Alexa Martinez is currently in her junior year at St. Thomas University (STU). She majors in Criminal Justice (CJ) and is part of the 3+3 Pre-Law program. She will graduate with her Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice in May of 2020.
Over the Summer of 2018, Alexa interned in the Corporate department of HEICO Corporation, a successful and growing technology-driven aerospace, industrial, defense and electronics company. Having interned for the company before, she was invited back for a full-time internship over the summer. To prepare for her internship, she updated her resume to include extracurricular activities she was involved in during her first year in St. Thomas University such as overseeing the production of the Criminal Justice Newsletter for the Criminal Justice Club as Editor-in-Chief and being a founding member of STU’s chapter of Toastmasters. These two clubs gave Alexa skills that translated well into her internship. With her position in the Criminal Justice Club, she became more fluent in email etiquette that aided her in writing emails to corporate executives and employees across the globe involved with HEICO. Additionally, she learned the importance of prioritizing tasks, a major skill needed with strict deadlines and heavy workloads encountered in her internship.
Toastmasters (as well as a Speech course) aided Alexa in formulating public speaking skills that were utilized greatly in an “End-of-the-Summer” presentation she completed at HEICO summarizing her experience at the company to fellow interns as well as Human Resource superiors. She also left with knowledge that has translated well into her academic career; during her time at the company, Alexa became well-versed in white-collar crime, a major aspect of criminal justice.
For those interested in completing an internship, Alexa recommends that one begins the process early. If someone doesn’t know where to start, she suggests that they go to the Career Services Office. “I have heard that past interns for HEICO found the internship through the office, so I think it is a wonderful place to begin the internship process.” In terms of the application process, employers ask for updated resumes, applications, and interviews that should be given substantial time to prepare in a very attractive arrangement. Additionally, once an employer considers an intern, background and drug tests are necessary. “It’s important to set aside time for drug test appointments that don’t conflict with your school schedule, as they do take substantial time out of your day to complete.” Alexa remarks. “And above everything else, gratitude and good manners go a long way. Saying thank you and wishing someone a great day even if the experience did not live up to your expectations will leave an impact on the recruiter that may come back in a positive way in the future.”
Alexa plans to attend law school in the Fall of 2019 and graduate with her dual degree of a Juris Doctorate and Masters in Business Administration specializing in International Business. Her ultimate goal is to become a corporate attorney.
