ÜÇGE Group and DIGI/TERAOKA Group entered into a strategic part-nership in order to expand sales and services in the retail, food, and manufacturing industries within the Turkish market. The partnership agreement has been signed by Gökçin Aras and Kazuharu Teraoka at the ÜÇGE BOSB Head Quarters.

Gökçin Aras has made a statement for the partnership that is valid from 4 May 2018. “As ÜÇGE, our partner-ship with DIGI is important for the evolution of retail sector in Turkey. As you already know, we have been serving to Turkish retail sector for 41 years. INTERVIEW|Kazuharu Teraoka

We performed an important interview with the Chairman of Teraoka Seiko Company, Kazuharu Teraoka who informed us about many issues, such as TERAOKA’s retail journey for 90 years, new cooperation with ÜÇGE and current impressions of Turkey’s retail and cutting-edge technology trends.

“ÜÇGE and DIGI will solve sectoral problems together”

Digi is a well-established company with a 90-year history. The story of establishment and branding is also very interesting. Can you tell us about the foundation story of Digi?

Digi was founded by my grandfather 90 years ago. In that period of time, the scales were thought as balancing of the product with the weight. How-ever, my grandfather developed the scales with dial indicator. By the way, our company was established along with the scale with dial indicator. For those periods, the scales with dial in-dicator were unfamiliar and the cus-

tomers had difficulty in understand-ing these devices. The sales were not so good because the prices were also high. My grandfather brought the product to forefront by having made its usage easier. To see the weight of the product on the screen by placing it in the scale pan is simpler than us-ing the traditional scales. That’s why my grandfather has adopted the di-rect selling method to the end user instead of sales by dealer, in order to show the ease of use to the cus-tomer. So he asked them to put 10 cents on the savings box, which could afford to only one coffee, and the sales person will come to the store to collect money every week. So this was the way to sell the scale at that time and that was the start. Those re-tail stores like butcheries, green gro-ceries, seafood stores, have become supermarkets as time went by. And we also changed our business into solution providing business to super-markets. So now, the products used within supermarkets and warehous-es or food factories who are provid-ing food and items to supermarkets and hospitality sector, those are our customer today.

You have the title of “Technology Architect”. How do you describe this title?

Today, the technology advances very fast and changes every day. To-day’s technology may not be used tomorrow, if you are just sticking to today’s technology. Then this is no longer an advantage, this is the risk. So we have to find out the new technologies, this is my job at the company.

How did you decide to enter into Turkey’s market?

I think it was 35 years ago and the Turkish market was very different from today. No supermarkets, there were only small retailers and they were us-ing balances, no electronic scale was used. And I adopted the same meth-od that my grandfather used 90 years ago. As you know, Turkish retailers did not have much money at that time. They earned small amounts of mon-ey. We started to sell the entry-level electronic scales to the customers by my grandfather’s method. Therefore, we entered to the Turkish retail mar-ket and continued our adventure by growing.

My grandfather asked his

customers to put money

every day in a box for a cup of

coffee. Every week the sales

personnel collected money

from these boxes. At that time,

the sale of scales was started

with this method.

ÜÇGE Elektronik, being in an important cooperation with DIGI, strengthens the connections with Japan by importing a Japanese student, Hiroki Kaneko, to its structure as a trainee.

About AIESEC:

AIESEC is a global network of youth, which believe that young leaders can change the world, and convey their experiences of experiential leadership development. AIESEC, which have conducted youth leadership activities with the opportunities of international internships and volunteering for more than 65 years, offers experiential learningexperiences in 128 countries. It is an independent, global, non-po-litical, non-profit organization managed by students or new graduates studying at higher education institutions.

In case of evaluating Japanese and Turkish retails, according to you what are the differences between these two markets?

Today, I do not think there is a differ-ence between them.

Nevertheless, we can talk about the differences in payment methods. In Japan, 80 percent of customers use cash, while only 20 percent of which use credit cards. But, more than 50 percent of the customers in Turkey make their payments by credit card. So as first, the payment method, Turk-ish customers are much more adopt-ed to the new technology I think.

Let’s talk about Hi-Touch technol-ogy. What can you tell us about this technology?

You know, we used to have a preset keys on a scale. By means of these keys, you do not have to enter the price every time while weighing a product. If the product that you want to weigh is a “meat, you just press the “meat button” and it is automatically displayed on the screen. Preset key is the idea that we developed 50 years ago, but today, number of product is getting more and more. Also the prod-ucts are changing frequently. It is be-coming very difficult the management and maintain the number of the pre-defined keys. For example, you have a new product named “ABC”. Where will you show this product on the screen and on which page? To overcome this difficulty, we have decided to activate the product on the scale with ESL

ÜÇGE Elektronik made contact with the affiliated company of AIESEC in İstanbul (International Association of Students in Economic and Com-mercial Sciences), which aims to contribute to the development and leadership of more than 600 youths by enhancing chances to their life. ÜÇGE Elektronik strengthened their staff with Hiroki Kaneko, the Japa-nese student. Accordingly, ÜÇGE Elektronik carried out a social re-sponsibility project that will support the growing business between Tur-key and Japan.

Hiroki continues his education at To-kyo University, International Business as a fourth-year student. During the internship program which will last in 3 months, Hiroki Kaneko will obtain information about business process-es, industrial experiences and Tur-key’s retail sector by ÜÇGE Elektronik. The team of ÜÇGE Elektronik being open to mutual development will also have an opportunity to get closely ac-quainted with Japanese culture.

BUILDING STRONG CONNECTIONS

WITH JAPAN VIA INTERNSHIP

(Electronic Shelf Label) to be placed on the screen by deactivating the prede-fined keys. The shop assistant allows product information to be displayed on the screen of the scale via wireless communication technology by touch-ing ESL (Electronic Shelf Label) on the product demanded by the customer.

Among hundreds of products, on the screen, you will no longer have to look for the product to be weighed, or it is not necessary for the shop assistant to memorize the product codes. Con-sequently, we call this technology “hi-touch”.

As a final question, how do you evaluate your visit to ÜÇGE?

This is my first time visiting ÜÇGE. I had a meeting with Mr. Aras in Tokyo but this is my first time. But even though it is the first time, I don’t feel it is a first time visit. You know, everyone is very kind and people are very welcomed to me. As if I know them for many years. And the culture, corporate culture of both companies are very similar. ÜÇGE is also the pioneer of shelving as you know. They are the first company in Turkey when shelving was not ex-isting they created a new market. And this is the similar business stuff that we are doing. So, the corporate cul-ture, the chemistry of both companies are much similar. They have strengths of customer based, scales, wrappers, ESLs. We have the strongest of the technology in the market. So I think this is the best combinations. We can be the winners in the market and I am confident by the first visit.

DIGI met with the members of Turkey Retailers Federation (TPF) at iftar-evening meal

Turkey Retailers Federation (TPF), head organization of the local chain markets, one of the most important links of the organized retail, brought the Turkish retail sector together on a special iftar-evening meal. ÜÇGE Elektronik and DIGI participated together at the organization.

In the organization of evening meal at İs-tanbul Cemile Sultan Grove, visiting Shan-ghai Teraoka company members; General Manager Guo Xing Shi, Sales & Marketing Manager Hideo Ando and Technical Servi-ce Director Ryan Zhen Shen and accom-panied by ÜÇGE Elektronik members have met with the President of Turkey Retailers Federation Mustafa Altunbilek and the managing board of TPF. The members hosted DIGI officials warmly and also ex-

changed point of views within the current situation and future of the sector. Board Members of TPF, Regional Presidents of Retailers Association, Manufacturers and Suppliers participated within this special occasion.During iftar meal, President of Turkey Retailers Federation Mustafa Altunbilek gave a welcome speech and expressed his great happiness to meet with all the rep-resentatives of the sector and continued

his words as followed. “As local retailers, we continue to create added value to our country in many fields with our confident structure in many regions that we are alre-ady located at. Competitive conditions be-comes more and more difficult each day, profits are falling and new generation pur-chasing habits are changing. Therefore, as manufacturers, suppliers and retailers we need to collaborate together efficiently, more than ever. Turkey Retailers Federa-

tion (TPF), head organization of the retai-lers, has 16 regional associations in total. Istanbul, Ankara, the Aegean, the Black Sea, the Western Black Sea, Bursa, Kon-ya, Çukurova, the Southern East, Kayseri, the Mediterranean Sea, Silk Road, Van, the Eastern Anatolia, TRNC -Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Retailers Association of Durable Consumption and White Appli-ances continue their activities throughout the country without any interruption.

It is expected that the endorsement of the local chains, which reached 33 billion TL in 2017, will grow 15% with 73 thousand employees in 2018.

ÜÇGE Elektronik, which provide service with different solutions especially such as devices of weighing and labelling used in retail and food production plants, added new technical and sales personnel to its expert staff.

ÜÇGE Elektronik is preparing for the future of retail with its dyna-mic staff. New personnel were informed about the processes by having attended trainings given by

the teams of Singapore and China Teraoka. Moreover, badges were pinned on new officers by Yoneha-ra Masakatsu, Sales and Marketing Manager of Singapore Teraoka.

The team of ÜÇGE Elektronik hosted its dealers, solution partners, DIGI officials from China, important representatives of Turkey retail sector and media. Hayri Tuncer, Member of Board for ÜÇGE: “As sector representatives, we are all on the same boat. Our route is clear, a better retail. In this case, no mat-ter how rough the sea waves are, we should take joint actions. We have to feel the same enthusiasm and sin-cerity with our stakeholders. Every single day, we are passing through a process that eliminates developing representatives and representatives not being up-to-date. We follow all the technological developments by doing our full share of work and we want to share our experiences with the ones who wants to stay perma-nent in the sector. Because we know that the slightest fluctuation in the market, influence everyone in nega-tive ways. We will continue to exist as long as we fight against the diffi-culties of sectoral impacts. The recent news of the new cooperation be-tween ÜÇGE and DIGI met with splendid re-actions in the retail sector. The trainings con-tinue in order to accelerate the processes and to create a beneficial sector. DIGI, one of the world’s leading companies in electronic scales, started giving trainings to the employees of ÜÇGE with their representatives travelling from 3 main groups, on the purpose of explaining DIGI culture and talking about new technolo-gies to be presented into Turkish retail. DIGI, which has large factories in China, Singapore and UK, provides trainings to the employees of ÜÇGE in Turkey in order to adapt them to the process and, moreover, informs them of the new technologies by hosting the company em-ployees in its factories. The trainings that were categorized within 3 main headings carried out, beginning with the arrival from Shanghai Tera-oka Company. The trainings in which all techni-cal staff, sales and regional personnel of ÜÇGE participated, were completed by the means of technical and sales introduction.

The employees of ÜÇGE, one of the most important suppliers in the retail sector, gradually continues strengthening their technical infrastructure by receiving trainings on cutting-edge technologies of DIGI, which provide efficient solutions to the sector.

The development of Balances, Weights and Measuring Devices were witnessed

At Tofaş Museum of Cars and Anato-lian Carriages, where people continue visiting the Exhibition of “The Poise of the Steelyard which consists of three thousand five hundred (3500) Balan-ces, Weights, Measuring Devices. The exhibition, which makes significant contributions to the development of the retail and also reveals the histo-rical progress, was visited by ÜÇGE team and Kazuharu Teraoka, Chair-man of Teraoka Seiko / DIGI. This exhi-bition being a collection of the Master Architect Mr. A. Naim Arnas, is a parti-

cular amusement to the retail sector. ÜÇGE managing board accompanied Chairman of Teraoka Seiko / DIGI, Ka-zuharu Teraoka within this important exhibition. At the end of the visit, Ka-zuharu Teraoka expressed his admi-ration on the exhibition by leaving his gratitude in the guestbook. Koç Hol-ding and Turkish Automobile Facto-ries Corporation (TOFAŞ) were foun-ded in 1968 by deceased Vehbi Koç, and the Koç brandmark continues to be Turkey’s source of pride with their social responsibility projects.
