AIMS OF THE WORKSHOP

The current World-Wide Web enables an easy, in-stant access to a vast amount of online information.However, the content in the Web is typically for hu-man consumption, and is not tailored for machineprocessing. The Semantic Web is hence intendedto establish a machine-understandable Web, andis currently also used in many other domains andnot only in the Web. The World Wide Web Consor-tium (W3C) has developed a number of standardsaround this vision. Among them is the ResourceDescription Framework (RDF), which is used as thedata model of the Semantic Web. The W3C hasalso defined SPARQL as the RDF query language, RIFas the rule language, and the ontology languagesRDFS and OWL to describe schemas of RDF. The us-age of common ontologies increases interoperabil-ity between heterogeneous data sets, and the pro-prietary ontologies with the additional abstractionlayer facilitate the integration of these data sets.Therefore, we can argue that the Semantic Web isideally designed to work in heterogeneous Big Dataenvironments.

We define Semantic Big Data as the intersectionof Semantic Web data and Big Data. There aremasses of Semantic Web data freely available tothe public - thanks to the efforts of the linked datainitiative. Many of these freely available Seman-tic Web datasets are accessible via SPARQL queryservers called SPARQL endpoints. Everyone can sub-mit SPARQL queries to SPARQL endpoints via a stan-dardized protocol, where the queries are processedon the datasets of the SPARQL endpoints and thequery results are sent back in a standardized format.Hence, not only Semantic Big Data is freely avail-able, but also distributed execution environments forSemantic Big Data are freely accessible. This makesthe Semantic Web an ideal playground for Big Dataresearch.

The goal of this workshop is to bring togetheracademic researchers and industry practitioners toaddress the challenges and report and exchangethe research findings in Semantic Big Data, includ-ing new approaches, techniques and applications,make substantial theoretical and empirical contribu-tions to, and significantly advance the state of theart of Semantic Big Data.

CATEGORIES OF PAPERS

The workshop solicits papers of different categories:Research Papers propose new approaches, theo-ries or techniques related to Semantic Big Data in-cluding new data structures, algorithms and wholesystems. They should make substantial theoreticaland empirical contributions to the research field.Experiments and Analysis Papers focus on the ex-perimental evaluation of existing approaches in-cluding data structures and algorithms for Seman-tic Big Data and bring new insights through theanalysis of these experiments. Results of Experi-ments and Analysis Papers can be, for example,showing benefits of well-known approaches in newsettings and environments, opening new researchproblems by demonstrating unexpected behavioror phenomena, or comparing a set of traditionalapproaches in an experimental survey.Application Papers report practical experienceson applications of Semantic Big Data. Applica-tion Papers might describe how to apply SemanticWeb technologies to specific application domainswith big data demands like social networks, websearch, e-business, collaborative environments, e-learning, medical informatics, bioinformatics andgeographic information system. Application Pa-pers might describe applications using linked datain a new way.Vision Papers identify emerging new or future re-search issues and directions, and describe new re-search visions having demands for Semantic BigData. The new visions will potentially have greatimpacts on society.Demo Papers deal with innovative systems andapplications for Semantic Big Data. These pa-pers describe a showcase of the proposed sys-tem/application, but may also explain the noveltyof the system’s architecture. We are especially in-terested in demonstrations having a WOW-effect.

For all categories (except for demo papers), weaccept two different types of papers: Short and Fullpapers. The length of full papers cannot exceed 6pages. The length of all other papers (i.e., short anddemo papers) cannot exceed 4 pages. Acceptedfull and short papers will be presented in oral presen-tations. Demo papers will be presented as part of acombined demo and poster session. All acceptedfull and short papers will also be presented as postersin the combined demo and poster session in orderto increase interactivity and discussion with the au-dience.
