E0olu!ion o4 !" Word :ank;9
he word bank originated from Italian word 2*anca4. *anca means long tool. In
ancient time Italian )ews merchant used to do business of lending money by sitting
on the tools.
It is assumed that the word 2bank4 derived from the word *anca. o meet the
e&pense of war of 99=9 one type credit certificate was launched in Italy at an
interest rate of >? it was called as onte in Italian language and *anke in German
language then German language was widely used in Italy. As a result the word
*anke gradually changed to the word *anca from which the word *ank originated.
T" Em"r("n%" o4 Mod"rn ankin(9
he linguistics and etymology suggests an interesting story about banking origins.
*oth the old French word 2*an1ue4 and the Italian word *anca were used centuries
ago to mean a bench or moneychangers table. his describes 1uite well whathistorian has observed concerning the first bankers! who lived more than :@@@ years
ago. hey were money changers! situated usually at table or in a small shop in the
commercial district! aiding travellers who came to town by e&changing foreign coins
for local money or discounting commercial notes for a fee in order to supply
merchants with working capital.
he first bankers probably used their own capital to fund their activities! but it was
not long before the idea of attracting deposit and securing temporary loans from
wealthy customers became a source of bank funding. +oans were then made tomerchants shippers and landowners at rates of interests low as percent per annum
to as high as BC percent a month for the riskiest venturesD ost of the early bank

he banking industry gradually spread outward from the classical civili"ations of
Greece and 6ome into northern and western %urope. he early bank in %urope was

8Subse1uently! larger banking in *angladesh was gradually taken over by the
upcountry bankers who were known as Seth! shah etc. but subarna baniks continued
to operate in rural *engal. 0ith the *ritish gradually coming over to *engal and
settling here! banking in the form of agency house! e&changing house started to
flourish in $alcutta. %ntry of the *engalese into banking started in the part of this
century! especially in the wake of the swadeshi movement.
In 9=@@ A' 2-industan bank4 was established as the first /oint stock bank. In 9=CB
2*engal bank4 and in 9=C 2general bank of India 2 was launched. hen both the

2*ank of madras4 and 2bank of *engal4 merged to 2imperial bank of India4.
In 9HB= after the separation of *engal! bank business faced a severe disaster as
non(uslim bankers migrated to India. In order to rebuild the bank business State
bank of Pakistan was established as a central bank of Pakistan in 9HBC.
In 9H=9 *angladesh became independent. After liberation 2*angladesh bank was
