Dear STU students, I hope that you are having a fantastic summer filled with fun activities, time to enjoy with family and friends, and beautiful memories. I would like to dedicate this month’s Career Services message to the freshmen that will start their college journey on August 27th. To do so, I would like to share some piece of advice to make their STU experience a great one!
1. Get to know the campus. Download a campus map from the STU website and ask around if you are lost. Upper classmen, faculty, staff, and administration are all here to help you!
2. Meet with your Academic Advisor early and periodically. You want to stay on track of your academic plan to graduate on time.
3. Learn about the various student clubs and organizations. That way you can meet other students with similar interests, and have some fun while you are at it!
4. Take care of your body and soul. There is a gym, a pool, a basketball court, and intramural activities on campus. The Chapel of Saint Anthony offers Mass at 12:15 PM Monday through Friday. Stop by Campus Ministry to get a cup of coffee and meet the team.
5. Visit STU Career Services to start planning your career.
Welcome to the STU family, Class of 2022!

SPOTLIGHT
Meet Our Bobcat of the Month!
Soccer Player on her Path to Starting a Career in Government
Michaela Kopecki is a hard-working student athlete here at
STU. She is majoring in psychology with a minor in
criminal justice as she plays for our women’s soccer team as
#23! Michaela transferred to St. Thomas just last year in Fall
of 2017 from FAU and will be graduating as a Bobcat in
May 2019! As senior year approached, Michaela realized
that it was time to start exploring her career options and find
an internship that could help her after graduation. To start
the process she first looked at her résumé. She had help from
her professor, Dr. Jeffrey Pickens, and Career Services
Director, Ms. Cristina López. They both helped her organize
and construct a cover letter and matching résumé that
showed a well-rounded, organized, and professional student.
Not only did they help her in the beginning steps, but as the
process went on, she was able to lean on these role models
when she needed advice or tips on how to proceed. Michaela
was originally looking at doing an internship with a
government agency for the summer but, with the
recommendation of Ms. López, she ended up scoring an
internship with a government agency she would actually like
to work for one day, Homeland Security Investigations!
After turning in her résumé and cover letter, Michaela was offered to go in for an interview. “Dress for
success” rung in her ear, as she has heard it many times, and learned how to do so through the Career
Services and their monthly talks.
Michaela prepared for the interview by researching the organization she was going to interview with,
learning their policies and what they stand for, and having questions written down she wanted to ask.
After the interview it only took a few days for them to call back and extend the internship offer. She
now interns at Homeland Security Investigations office in Doral and will continue to do so throughout
the Fall semester. Balancing not only being a full-time student and soccer season, but now a part-time
internship, she will be working hard this Fall.
The best advice Michaela can give to those searching for internship or career opportunities is to utilize
everything St. Thomas offers to help you. She asked all her professors for advice and letters of
recommendation, she sat with Ms. López multiple times and emailed her constantly for advice as well
and, at the end of the day, it helped her land her dream internship. “I couldn't have done it without
Career Services and my amazing professors helping me out,” Ms. Kopecki said. Another piece of advice
she would give is to do everything you can to create a great résumé. Join the clubs that fit your interests,
volunteer in different places, keep your grades up; all these little things add up to show on paper who you
are as a person before they are able to meet you.

5 Makeup Tips for Your
Next Job Interview
How to put your best face forward
By Natacha Medeiros
1. Research the company and
industry. For example, if you’re
interviewing for a bank, you
definitely want subtle makeup (i.e.
no red lips).
2. Less is more. Shine through to the
big boss interviewing you with less
makeup. Impress him/her by your
killer résumé and confidence.
3. Go neutral with your nails.
4. Take your time. Prep, schedule,
and execute the perfect interview
look flawlessly with just a little
planning.
5. Don’t experiment. Now is not the
time to step out of the box with
makeup that’s different. Stick with
something tried-and-true.
