The varsity baseball player originally came to Douglas to take General Studies, but soon after joining the Student Ambassadors he found his true calling. Through the Ambassadors Program he heard motivational speakers discuss topics that were important to them, and decided to devote himself to finding his passion. “When I looked into the Intercultural and International Studies program, something clicked with me. As a diplomat, I can travel all over the world while learning about new cultures and helping those in need.” After earning his two-year associate degree, Surya plans to transfer to university to wrap up the final two years he needs for a bachelor’s degree in International Relations.

UNIVERSITY TRANSFER

DMITRII PLIASUNOVJumping straight into university can be difficult for any student. That’s where Douglas College’s University Transfer program comes in. For Dmitrii, Douglas College was a starting point that laid the foundation for further education. Born in Russia, Dmitrii was advised to consider studying at Douglas by his language school. “I was worried about what and how to study in a different country, so I decided to apply to Douglas to take some time to adjust to a new educational environment,” he says. After graduating with an Associate of Arts Degree in Intercultural and International Studies, Dmitrii transferred to Simon Fraser University to study international security. He credits Douglas’s small class sizes and welcoming community for his smooth transition. “Douglas helped me adjust to a new country’s educational system and helped me understand who I really am and what I want to do in life,” he says.

HORIA DUMITRUHoria learned first-hand while working retail that even if you have an amazing product, it will not sell if people don’t know about it. That was what drew the native of Romania to pursue a Marketing Diploma at Douglas College. “It was a natural fit,” Horia says. “It was very challenging at first, but the small classes and the friendly teachers helped me get on track.” As part of his practicum arranged through Douglas, Horia was assigned his first client, which gave him valuable hands-on experience. Now, he is applying what he learned with a new position at a software company in the heart of Vancouver. “I couldn’t ask for more. That practicum made my experience at Douglas so worthwhile,” he says.

SAYA SOMAIt can be scary to move to a new country where you don’t know anyone. For Saya, leaving her friends and family behind in Japan to move to Vancouver was a big step. Flash-forward to her last year at Douglas College: Saya is now an Associate of Arts student focusing on Intercultural and International Studies, and has a close group of friends, many of whom she met while working on campus. “We have this great community of friends who all treat one another like family. I feel really lucky that I came to Douglas College and I love the people here,” Saya says, noting her friends are both international and Canadian students. With so much support from instructors and peers, Saya plans to carve a career path for herself in Canada and become a permanent resident.
