3.5 Reading Comprehends some main ideas of familiar topics of classroom and non-classroom materials,but very little detail of complex topics and literature. Can only read simple short sentencesand at a slow pace Cannot read a text without use of dictionary.
5.5 Listening Comprehends most classroom lessons. Comprehends most social topics outside of class,but is slightly challenged by complex social and cultural references. Comprehends Englishspoken in familiar native accents.
4.0 Grammar Grammar descriptors are not a component of the iTEP Ability Guide.
4.5 Writing Writes essays and reports, but grammar and vocabulary frequently lack precision andsophistication. Expresses simple relationships between ideas and with grammatical andsemantic difficulties. Exhibits weak organization and awkward sentence structure.
3.5 Speaking Communicates basic day-to-day topics and expressions but makes grave errors in grammarand word choice. Pronunciation requires significant effort from listeners.
iTEP Level CEFR Ability Guide
4.2 B1 Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularlyencountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilsttravelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text ontopics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events,dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
What do the results mean? • Basic proficiency level in English • Comparable to Common European
Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR), Cambridge ESOL & TOEFL levels

What does it test? • English proficiency levels in:
– Reading – Writing narratives – Writing arguments – Mathematics
How is it administered? • 5*40 minute tests
• Two mornings
• Write in a booklet
What results do we get? • Proficiency scale of 1-9
– Level 5 average for 15 year olds – YCIS compared to world, like schools and
region – Individual reports on skills – Cohort reports on questions
• Overall rating, plus ratings for each skill area
What do the results mean? • Basic proficiency level in English • Comparable to OECD’s PISA levels • A snapshot of where a child is in their
language learning journey • Inform teaching and learning activities and
targets
