Interviews
Interviewing:
• Know the Company, the Role: • Analyze job description and match to your resume experience
• Review summer surveys & networking notes
• Conduct Research • Deep-Dive Research/ create a company SWOT Analysis
• Research your interviewer (if you get name)
• Prepare for Behavioral and Case Questions

Analyze Job Description
Review Summer Surveys
Find Summer Surveys in the Offer Directory on the
MBACM website
Find CareerPath Notes and Interview Questions
Hint: Look at Tech, IB, Retail, PE & Etc. for companies that overlap industries
Conduct Research • Deep-Dive However it Works For You!
• Read analyst reports/ watch past investor calls
• Read public reports (i.e. Netflix’s culture report)
• Build SWOT Analysis
• Example 10-page cheat sheet: • Prepare for questions about the company
• What do you think are some of the biggest challenges facing our business today?
• What do you think should be our business priorities moving forward?
• What do you think the COMPANY has done “right”?
• Prepare for questions about the market/ competition• What is one big trend that you think will affect our industry on a whole?
• You! • Tell me about a time you worked with a diverse team.
• What’s the most valuable piece of feedback you received and how did you act on
it?
• Prepare questions for company
Prepare for Behavioral & Case Interviews • Prepare classic openers:
• Why are you interested in M&E?
• Why are you interested in this role? Why this company?
• Walk me through your resume. (Tell me about yourself.)
• Why did you go to business school? Why Wharton?
• Prepare 6-8 behavior interview stories (STAR framework)
• Influence: Tell about a time when you had to convince someone whose opinion differed from yours.
• Ambiguity: Tell me about a time when you made a decision with limited data.
• Conflict: Tell me about a time you had conflict on a team.
• Problem Solving/ Analytics: Tell me about a time when you had to solve a complicated problem.
• Leadership: Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult teammate and how you handled it.
• Prepare industry trends (and have an opinion!), case frameworks and technical questions (if applicable)
Sample M&E Interview Questions
• What trends are you seeing in the media industry?
• Do you think Moviepass model is sustainable?
• Of the 4 values at the NFL, pick one and describe a time where you demonstrated that value.
• How would you value a new television series?
• Tell me about the investment area you’re most interested in and the companies you’re most closely following in that space.
• If you could move one team to an international market, what team would you choose and what are the key components that you’d need to consider?
• What are your thoughts on Blockchain technology and its potential application in the music industry?
• What are you reading to stay on top of industry news?
Post-Interview: Thank You and Follow-up
• Finish the interview by reiterating that you are very interested in the job
• Thank the interviewer
• Follow up with a brief email:
• Play back a key point you learned from the interviewer about the company or role
• State a specific topic and elaborate on your informed opinion
• Restate your interest in the job
• “Next time I am in LA, I will let you know…”
• Send within 24-hours of interview
Panel Discussion
Appendix
Walk Me Through Your Resume – 3 Options
23
Option Pros Cons
1. Start with the role you want and work backwards
• Starting point: What is on the mind of the interviewer (why you want the job and why you are qualified) and connect the dots for him/her
• Demonstrate that you researched the role and company
• You may not be able to lead with a “hook” or strongest attribute
2. Start by stating 3 themes relevant to the company
• Highlight the three most important things about your candidacy
• Easy for the interviewer to follow
• Does not allow for sequential story telling as other options
3. Start from undergrad or before
• Provide a lot of detail• Sequential story is easy to
tell and prepare
• Risk losing the attention of the interviewer who is waiting for you to get to the point
• A lot of potentially irrelevant information
24
STAR FrameworkAssumption: past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior
“Tell me about a time that you…”
Situation • Describe the context of a specific event or situation from your past• Establish big picture and background information• Provide enough detail for the interviewer to understand• E.g., from a previous job, from a volunteer experience, Wharton
experience, or any relevant event
Task • Summarize your specific role, contribution or obstacle to overcome
Action • Describe the action you took • Use more “I” than “we” language, even if discussing a group project
or effort• Don't tell what you might do, tell what you did• Highlight your skills and expertise most relevant to the interviewer
Result • What happened? • How did the event end? • What did you accomplish? • What did you learn?
