Pipelines November 2016 Page 1 of 8 Volume 97 Issue 3 By Nathan Carterette SubDean ([email protected] ) Our November meeting will be on Monday the 28th at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, in Squirrel Hill. David Mahler, itinerant church musician, will share nuts and bolts, tricks, tales, secrets everyone knows, and songs that nourish healthy congregational music making. No musical prescriptions will be dispensed, but expect a dose of youcouldtrythis, and plenty of notions regarding the power of warbling together. Bring your voice! In addition to keeping his hands (and feet) in church music, Pittsburgher David Mahler composes and arranges for a variety of musical forces. He also leads an inclusive Tuesday night recreational singing group called the Beacon Street Red Sox, exploring songs from a variety of sources, including Charles Ives, Duke Ellington, Jean Ritchie, U.S. state songs, Disney songs, rounds, songs from the Seeger family, and lots more. With his wife, singer Julie Hanify, Mahler performs music from several folk and popular traditions. His work with children includes song leading and teaching music through playing the piano. One of Mahler’s favorite activities from forty years of eclectic music making was serving as ListenerInResidence in the harmonious community of LaMott, Pennsylvania. David Mahler’s recent compositions include “After the Traveler,” for string orchestra (University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra); “Takes On a Song,” for voice and nine clarinets, harp, mandolin, violin and bass (The Flexible Orchestra, New York); and “Silent Chorus,” a video work for live and prerecorded voice (Real Time Opera). Mahler’s scores and writings reside in the catalog of Frog Peak Music. Recordings of his compositions exist on the labels New World, Tzadik, artifact, Cold Blue, Frog Peak, Starkland, the wulf, Innova, and Pacifica Choirs. His numerous rounds are up for grabs at eamusic.dartmouth.edu/~larry/scores/other_peoples_scores/rounds/ index.html . By  Nathan  Carterette  -‐  Sub-‐Dean  (sub-‐[email protected]  )    Our  November  meeting  will  be  on  Monday  the  28th  at  the  Episcopal  Church  of  the  Redeemer,  in  Squirrel  Hill.  David  Mahler,  itinerant  church  musician,  will  share  nuts  and  bolts,  tricks,  tales,  secrets  everyone  knows,  and

few  new  bells  and  whistles.  You  will  find  the  most  recent  message  from  our  Dean  on  the  Home  page.  A  search  bar  that  allows  you  to  search  the  entire  site  is  on  the  right  side.  The  next  Upcoming  Event  on  the  chapter  calendar  is  listed  underneath  the  search  bar  for  quick  reference.

On  the  navigation  bar  (see   image  below)  you'll  see  several  new  tabs  to  help  you  find  what  you  need  quickly  and  easily.  A  Calendar  link  (1)  takes  you  directly  to  our  chapter  calendar  of  events,  also  available  under  the  Events   tab   (3).   A  Reservations   tab   (2)  will   take   you   directly   to   the   reservations   page   to  make   a   dinner  reservation.  Unlike  forms  on  the  previous  site,  you  will  not  receive  a  confirmation  email.  Rather,  you  will  see  a  Message  Sent  page  with  a  summary  of  your  submitted  information.  If  for  some  reason  you  are  unable  to  submit  the  form,  please  let  us  know  and/or  directly  email  "[email protected]"  for  dinner  reservations.

Under  the  "Events"  tab  (3),  you  will  be  able  to  link  to  the  calendar  showing  all  chapter  meetings,  OAS  Concerts,  and  any  other  events  submitted  by  chapter  members.    The  default  setting  is  a  one  month  calendar  view.    Use  the  left  and  right  arrow  buttons  (next  to  the  month  name)  to  navigate  to  previous  or  future  dates.    If  you'd  prefer  to  see  events  in  a  list,  just  click  "Agenda"  at  the  right  hand  corner  of  the  calendar,  and  the  format  will  change  to  a  list  of  events.  The  Events  tab  also  allows  views  of  meetings  and  OAS  concerts  only.  Upcoming  events  can  be  submitted  simultaneously  to  the  editor  and  webmaster  using  the  Submit  a  Calendar  Event  under  the  Events  tab.  You  can  also  contact  Regina  directly  at  [email protected].

The  Newsletter  (4),  Substitutes  (5),  and  Related  Sites  (6)  tabs  are  largely  unchanged  from  the  previous  site,  with  one  exception.  We  have  created  a  new  portion  of  the  site  called  Organs  of  Pittsburgh.  This  is  a  chapter-‐wide  effort  to  document  the  many  great  pipe  organs  in  our  city,  started  a  few  years  back  with  short  videos  made  by  our  chapter  members.  Links  to  those  videos  are  available  directly  from  the  page.  If  you  know  of  an  instrument  that  you  feel  should  be  documented  in  this  project,  a  form  is  available  on  the  page  to  request  more  information.

Please  remember  that  this  website  is  not  meant  to  be  a  static  source  of  information.    We  need  your  help  to  keep   improving!     If  you  see  something  that   is   incorrect,  or   find  something  confusing  or  not  user-‐friendly,  please  let  us  know  so  that  we  can  work  to  fix  it.  If  you  are  having  a  problem,  others  may  be  experiencing  the  same  difficulty.    And  finally,  as  we  work  to  upload  all  of  the  archived  images  and  newsletters  onto  the  new  site,  if  you  find  yourself  looking  for  something  in  particular  that  isn't  available  anymore,  please  send  an  email  with  your  request  to  Ryan  Croyle  at  [email protected].  We  hope  you  enjoy  the  new  site!

V{V{V{V{V{V{V{V NUNC DIMITTIS V{V{V{V{V{V{V{V{V{V{V The sympathy of the chapter is extended to Jack Longmore on the death of his wife, Debi; to Marlene Holland on the death of her husband, Rev. Dr. Paul R. Holland; and to the relatives of Dr. Harold W. Schnaible.

By  Edward  Alan  Moore,  DMA  -‐  Dean  ([email protected])  Dear  Colleagues,    It  has  been  seventeen  months  since  the  Pittsburgh  Chapter  hosted  the  AGO  Mid-‐Atlantic  Regional   Convention   in   June   2015.   The  memories   still   linger   of   the   fine   performances,  workshops,  and  wonderful  opportunities  to  reconnect  with  our  colleagues  from  around  the  region.

As   you   may   remember,   several   of   the   concerts   at   the   convention   were  professionally  recorded  as  part  of  a  special  video  project  spearheaded  by  Linda  Everhart.  Over  the  last  year,  videos  from  these  concerts  have  been  uploaded  to  the  AGO’s  YouTube  channel.  The  final  videos  have  been  uploaded,  nine  in  all,  and  have  already  been  viewed  by  tens  of  thousands  of  people  around  the  world!

In  this  issue  of  Pipelines  is  a  flier  describing  the  project,  including  links  to  all  nine  videos  for  you  to  view  again  and  again.    Thanks  to  Linda  and  all  who  supported  this  project.  These  videos  are  a  gift  to  all  who  watch  them,  and  a  wonderful  reminder  of  a  great  event  hosted  by  the  Pittsburgh  AGO.

I  look  forward  to  seeing  you  twice  this  month.  OAS  hosts  Chelsea  Chen  in  concert  at  Heinz  Chapel  on  November  18,  and  our  monthly  dinner  meeting  is  November  28  at  the  Church  of  the  Redeemer.    Buy  your  tickets  and  make  your  dinner  reservations  now.    See  you  there!    Ed  Moore,  Dean

Several  national  chapters  have  a  choral  lending  library.  This  can  be  a  wonderful  resource  for  the  chapter’s  membership.  While  serving  in  Buffalo  I  benefited  from  the  Reed  Jerome    Choral  Library.  If  you  would  like  to  see  what  it  looks  like  go  to:  http://www.agobuffalo.org/Reed-‐Jerome_Library.html  There  you  will  see  a  tab  listing  the  contents  of  the  Choral  library  that  include  composer,  voicing,  seasons,  and  instrumentation.  Among  the   listings  within  the  catalogue  you  can  see   inclusions  of  some  of  audio  cassettes,  video  cassettes  and  DVDS.

Might  there  be  any  interest  among  our  own  Pittsburgh  Chapter  for  a  similar  creation?  There  are  several  questions  which  will  have  to  be  answered  by  a  feasibility  committee  to  determine  its  viability:

1.   Would  there  be  any  churches  willing  to  donate  music  to  the  library?  2.   Where  would  the  library  be  located?  3.   What  criterion  would  be  used  to  determine  the  acceptability  of  the  donations?  4.   Who  would  administer  the  library?  5.   Who  is  willing  to  serve  on  a  feasibility  committee  who  would  work  on  the  administration  of  the  library?

If  you  might  be  interested  in  serving  on  such  a  committee,    contact  me  at:[email protected]  or  724-‐733-‐5470  A  report  will  be  given  to  our  chapter  cabinet  sharing  whether  there  is  any  interest.    The  Rev.  S.  Cyril  Hurnyak
