Step ONe: GET INFORMEd...● Reflect on your goals:

● Time commitment and travel dates: is this “do-able” for you?

● Read the course outline (on D2l)
● Attend the poster showcase and speak with students
● submit letter of intent (D2L)
MID-FALLEXPLORE, LETTER OF INTENT,
CONTACT
Letter of Intent...The letter of intent is submitted by you to indicate your interest in pursuing this opportunity for the upcoming spring/summer session. Keep in mind:
● this letter expresses your intent to formally pursue this opportunity.
● you do not have to have site confirmation to hand this
It is also a tool used by me to:
● determine your eligibility to participate ● gather information on the approximate number of
interested students and locations of potential sites
The letter of intent is available on D2L and is due to me on or before October 31 to the ECS drop box
explore…● Everyone has a different starting place:
○ inspiration/interest: a philosophy, pedagogy or a specific organization
○ the destination- where you have friends and family, interested in travel
○ following footsteps: going where other students have been before
Poster Showcase….SAVE the date
October 21
1:00-2:30
SLC Amphitheatre
Talk with students that completed internship this past spring/summer
Contact*****Must be within the field of early childhood (age range: birth to 8 years)
● Begin now...don’t wait!
● Do your research...have an understanding of your site, know why you want to be there and articulate this
● Contacting a few sites is encouraged, but be upfront about your “exploration phase”
● Contact once, follow up after a week if you haven’t heard back, follow up one more time, move on if no response
● Don’t be afraid to use the phone!! Sometimes emails get missed
***You must use your Ryerson email account for any email correspondence
Contact….Information to share:
WHO: Information about yourself (goals, previous experience etc...), your program and Ryerson, why are you interested in their site( do your research, have an understanding of the sites you are applying to)
WHAT: Unpaid internship, 5 consecutive weeks (25 days), timeframe(April 26-end of July)
***Some sites may want to have verification from our school or require further information, if so, introduce me through an email and I will provide further information so that they can make a decision
cONFIRM AND cONNECT
LATE FALLCONFIRM AND
CONNECT
confirm
● Confirmation from your site means that they have agreed to accept you as an internship student
● If you receive more than one confirmation, make a decision and then follow up with other site (s) to professionally decline
● Once you have confirmed and accepted an offer to be hosted as an internship student, you cannot accept another site
connect
● Once you have confirmed a site, you MUST connect them to me via email immediately. Please send an email (from your Ryerson account), to your contact and myself and introduce us
● I must connect with the site regarding expectations, legal agreements and answer any questions they may have
Connect and Confirm: Important dates
Internships must be confirmed and connected to me by no
later than
Friday, December 13, 2019
Why the early deadline?
Each site must enter into a legal agreement with Ryerson and this takes time considering factors such as:
● language and time differences● other competing demands on your site● negotiations that may need to be made
If we do not have a legal agreement established, you cannot use the site.
You are therefore strongly encouraged to contact sites that we already have agreements with
(see D2L for list of sites with current legal agreements)
