About ASLIA Incorporated in 1978, ASLIA (formerly known as ACRID) is a

registered, non-profit society whose members are professional

sign language interpreters who provide quality interpreting

services to hearing, hard of hearing, and Deaf individuals.

Nationally, ASLIA is affiliated with the Association of Visual

Language Interpreters of Canada, AVLIC, which promotes

networking among existing interpreter organizations and

nurtures the development of the vibrant interpreting profession.

The encouragement, support and active collaboration that we

receive from Deaf and Hard of Hearing organizations

and individuals contributes immeasurably to every phase of

ASLIA’s work.

ASLIA Mission Statement The Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Alberta is a

provincial association which represents its membership and

advances the sign language interpreting profession by pro-

moting the provision of high quality service through the en-

dorsement of ethical practices, standards and the continuing

development of interpreting skills, underlying knowledge and

professional growth.

PAGE 3

Active Membership Individuals who have graduated from an interpreter education

program, or meet defined criteria, and are currently involved in the

provision of sign language interpreting are eligible for active member-

ship in ASLIA. Active members are also affiliated with the national

organization, AVLIC, and have completed a written test of knowledge

(WTK). Disclaimer The Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Alberta has agreed to

provide this list of members who have varying experiences in providing

interpreting services for hearing and d/Deaf consumers.

The association is not in a position to guarantee the qualifications of

any ASLIA member nor are we responsible for any errors or difficulties

in the interpreting process that may arise in connection with the

services they provide.

INTERPRETERS An interpreter may be requested when two or more people, or groups,

do not share a common language in order to communicate with each

other. Qualified interpreters possess formal training, sophisticated

language fluency, and are familiar with communication norms across a

broad range of settings. At times, the services of a Deaf interpreter may be required in order to

meet the communication needs of the parties involved in a particular

setting. A Deaf interpreter is a native signer; possess training and is a

recognized member of the Deaf community. A Deaf interpreter/s can

be used in various settings and is an integral part of the interpreting

team.

PAGE 4

Hiring a member of ASLIA ensures that the interpreter you hire has

graduated from an Interpreter Education Program or has

satisfactorily met this standard through other experience as

deemed by AVLIC and the Affiliate Chapters. As a condition of

membership, ASLIA members have agreed to abide by, and are

accountable to, the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional

Conduct. Ultimately, through membership, the interpreter

demonstrates a commitment to the profession and strives to

uphold a high standard of service.

In addition to asking for an interpreter/s who is a member of ASLIA,

the following questions may assist you in finding the appropriate

interpreter/s for your situation:

Certification with AVLIC (Certificate of Interpretation, COI)

Accreditation (provincial and/or employer screenings)

Years of experience

Areas of experience/expertise

Familiarity with nature and format of the appointment

When contacting interpreters it is important to provide the date,

time, duration, location and nature of the appointment. Names of

participants remain confidential until the interpreter establishes if

they are appropriate for the setting and if they are available, at

which point particulars can be discussed before confirming services.

At times, a team of interpreters (2 or more interpreters working

cooperatively) may be required due to the length of the assignment,

the number of consumers or the complexity of the task. It is

important to consult with the interpreter/s when determining the

need for more than one interpreter.
