Be able to list some words in the workplace that are ambiguous and

Understand the fact that texts are often structured in such a way that the main

ideas are separated from the supporting evidence and paraphrased or summarised

• Individual and group exercise. Do self study to determine the literal meaning of specific texts. In a group, compare and discuss differences of interpretation and develop strategies to correctly determine meaning of words

1. Individually study a specific work related text.

2. Identify unfamiliar words, and use acquired skills to determine the meaning of these words, listing them.

3. Compare and discuss the words and their meanings from the individual studies and note any differences in interpretations in the group

4. In small groups discuss these differences of interpretations and develop strategies to correctly determine the meanings of words

5. Present these strategies to the rest of the other groups

6. In a group make a list of all the ambiguous words that may cause misunderstanding

• A individual exercise to study specific work related texts and to supply substantiating documentation to prove reliability of the text

1. Individually study a variety of work related text.

2. Identify the author, source, validity and date of the document and compile a list of the documents deemed reliable

4. Find other sources that can substantiate the reliability of the source of the text and list them

5. In a group discuss the documents that were unreliable and what influence these documents could have if they had been regarded as reliable

6. Answer questions about specific biases in text and develop recommendations on how to respond to these biases

Be able to identify the author’s intended audience by studying which writing

techniques where applied

Know what to look for as clues to the author’s intent by studying the choice of

words, the use of figurative language, length of sentences, punctuations and

other techniques

Understand the existence of techniques used by authors to reach and

influence different audiences

Be able to identify certain authors techniques such as irony, humor, satire, sarcasm, etc. and explain their purpose

Understand that choice of camera angle, type of shot and cinematographic techniques are

An individual and group exercise to study a visual advertisement with the purpose of identifying the author’s intended audience and the effectiveness of the techniques applied

1. Individually choose three “good” and three “bad” TV adverts. Prepare a list to explain your observations regarding the targeted audience and effectiveness of the ads and discuss it in groups. Compare the conclusions and explore the differences focusing on the intended audience

2. Each group designs it own basic one minute advertisement applying the techniques learned on a specified product and video tape it

3. View these advertisement. Determine whether the opposing group could identify the audience it was intended for and the purpose

A group exercise studying newspaper headings and cartoons to determine the influence of language structure and images. A individual exercise studying workplace documents for bias.

1. Each group studies the same newspaper headings and cartoons. Discuss the views derived from the cartoons and headings. Compare the impact made by these and indicate which point of view the author is trying to shape or support.

2. Individually study workplace documents and underline any outdated or biased (racial, sexist, cultural, religious) words found.

3. Analyse the point of view created by these words and answer questions about you conclusions
