearance visa issued under PBS rules who fail

to arrive for the start of a course, withdraw from a course,

defer or suspend their studies, or fail to attend for significant

periods of time.

Further information about the points based system can

be found at the following websites. We advise that you check

these websites regularly for up to date information.

Meeting immigration staff at the airportWhen you arrive at a UK airport, you should be prepared to

answer some questions about yourself, including where you

will be staying and what you intend to do during your time

in the UK.

You may be asked to undergo a brief, routine health

check by the airport doctor, which might include an X-ray.

The health check will take place in a separate room.

Afterwards, you will need to return to Immigration Control.

Please note that if you have already studied in the UK and are changing your education provider, you will need to apply for a visa for your new course at INTO University of Exeter. This could take up to 40 days. It is a criminal offence to change educational providers before you have received your new visa from the Home Office. INTO University of Exeter will not be able to register you on the course unless you have a valid visa, and will ask you to leave.

INTO airport taxi transfer

INTO University of Exeter can arrange for a local taxi firm to meet students on arrival at the airport and take them directly to their accommodation. Payment for the transfer must be made seven working days in advance. The costs are as follows:

London Heathrow airport £205.00London Gatwick airport £225.00Bristol International airport £100.00Exeter International airport £20.00

If you want to share a taxi from Heathrow to reduce charges, you will still need to pay full fees seven days in advance however transfers will be refunded accordingly (i.e. two students per taxi - £104; 3 or 4 students per taxi - £85).

Please note that if you are delayed in meeting your taxi, either because your flight has been delayed, or because of delays at UK immigration or baggage collection, the taxi company will charge ‘waiting time’ and this charge will be passed on to you.

If you would like us to meet you at the airport, please complete the attached ‘Airport Transfer Booking Form’ on page 8 and return it to INTO. Payment can be made by completing the attached credit card form on page 9 and faxing it to INTO at +44 (0)1392 264277.

If you DO NOT WANT AN AIRPORT TRANSFER, you must still complete the ‘Arrival Details Form’ on page 10 and email to INTO at [email protected], or fax to +44 (0)1392 264277.

If you have booked an airport transfer, as you pass through immigration into the Arrivals Hall, you will see your taxi driver waiting for you holding an INTO sign with your name on it. If you cannot find your taxi driver on arrival, DO NOT LEAVE the Arrivals Hall. PLEASE DO the following:1. Go to the Information Desk and ask them to make

an announcement asking the taxi driver for YOUR NAME, going to INTO University of Exeter, to come to the Information Desk. Wait there until the taxi driver arrives.

2. Contact INTO on the Emergency Mobile Telephone Number 07972 136198.

YOU MUST INFORM US OF YOUR ARRIVAL DETAILS SO WE CAN MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR SOMEONE TO MEET YOU.

Please note that you are to arrive no earlier than the weekend before your course starts. If you do, you will need to make your own accommodation arrangements. If your flight is delayed, or you are delayed at the airport and will therefore arrive on a date after the weekend prior to your course start date, then you should call either the INTO office number during office hours or the INTO Emergency number at all other times to inform us.

Accommodation – when to arrive and where to go

Homestay accommodationIf you have requested homestay accommodation, you will be sent details of your accommodation by Sarah Pike, INTO’s Homestay Co-ordinator. As well as your host’s name and address, you will also receive a host profile, telling you more about your hosts and some information about what to expect when you are living in homestay accommodation. If you have requested and paid for the taxi transfer service, your taxi will take you directly to your host. When you get there, you will be given information about how to find the INTO Centre and directions on how to get to the University on the first day of your course. It is important that you contact your hosts to introduce yourself and also to let them know when you think you will arrive in Exeter, so that they can make sure they are home to greet you. When you arrive at your host’s home there will be instructions on what to do next. If you have any questions regarding homestay

accommodation you can email Sarah at [email protected] or telephone her on 01392 725352.

University accommodation If you are staying in INTO accommodation, you must arrive on either the Saturday or Sunday before your course starts. Details of where to go on arrival in Exeter will be provided with your accommodation confirmation. On arrival you will be given your room key, asked to sign your accommodation contract and shown to your room.

It is important that you complete the Arrival Details Form and return it to INTO, so that we can make sure that the key to your accommodation is waiting for you. If you are arriving earlier than the weekend before your course starts then you must make your own hotel arrangements until the Centre opens.

Private accommodationSourcing Private Accommodation: INTO is unable to assist you directly with the process of finding private accommodation as this will be a legal agreement between yourself and the landlord. We can however provide a guide to finding private accommodation, which includes contact details for local letting agents and relevant websites. If you require this please email [email protected]

Money

Currency

Currency across the UK is the pound sterling (£GBP). One pound is divided into one hundred pence (100p). Notes are issued to the value of £50, £20, £10, and £5 and coins to the value of £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p. Please note that £50 notes are very uncommon and should be avoided as they can often be the target of counterfeiters. We do not advise carrying large sums of cash with you on arrival.

We recommend that you bring enough money with you to cover the first couple of weeks after your arrival – no more than £250 in cash for your immediate needs should suffice. It is safer to bring large sums of money in travellers’ cheques, which can be cashed in banks, post offices and airports but be aware that there is often a minimum commission charge. Please avoid carrying large sums of cash or keeping large amounts in your room for safety reasons. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in the UK, MasterCard (Access) and Visa credit cards being the most common. Diners Club and American Express are less so. You can withdraw cash from a cashpoint machine (also known as an ‘ATM’) if you have a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for that card. You may want to inform your current bank that you are going to the UK and to ask if you can use your card here.

Bank accounts

If you are going to be here for longer than six months, we strongly recommended you open a UK bank account, as soon as possible, after arriving in the UK.

UK banks are open 9am to 4.30pm on weekdays and some are open on Saturday mornings. If you bring a banker’s draft in sterling with you (payable to yourself) or arrange for it to be sent, then you can open an account at a bank after you have registered on your course. It may also be useful to bring a letter from your bank at home (or some other documentation) to confirm your credit status. We will provide you with further information and support on opening accounts during your induction week. In order to open a bank account you will need the following:• Your passport• Proof you are a student – we will issue you with an

official bank letter after registration• Proof of address.

For further advice on opening bank accounts in the UK, you can visit: www.ukcisa.org.uk/student/bank_account.php

Living costs

It is estimated that a single student will need approximately £650 - £750 a month to meet their basic living expenses. This is just an indication and will alter depending on your lifestyle and spending habits. It is important to plan and budget your finances for living in the UK; it’s not just your course fees you need to think about. If you want help with planning and budgeting your finances, the following international student website may be useful: www.studentcalculator.org.uk/international/ index.asp

Induction programme

At the start of your course you will receive a full induction (providing you arrive the weekend before the start date of the course). This will vary in length according to which course you will be studying and it is a great opportunity to meet staff and students and find out more about the University and the local area. You should attend all sessions. The induction programme will usually include:• Welcome talks• Information sessions with INTO Student Services,

the Students’ Union, security staff• A test!• Social activities • A city orientation tour of Exeter• A campus tour.

The following is an example time table for the

September and January orientation programme.

‘When I first came to Exeter the INTO staff were a

great support to me. The events in the welcome week

such as trips to Sidmouth and Topsham, Bowling,

Cream Tea and visits to the city centre helped me a lot.

I also found many friends from different nations of the

world.’

For registration purposes at the INTO Centre you will be required to provide original academic transcripts and certificates, you must bring these documents with you.

We need a passport photograph of you to prepare your INTO Student Card. The INTO Student Card gives you access to the library, 24 hour access to the computer centre a range of student discounts (e.g. for travel). To supply your photograph by email please attach a passport style photograph in jpeg format and send to [email protected] (please cc in [email protected]). Make sure your name and INTO Reference Number are clearly written in the subject/title of the email. We can also accept photographs that have been sent by post. If you send them by post then you should send two passport photographs with your name written clearly on the back of each one. If we do not receive your photographs before you arrive, it will take at least five working days to prepare your UniCard. During this time you will not be able to access computers, the internet or your emails. The INTO Student Card acts as identification for you on campus and you should keep it with you at all times. It also acts as your library card and gives you 24 hour access to the University computer rooms.

Once your UniCard is ready you can collect it from Reception two or three days after registration. UniCards have the user’s name and photo, expiry date and a barcode with a number under it. The barcode/number is encoded on the reverse of the card and this magnetic strip is used for building access control. The UniCard is issued to all staff and students and serves as your library card. It will identify you as a member of the University and allows you appropriate access to services and facilities. You can also use this card to get student discounts in some shops. To use the University printers you need to put money on your student card. You can do this online at www.epay.exeter.ac.uk/printing. You must keep your card with you at all times.

Registering for computer access

Once you have your UniCard then you can register for computer access. You can do this in different ways:• You can use the computer in Reception (Old

Library).• You can register online https://srs.exeter.ac.uk/

resource/itreg/index.php. • You can visit I.T. services in the Main Library.

On arrival we will provide you with a FREE SIM card to use in the UK which also has one free international call on it, so you can call home and let your family know you have arrived safely. This will give you cheap rates to phone internationally and will be much cheaper than your current SIM card or any other UK network providers.

Alternatively, you can always download Skype, a free computer programme that allows you to use your computer like a phone and place international calls for free to other Skype users. Depending on your computer, web cameras are also supported.

Please remember that when you arrive in the UK you will have travelled a long way from home and although this will be an exciting time, please do remember that your family and friends may worry about you. REMEMBER to contact them and let them know that you are safe!

Other things to remember:• Attend ALL your classes and tutorials. • Always be on time!• Be prepared for your classes!• Care for others’ feelings and cultures.• Feel free to ask questions whenever you need to.• Join social events and sports clubs. There are lots

to choose from so ask the INTO staff.• Keep your accommodation clean and tidy.• Overcome problems by sharing them with your

friends, teachers and INTO staff.• Practise English as much as you can and in as

many places as you can.• Your academic progress and your behaviour will

always be monitored.

In addition to your academic study, INTO organises a regular programme of activities designed to help you make the most of your time in the UK. The social programme includes trips to nearby cities (for example Bath, Bristol or Cardiff); sights of interest like Stonehenge and the Eden Project; local events such as the South West Festival of Food and Drink or the theatre; and other activities to encourage students to socialise with each other and those at the University. Day trips are normally scheduled on a Saturday and can involve 50 to 250 students.

Details of all the social programme events will be available on the student notice boards in the Centre. Some events will be based on the University campus, others may require walking to the city centre which is about 15 minutes away.

Social events include:• Sports events• Day trips to nearby cities. These trips will vary in

price from £15-£25 depending on the place and also whether there are any admission charges

• Parties • Bowling.

Some of the activities are free but some may have a small charge. Places for the coach trips will be limited so you must sign up and pay as early as possible. The sign up sheets will be kept in reception.

‘I participated in many of the INTO social programme

activities. I especially liked the day trips away because I

got the chance to see many places that I probably

wouldn’t have seen if it hadn’t been organised for me. I

also got to try a traditional cream tea.’

Safety

The City of Exeter, despite being located amidst the largely rural environment of the South West, suffers many of the problems of the modern urban environment. Whilst the City is generally a safe place, it would be unfair to deny that incidents involving personal safety do occasionally happen.

The most effective way to minimise the risk of attack is by taking sensible precautions. Most people already do this as part of their everyday lives, often without realising it. Try to avoid walking alone at night. If you often walk home in the dark, get a personal attack alarm. These can be purchased at the INTO Centre on arrival.

Cash and credit cards/personal possessionsA thief only needs a moment to make off with your valuables. Cash is a favourite target for thieves, so try to avoid carrying large amounts. If your credit card is stolen, inform the card company immediately. If you delay reporting the loss, it could lead to a crime being committed in your name, as a thief could make fraudulent use of your card. Thieves can use credit cards for over the counter and telephone purchases. Never carry the personal identification number (PIN) with your cash dispensing cards. Sign new plastic cards as soon as they arrive and cut up old ones when they expire.

Healthcare

If you are on a course lasting six months or more you can get most health care free of charge from the National Health Service (NHS). This applies from the first day of your stay in the UK. If you are from a country with a reciprocal agreement with the UK, you will be covered for hospital treatment even if your course is less than six months, but generally only if the need for your treatment arose after you came to the UK. All EEA countries are covered. If drugs are prescribed by a general practitioner or family doctor, a prescription charge is made per item - currently £7.10. If you are not eligible for free health care we cannot guarantee that the University Health Centre or your doctor will provide this for you, but you will still be given free emergency treatment (but not free follow-up treatment or hospitalisation). Full details on how to register with a doctor (GP) will be available on arrival; there is a Student Health Centre on Campus.

Dentists: If you are eligible for NHS treatment you will be eligible for treatment from a dentist accepting NHS patients. Please note that dentists accepting new patients are extremely limited.

Opticians: Eye tests are available at opticians, which can be found on the High Street. You will have to pay a charge of around £25 for an eye test. You will need to pay for lenses and frames which cost from £35 upwards.
