Agenda
• Objective– Describe location services and interoperability– Describe some current interoperability solutions– Describe current activities in location standard bodies, such
as OMA
© 2002 Openwave Systems Inc. CONFIDENTIAL
General Trends in Location Services
• TIA moving from emergency to commercial services– Telecommunications Industry Association, mostly this
hemisphere
• GSM moving from commercial to emergency services– Global System for Mobile Telecommunications, mostly
rest of the world
• Operators looking for technical solutions to interoperability
• Operators trying to figure out long-term business models around interoperability

FriendFinderTM
• Leverage network technology – Location– SMSC– WAP Gateway– Soon… IM and MMS
• Protects location data
• Protects privacy
• Easy subscriber self-provisioning
• Subscribers can set up individual or group lists
• FriendFinder is a Location Based Service (LBS) solution enabling subscribers to locate and communicate with friends.

Interoperability Drivers
• Operators– Mix and match equipment, bring on-line quickly
• Applications– Bring on-line in multiple networks easily
• Enterprise– Services across networks
• Asset tracking, fleet management, employee finder …
• Consumer– Find friends/family in different networks– Use favorite services when traveling
• Roadside help, local information, directions …

A + B have different/multiple GSM and TIA standard protocols and messages to obtain locationC has a standard TIA message in its architecture (being considered in GSMD has a different standard protocol and message in its architecture
Openwave Location Server has interoperated with 3 different HLR/MSC vendors in a single live network
Operators can plug and play with different equipment vendors

MLP – Mobile Location Protocol
• For Le interface
• MLP Version 3.0.0 complete– Standard Immediate Location Service– Emergency Immediate Location Service– Standard Location Reporting Service– Emergency Location Reporting Service– Triggered Location Reporting Service

RLP – Roaming Location Protocol
• For Lr interface between Location Servers
• Heavy lifting Is done , should be Ratified in 2Q/3Q 2003

PCP – Privacy Checking Protocol
• For interface between a Location Server and Privacy Checking Entity (PCE) – aka a PPR or LIR
• PCP Version 1.0.0 under development, which supports:– Location Privacy Checking Service.
• Early days, probably ratified next year
NOTE: an interoperability standard for sharing geoposition information, such as map rendering, ZIP code translation, etc. also being considered by OMA
Presence is also now part of the OMA

PN- 4747
• Currently in version 24, should be ratified later this year

Summary
• Interoperability is key to long-term success of location based services
• Some decent workarounds available today
• More robust standardized solutions are well on their way
• Business models to take advantage of interoperability are still being developed
