1.0 Executive Summary
North South University, being the most reputed educational institution in this country, has
always tried to incorporate the contemporary phenomenon into its curriculum. In recent days,
market exposure and practical orientation have become very important for business students and
therefore, the university has duly included a compulsory internship requirement of holding into
its regular BBA program running under the Department of Business Administration. BBA
Program conducted by North South University is a very much theoretical and practical oriented
program in the arena of business and non-business financial sector. Since, the students of the
program were engaged with very much theoretical course work, the internship program can give
them real working experience. The sole aim of the internship program is to blend the students
academic knowledge with that of practical ones and give them an insight into the management of
organization in real life situations.
In these 12 weeks of internship period, I have always tried to match my academic knowledge
with the real life situation. Sometimes it matched and sometimes not. But in these 12 weeks I
have gained so much practical knowledge about the corporate world which will be helpful in my
future life. In this report I tried to explain about my experience of these 12 weeks of internship at
Agrani Bank Ltd.

Few main sections or category of general banking divisions of Agrani Bank are:
Account opening section
Remittance section

Cash section
Over my course of internship in Agrani Bank Ltd., I have several various sort of jobs and activities.
These working activities have definitely helped my knowledge and have given me a better
understanding of how general banking activities run in corporate branch of a nationalized bank.
Works that I have in Agrani Bank Limited are:

3.0 About Myself
3.1 Interaction with Supervisors & Co-Workers
I was supposed to report directly to my supervisor (Branch Manager). For any kind of interaction
with operation manager or other coworkers, we need to talk to them with personal direct
communication. At the dawn of the day the Operation manager distributes projects, tasks and
other responsibilities. And after completion or specific time we need to report to him or the
officer who is responsible for it. I used to send a request to my supervisor and co-workers before
going to his/her desk via intercom or by sending message through the messengers.
Whenever I felt little down or was tired, my supervisor and other colleagues always cheered me
up and overall environment was always lovely because of them. But I also noticed when it comes
to do their jobs; they are always very serious and cautious. As banking activities are very
sensitive and involves transaction of customers money, everyone was always careful in their
jobs. But as I was new, I sometimes made mistakes but they always helped me overcome those
problems. I also noticed how they always value customers above everything else. They always
have a mindset to always help the customers in every way they can. I have to admit I was quite
impressed by their dedication and integrity by which they served their customers. I also tried to
be like them, moreover, they made me think and work like them. I also tried to follow them and
6
tried to provide best possible service for my customers. I really enjoyed working with them and
consider myself lucky to have this opportunity.
3.2 Difficulties that I have encountered
While working in this bank I faced different types of difficulties but the friendly behavior of my
supervisors and co-workers always helped me to solve those difficulties. While opening account
at very first level I used to get stacked. Sometimes I did mistake for filling the information for
the client, sometimes I wrote on the wrong field. At very initial stage I forgot to take the
signature from the customers in account opening form or other papers. But my supervisors was
very much helpful, he gave me courage to do the work fearlessly, thats why I did the jobs
confidently and the number of errors become zero.
Sometimes I had difficulties with communicate with the customers as I had to ask different types
of question for the A/c opening and the customers are not ready to answer those, at that time my
co-workers always helped me out of the situation. This is very motivating factors to work in that
type of environment.
When I was working in the foreign exchange department I used to write different types for
vouchers. Sometimes I made mistakes in the narration part and the amount part of the voucher.
But when I informed to my supervisor for it, he just omit it and gave me new one and also
encouraged me saying that it was nothing. This behavior helped me to work with confidently and
efficiently.

3.3 Lessons Learned from Internship Period
Working in the bank enabled me to understand some aspects of being successful as an
employee. The first thing I realized that communication is usually an essential aspect to success.
It is also important for an individual to have the ability of multi-tasking during the working
hours. This will make him flexible in the work place. In banks, it is usually mandatory to ask the
right questions at the appropriate time. On the other hand, I also realized that is important
maintain punctuality in order to be successful. At the same time, one should have the ability to
network with people in the field of his profession.
While working at the Agrani Bank Ltd. I have gained or improved below listed skills:
Skill Area My Learning
Technological Skill Learned operation of most popular banking
software called FLEXCUBE which is
operated by Oracle. Also learned operation of
PcBank and Robust DC software.
Personal Development Learned about time management, punctuality,
professionalism. Also improved doing
multitasking job at a time.
People Skill Learned how to build network through
communication, how and when to show
empathy. Improved the ability to trust others.
Also learned about leadership skill, how to
8
motivate others and how to manage the conflict
etc.
Analytical Skill Got the knowledge about where, how & when
data can be found, the importance of a data and
where to use that data and effectiveness of a
data.
3.4 Comparison of Academic Learning & Internship experience
BBA Program conducted by North South University is a very much theoretical and practical
oriented program in the arena of business and non-business financial sector. Since, the students of
the program were engaged with very much theoretical course work, the internship program can
give them real working experience. The sole aim of the internship program is to blend the students
academic knowledge with that of practical ones and give them an insight into the management of
organization in real life situations.
When I started my internship program, initially it was a bit difficult to understand what was going
on around me. I felt like I knew nothing and I will not be able to do anything here. But as time
passed by, I started to get a better grasp about the working activities that was going on around me
and I started to understand some of the activities. There were many times when I was told to do
something and when I did the job, my supervisor told me I did the work incorrectly. Many times I
felt depressed but then my supervisor explained how I was wrong and what I should have done
instead, I found out my thinking was now wrong. And there were also some situations where my
academic knowledge helped me extremely while doing my internship program. My supervisor
9
praised me several times and appreciated my work. He also taught me ways how to do jobs more
accurately and how to provide better service to customers at all time.
So it can be said that real life experience and academic knowledge are not similar always. Real life
situations are far more practical and sensitive to different factors and these situations frequently
changes. But if we shape our academic knowledge according to the needs of real life application,
these academic knowledge can be very helpful in dealing with real life problems and can provide
us a guideline as I was helped during the course of my internship program.
3.5 Differences between My Expectation & Experience
I experienced lot of thing in Agrani Bank Ltd. which are different from my expectation. Some of
those are as below:
I was expecting that this bank will be modern as like other banks. But my expectation was
wrong. But the bank is not as modern as other banks.
As I am a student of Finance major, I was expecting that I will be assigned into the finance
related job. But I found not a single job related to finance as the branch dont need to do
anything for the finance related. The software and head office do that.
I was expecting that the officers of this branch will not be helpful but I reality they are very
helpful and friendly.
I never expected that Ill be provided training along with the officers of the most updated
banking software called FLEXCUBE which is operated by Oracle.
Whatever my expectation was, after completing my internship at Agrani Bank Ltd. I can say that
I have experienced a lot about banking world which will definitely help me in my future life.
10
3.6 Internship Experience and Career Plan
As I have done my major in Finance, I always had a dream to see myself working at a financial
institution someday. Working in a bank was also a possibility for me and after working here for
last few months, I must say, I see myself working in a financial organization even more. I have
heard many people saying that banking job is a boring job and so on. But in my experience I think
it is a fun job if we work in a good environment and with right people. I got just that in my
internship at Agrani Bank Ltd.
I have seen how cautious and punctual employees are when it comes to serve their customers.
Customers always get utmost priority. Everyone always put focus on meeting their deadline of
submitting and completing a job. But at the same time, there is a friendly environment and
everyone is helping each other. This working environment always soothes a person and he/she
feels that they belong there and they are not outsiders which happened with me also.
This internship procedure has made me realize that I belong in this kind of working environment
and I may consider this in the future and I may build my career in banking sector. Although future
is uncertain and no one knows what will happen in the future. I may end up somewhere else but I
would very much like to see myself working as a banker in the future. I loved the generosity with
which my colleagues guided me throughout my journey. They constantly motivated me and taught
me different things about working in a bank. I also liked that there is always a chain of command
in the bank and every decision follows the same guideline and is dealt with utmost care.
Whenever I had any trouble, my supervisor and other colleagues always helped and I knew they
will always provide me right guidance. This internship has definitely given me a reality check.
Banking job may not be that easy, sometimes it can be a bit tough but the experience and social
11
status someone gets by working in a bank is definitely worth the toughness of the job someone has
to go through.
3.7 Drawbacks
This internship was a great learning experience for me and it gave me an opportunity to taste real
world situations. But on the other hand, there have been a few shortcomings too which I have
witness while this internship was going on. I have seen that there are some weaknesses which
Agrani Bank experiences as a bank. Sometimes I have witnessed customers who come into the
bank with a perception that as it is a nationalized bank, it will not provide top notch service to its
customers. There is already a negative image imprinted on the minds of the customers which is a
major problem.
Another problem at Agrani Bank is that managerial efficiency here is not as good as its other
competitors which are private. Many employees do not have excellent command on modern
technological devices. There is a lot of bureaucratically designed barriers too which existed in
Agrani bank. A decision which can be made easily has to go through many processes which
consumes time and makes it lengthy and tedious. Promotion process here is sometimes flawed.
Sometimes people who are not credit worthy enough to be sanctioned for huge amount of loan
may be waived because of biased. Transfers of employees are also sometimes influenced and
controlled by other factors. Also employees at Agrani Bank Ltd. Are paid less than employees who
work at private banks so they may be are not highly motivated all the time.
Another fact was it was an unpaid internship. Its not that money was my first priority, I did it for
the experience and I have learnt a lot. But still, getting some return in monetary forms would have
been nice.
12
4.0 Conclusion
All in all, this internship was a great learning experience for me. It has given me a real world idea
about financial institutions. I also got the opportunity to apply my academic knowledge and dealt
with real life problems. This experience has provided me a guideline in which way I should pursue
my career in the future. I also get to work in a corporate working environment where everyone is
helpful and at the same time, gives utmost priority to the customers. I have learnt many general
banking activities while working in Agrani Bank Ltd. More importantly, I learnt how to work as a
team and the experience that I have gathered is invaluable.
Regardless of how much one thinks ones has learned about his chosen career from studies one will
learn so much information and acquire so many skills from an internship. One can never be really
clued up on what a job entails until one has been working practically in that role. An internship
provides the opportunity to gain hands on work experience that one just cannot get in the
classroom. First time job seekers arent usually desirable candidates, but companies are willing to
train them as interns and give them the experience they would need to get a job. I consider myself
lucky to have this opportunity and work as an intern at Agrani Bank Limited.

I started my internship on 12th January, 2015 at Agrani Bank Ltd, Rayer Bazer Branch Dhaka. I
passed my first day by introducing myself with all the officers of the bank. As I walked in my
first day, I was greeted with cheerful smiles and positive attitudes. The Branch manager, Md.
Mokarrom Ali Miah, introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what
types of things they work on. He showed me various departments within the work center, such as
the A/C opening department, cash department, and check clearing department, pay-order & TT
department, and credit department. Then I asked to start my job with general banking department
under Mr. Abdul Kadir , Who is in charge of general banking and clearing department as well as
transfer department. As I was the only one internee in the bank and there was one officer who is
managing the account opening department, I passed the whole week in that department. The
bank had different types of accounts such as savings account, current deposit account and ABS
(Agrani bank sanchaypatra) and APS (Agrani bank pension). Different account needs different
types of document and every account has unique features. The most important thing I learned in
that week about the PC Bank operation. PC Bank is a software which is used by most of the
banking organization of Bangladesh. When a client is done with account opening, a bank or
account opening officer has lot to do then. And I learned most of them in that week. When the
account form is full ok, a unique number is given to a client which is known as an account
number. In that software I had to enter all the information from the a/c form using that account
number then I had to scan the signature card.

I worked the first two days of the 2nd week in the account opening department as usual. As I was
comfortable doing that job, I was assigned to clearing department. My supervisor, Md. Abdul
Kadir, was helping me out at first with how the clearing department work. First two day he
showed me how to endorse a check and cross sign the check and put a clearing seal in check any
of those missing from the check the likely to return. After two days, I started doing clearing
myself. In clearing first I had to verify all the information in the check then accepted the check
from the customers. Only others bank check are went through clearing. After collecting all the
checks I had to endorse, crossing and put clearing seal. Then I had to total the amount, then I had
to fill up a MODA form, stating the total amount and how many checks are went for clearing.
Then I had to write a single debit voucher for clearing amount. The MODA form had four parts,
two of them went to principal branch and two of them was for branch purpose. After MODA
form I had to fill up base form for the total amount stating the number of checks, amount, date,
MODA number and branch code. After finishing that with the sign of manager those checks
were sent to regional office then to principle office and then Bangladesh bank for clearing. In
second week I also asked to open account and provide check books to the customers and entry
the check book number in the PC. To get check book customer had to fill up A/B form. We
provided both MICR and Non MICR check book. So I can say that I enjoy very much in my
second week of work.

This week I worked in the cash department. In this department the main task is to pay and
receive cash from customers. Cash department is divided into 2 sub-departments. One
department is for receiving electric bill, telephone bill, and other bills. And another department is
for receiving and paying cash/check payment, pay- order/demand draft etc. that week I worked
with cash in charge (MD. Zahidur Rahman). His job is to confirm high value payment, give limit
amount to the account officer, process account to account transfer etc. While working with him, I
learned different type of critical task that was related to my accounting courses. All the cash
officers start their day with receiving cash from the cash in charge. Each one has a cash limit.
Bank owns a parking account where the banks total cash balance is reserved. At first cash in
charge debit that account in the pc bank software then he gives the amount to the cash officer.
Then the cash officer credits that amount in his parking account and do the transactions. This
week I worked in cash in charges pc and did the all task of debit and credit. I also did the
account to account transfer job of salaries for different organizations, schools, as well as various
types of NGOs such as BRAC, ASHA. At first I debited organizations mother account then I
credited each of the employees account. While doing this job I find my account courses very
helpful because in those courses I learned about debit and credit in details. So selected
employees had to go for the training and along with them I also got the chance to be trained of
the new system. In that system I was introduced with oracle system, flex cube software, UNEX
software. There I learned all the operations of cash department, general banking department,
credit department, remittance department and mostly important the task of operation managers
in the new system. I also did all daily necessary task as well.

Now I am in my 4th week of internship and I know much about daily activities of a bank. This
whole week I worked in the remittance department. There was one officer assigned in this
department (Mrs. Aklima Akter). Her job is to pay remittance sent by the people who living in
abrade. So on the first day of this week the officer showed me how to give remittance to the
customers. Agrani bank provide service to customers over 150 countries around the world.
People from different places sent their hard earn money legally using Agrani bank remittance
service. The service includes western union, IME, prabhu, fast remit, easy cash, Money gram ,
infinity money express , xpress money and instant cash transfer. In all cases the sender is given a
unique pin code consisting of numbers, which is necessary to withdraw money. Receiver have to
show the code to the bank officer and fill up a form. Receiver have to provide an id card,
photocopy of passport, driving license or any other national identification, which will prove
receiver identity. Remittance officer check all the information for both receiver and sender, if
everything is okay then officer is clear to give money. In this week I also gave check books,
receiving check book requisition, writing check for FDR & Pay Order and entering them on the
PC. So on this week the officer showed me how to do those job and how to enter those into the
PC. Those are relatively easy jobs. Only just have to be careful while writing those check and
gave remittance to the people. I also send some mails on behalf of the manager to other branches,
head office and to the important clients informing all the activities regarding banks activities.
While writing those mails, I used my knowledge that I learnt in business communication course.
There I learnt how to write a formal letter and how to start the writings. This whole week I
worked with lots of pressure. I learn vary interesting facts in this week.

This week was very important for the whole bank. In this week the bank started to work with
new system named Core Banking System (CBS) which is operated by Oracle. Though it was
completely new system from the previous system (PcBank), 2 new IT officers from Head Office
came to help the existing officers of the bank. Among other officers I was also chosen as the
trainer. As I got full training on Flex Cube Database system, on the 5th week I was assigned the
job to help the officers to do their job in the new system. I started from the account opening
section. Now, after completing the form it needs to be entered into the system then an account
number will be automatically provided by the system. Though it takes time to enter all the data
into the system, and there are lots of clients to open an account, the officers instructed other
internees to help the clients to fill up the form completely then hand over the form to the officer.
And he will enter those into the system. After entering the data into system, the process is not
completed until it is authorized by the Branch manager. When the complete form is entered into
the system, Branch manager authorized the account from operation managers pc. In that week, I
also got some problems in running the program which was not faced in the training season. So,
along with me other officers also learn how to solve those problems from the IT officers. I
learned some important operation of the new system. We spent the whole week as like we
worked in a newly opened bank. We all enjoyed the week very much. But there was problem
with the customer service. But I think everything will be alright after working some week with
the new system.

In this week I worked in the Foreign Exchange Department. Though I was new in this
department, at the very first day of the week, the officer in-charge of the Foreign Trade
Department described me about the different terms & condition and work policy about the
foreign exchange. I did completely different types of works in this department like LC-F form
fill up, different types of voucher writing, forward letter writing, supplementary balancing etc.
LC-F form is the form used for the issuance of LC. I prepared some LC-F form with the help of
previous form. And also assigned individual LCAF number to those forms. Then I wrote
different types of vouchers like single debit voucher, single credit voucher, party account debit
voucher, party account credit voucher, IBDA voucher etc. While writing those vouchers I also
learned about the use of those vouchers and I think itll help me in future if I want to build my
career in the foreign trade department or want to do business related with foreign department.
Forwarding paper writing is another important and regular work in the foreign exchange
department. This letter should be sent to correspondence party to accomplish the LC process.
Following the previous paper, I prepared several forwarding paper and then the officers sent
those to concern parties. At the end of the each day the supplementary must be printed out and
those need to be balanced with the voucher generated in the all day long. And after balancing the
voucher is preserved at the store room for future issue. Though it was not my job to prepare
supplementary, I learned how to prepare and match it and how to preserve it. While working in
this department I didnt find anything similar to my BBA courses because it was completely new
and different from normal banking idea. Working in the foreign exchange department is very
interesting than working in other department. Here I learned so many new term and processes
which will help me to build my future career.

Now I am on my 7th week of internship I worked in the General Banking (GB) Department. As I
worked for more than 2 months in the bank I thought I had learned everything about banking.
But I was wrong. While working in GB I have learned so many new things. In Agrani bank, two
officers are responsible for maintaining GB department. I worked under those officers and they
showed me what they do every day. I observed that they did the most important work in the
bank. They had to maintain the day to day activities of all the officers. They had to maintain the
daily budget of expenses. They showed me how they maintain the daily budget. And also how to
record these expenses in the file as well as in the new CBS system. I had learn the process how
to ask for the permission. They are also responsible for a/c closing; FDR/DPS redemption; Block
amount/ Stop Payment/ Check Book stop etc. All these are done through the CBS system and
they showed me how to do this. In this week I have closed several A/Cs after getting application
from the A/C holder. On my seventh week of internship, I had to deal with different customers
with different purposes. I had to deal with accepting deposit, giving information about the rules
and regulations, saving deposit, short term deposit, fixed deposit receipt etc. I had to give
information about the interest rates regarding fixed deposit accounts etc. I had learnt many new
things this week. In ninth week of my internship I was in charge of GB department all the
necessary work that need to done was done by me. By this time I was aware of all the necessary
work that was done by GB department. I enjoyed my time in this department.

I worked the first two days of the 8th week in the account opening department as usual. In this
week I was assigned to do the entry of data in the PC. My supervisor, account opening office,
was helping clients to fill-up the form, then after completing the process he passed the form to
me to enter all the data in PC. On the 3rd day of the 8th week When I was working on the PC, a
client came to open a Fixed Deposit account of Tk. 10,00,000/-. But he wanted to make 3 people
as nominee of the account. He wanted to provide the share percentage as 50%, 25% & 25%. But
as per new banking rules one can make nominee only one person. But the client was determine to
do so. So with the permission if the branch manager we opened 3 different accounts of Tk.
500,000/- ; Tk. 250,000/- & Tk. 250,000/- and make one nominee for each account. On that day
branch manager told me to work on that PC. So from that moment, I started to entering data from
that PC. While working on PC, I learned some other important functions of the PC Bank
software which was not enabled in other officers PC. Because it was high level PC and that PC
was specialized and it can override any command given by other PC. That was most powerful
PC in that bank, only that PC had some extra facilities which were not available in other officers
PC like editing option, A/C freeze option, A/C close option, interest rate change option etc.
So I was showed how to do those and also told to check banks mail every day. In 9th week of my
internship I was told to stay in this department and continue to work all those work as usual. I
enjoyed those work very much.

On my 10th week of internship, I did works like opening accounts, giving entries online, checking
online forms manually, doing clearing of cheques, transfer entries. I mostly did works which I
have done in my previous weeks. I also gave entries for remittance, printed thanks letters, and gave
reply to mails sent by main branch of Agrani bank etc. I learnt how to give balance statements and
how they Debit and Credit those accounts. Anything that received they credit that and cash
withdrawal Debited. And different branch has different ID numbers. I had done some work about
foreign demand drafts previously. This week I also learnt more about how to write Foreign
Demand Drafts and how much sensitive those are and how the money goes away from the country
and also come to the country by using different nostros. In this week also learned how to do transfer
entries. Transfer entries is one of the most important work done by bank. Any bank or branch had
to accountable for each of transaction. After 4:00 PM when the banking hour is over. It was time
for transfer. All the transaction that was done should be match the computer entries and all the
vouchers, cheques, MODA, MO. I also assigned my 11th week in this department. My
achievements for this week would be that I have mixed with the people with banks and also with
the customers and learnt the procedures, rules and the bindings of a bank to make or give banking
facilities. The thing I have noticed that bankers whatever they do they make sure they are right
first attempt. They have a very high focus and aware of their responsibility.

Journal 10:
As this was my last week of internship, the manager gave me permission to work in any
department I wish to. So I didnt work in any particular department. I worked almost every
department whenever the officers needed help I helped them. Though it was my last week and
there was not so much work load nobody asked me to do any kind of special job. They asked me
to do small tasks like helping clients to fill up a/c opening form, writing FDR/Pay Order Cheque
leaves etc. I also worked on some other things this week like checking old data and searching
information from banks database. At the very last day the manager told me about the
responsibility of an officer and also instructed me how to behave in the professional life to
become successful. On the last day of my internship, my supervisor took me out to lunch. It was
a very heartwarming experience for me as I have never experienced anything like this before so
it was very nice of him. In these 12 weeks of internship I have learned many new things, made so
many bonding with the officers and finally prepared myself for the banking job. I hope this will
help me not only to get job in the banking sector but also in other sector. It was really a great
journey for me to have a great experience about the banking life.
