>16703 C 5 T 1130-120 MEB 102 Pianko,N Israel-Palestine in a Historical Perspective Israel and Palestine continue to raise some of the most important global questions about nationalism, human rights, American foreign policy, and international security. Yet political and academic conversations about the region are increasingly polarized into polemical positions that sever the possibility of constructive conversations across disciplines, fields, and political positions. The goal of this course is to give students the opportunity to gain an in-depth appreciation for this contemporary global hotspot by studying recent scholarship on the history of Zionism and the State of Israel in conversation with the history of Palestinian nationalism. Special emphasis will be placed on the relationship between the conflicting narratives about the history of Israel and Palestine, especially on key issues such as the 1948 War, Palestinian Refugees, the post-1967 Israeli control of the West Bank/Gaza, and the Peace Process. No prior background in the region or conflict is required. >16705 E 5 Th 330-520 THO 215 Basic,Denis What’s wrong in Europe today and how to fix it tomorrow? In this course students will be reading a few seminal works discussing the causes and consequences of the EU instability and potential disintegration while addressing the questions of the (re)emergence of nationalism, populism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism in Europe. Thus, the first set of reading materials will cover the history of the right wing movements in Europe since WWII and the second set will discuss the (Neo-)Liberal origins of the the EU, as well as the Neo-Marxian critique of the Neo-Liberal economic policies as perceived causes of the current instability. Class discussions will be based on online video materials besides the assigned reading materials.

This course will use a range of anthropological, specifically ethnographic, texts and films to examine the complicated relationship between environmental politics and environmental justice across the world. Specifically, students in the class will critically engage with contemporary environmental movements in India, Bangladesh, the United States, Guatemala, Ecuador, Brazil, China, Ghana, and South Africa (among other places) to reflect on the ways in which environmental politics can simultaneously advocate for and conflict with claims to social and environmental justice. We will focus on a range of themes, including the bestowal of legal rights on “Nature” in recent years; right-wing environmentalism in the global south; ecofeminism and feminist ecologies; and religious environmentalism. No pre-requisites required. Please feel free to email the instructor ([email protected]) for an add code.

Restr 10342 A 3 TTh 1000-1120 THO 234 Govindrajan,Radhika ENVIRONMENTAL POLITICS AND JUSTICE IN THE ANTHROPOCENE
