Important Reminders
6
07/2020 F:/intrnat/GISS_Orientation /Orientation Informational Handout
• ALWAYS read e-mails from Graduate and International Student Services (GISS)
• Keep your passport valid.
• Check I-20 (F-1 Visa Holders) or DS-2019 (J-1 Visa Holders) to make sure name, birthday, degree level and
major are all correct.
• Read page 3 of your I-20 / page 2 of your DS-2019.
• ALWAYS remember to keep all I-20s/DS-2019s given to you from any institution.
• Complete 12 hours each semester if you are an undergraduate student and 9 hours if you are a graduate
student. IEP students must meet full-time program requirements for enrollment as directed by the English
Language Center. Prior approval is required from Graduate and International Student Services to take fewer
hours.
• If you need to drop a class and it will cause you to drop below full-time enrollment, speak to the Graduate and
International Student Services before you drop the course(s).
• Never let the end date on item #5 of your I-20 expire before completing your program.
• Visit the Graduate and International Student Services to get a new I-20 for any change in major, language
requirement, or degree level.
• After you finish your degree, F-1 students must leave the U.S. within 60 days, unless you have applied for
Optional Practical Training (OPT) or will continue to a new degree program at UCM or another school.
• Do NOT work off campus without prior authorization.
• If you work on-campus, limit your time to maximum 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters and
maximum 40 hours per week during the summer and winter breaks. Violation of work hours are grounds for
termination of your status.
• Report change of local address to the Graduate and International Student Services. By law, students must notify
the Graduate and International Student Services of address changes within 10 days of moving to a new address.
• Have a Graduate and International Student Services advisor sign your I-20 or DS-2019 if traveling outside the
U.S.

Social Opportunities-A university education is more than what happens in the classroom. At UCM, students are
encouraged to participate in a variety of activities outside of the classroom that will create a well-rounded educational
experience. Campus Activities include dances, plays, films, concerts, bowling, clubs, intramural sports, and student
government. Student Organizations include about 180 registered student organizations. For information, see the Office of
Campus Activities, Elliott Union 217. https://www.ucmo.edu/current-students/student-experience/office-of-student-activities/ International Student Organization-ISO is an ethnically diverse group; members come from many different cultures
and countries. The purpose of the organization is educational as well as social. Membership fees are $15 for the academic
year. Call the Graduate and International Student Services for information at 660-543-4195. On Campus Parking-Parking permits are required to park on campus and are available in a limited number. Students
who wish to park in University parking lots must purchase a parking permit from the Parking Office at the Department of
Public Safety, 306 Broad St. The cost per semester (Fall or Spring) is $50 and prices vary for Summer depending on
which sessions the student is attending. Bike Permits-If you own a bike and will be riding to campus or if you live on campus you must obtain a bike permit from
the Parking Office at the Department of Public Safety, 306 Broad St. The permit is free. It is highly recommended that
you register your bike and keep it locked when parked.
Weather Safety Tips-Tornadoes are common in the Midwest during fall and spring. If you hear the loud sirens outside,
that is the warning signal that a tornado is in the immediate area. This is the signal that you should quickly take cover. The
safest place to take cover is in the basement of a building away from windows. In case of inclement weather, (ice and/or snow) all classes on the Warrensburg campus will be held unless the President
closes the University. Closures will be announced via news media and other communication methods (ex. radio KOKO-
AM 1450 and Kansas City major television stations). Electronic messages will be placed on the campus e-mail systems,
texting center and the University’s web site.
Information about Classes Communication-If you have any questions about your class, please ask your instructor. If you are absent, or will miss a
class, you must contact your instructor immediately. The instructors are here to help you, but you must ask for help.
Syllabus-For each class in which you are enrolled, the instructor will provide a syllabus outlining specific details for that
class. Items which may be covered on your syllabus include: instructor’s name, office phone, office hours, e-mail address,
paper guidelines, homework, readings, textbooks needed, class expectations, and much more. Keep your syllabus for each
class so you can refer to it throughout the semester. Homework/Assignments-The amount of homework, how the paper should be typed, and due dates will vary with each
instructor. Refer to your syllabus and if you still have questions, ask your instructor. Blackboard-Blackboard is an on-line course management system that provides 24/7 access to course content,
communication and assessment tools, and is provided for all students. Please check with your instructor whether
Blackboard will be used and when the section will become available. Remember, your Blackboard sections will not show
up in your course list until your instructor adds you to the class.
UCM Student Email System-Each student will be provided with a campus email account. This email will be used for all
communication coming from campus offices, including billing from student financial services. Campus-wide
announcements of activities, programs, weather issues, and any class cancellations will be through this email account. During the fall and spring semesters, UCM uses a procedure to validate student enrollment. Students must attend each
class on the first day the class is scheduled to meet in order to stay enrolled in the class. Please remember that enrollment
in courses is your responsibility as a student. Do not assume that if you do not attend a class that the university will
automatically drop you from the course(s).
The General Education Assessment (GEA)
8
07/2020 F:/intrnat/GISS_Orientation /Orientation Informational Handout
The General Education Assessment (GEA) is a computer-based multiple-choice exam that measures four
intellectual skill areas ̶ Critical Thinking, Reading, Writing and Mathematics. As a state supported, nationally
accredited university, this exam is an important assessment of UCM’s general education program, student
learning, and skill level. When a UCM undergraduate or new incoming Transfer student has earned 60 credit
hours, the TC Hold is placed on their account preventing them from registering for classes. TC Holds are lifted
within 24-48 hours of completion of the exam
GPA What is a “GPA”? GPA means “Grade Point Average”. This is the average of all the grades you receive in classes here at UCM. How is it calculated? Each grade you receive is assigned a certain number of points: A = 4 points B = 3 points C = 2 points D = 1 point F = 0 points Each class is worth a certain number of credit hours, typically 3 credits per class. The number of credits is multiplied by
the “points” earned to give you the total number of “grade points” earned for each class.
Class Grade Points X Credits = Grade Points Biology B 3 4 12 History C 2 3 6 English A 4 3 12 Business D 1 3 3 Total: 13 33 Grade Point Average = 33/13 = 2.54 Why is this important? GPA is extremely important! It is used to determine eligibility for scholarships and graduate study.
Also, many employers look at GPA when choosing whom to hire. Are IEP grades included in GPA? For undergraduates, YES!! That’s why doing your best in class is so important. Being
successful in the IEP can help your future GPA. On the other hand, not taking class seriously, will negatively affect your
GPA. For graduate students, IEP grades do not affect your GPA. However, they will appear on UCM transcripts What is Expected in a University Classroom? Complete homework before class. Prepare for class by reading assigned readings and print out assignments/notes. Be on time to class and turning in assignments. Bring your textbook, notebook, and pen or pencil. Take notes, be attentive, no sleeping. Dress is casual. Hats and sunglasses should be removed while in the classroom. Remove all electronic equipment, I-Pods, headsets, phone adapters. Phones should be put on silent or shut off. All professors & instructors should be treated with utmost respect. Visitors in the classroom must be cleared with the instructor prior to the visit.
Some General Suggestions
9
07/2020 F:/intrnat/GISS_Orientation /Orientation Informational Handout
1. Consult with your advisor and other instructors often. Faculty office hours will be posted on office doors and on the
course syllabus. Usually, appointments are not necessary if you want to see a faculty member during posted office hours.
If those times are not convenient, other times may be available by appointment. Send an email directly to the instructor to
ask for an appointment.
2. Before considering dropping a course, please talk with the instructor. Then talk with the Director or Coordinator of
International Student and Scholar Services about your immigration requirements. The decision about what to do will be
yours, but faculty/staff may be able to suggest alternatives which you have not considered.
3. In the United States, University professors and employers require regular attendance. Students who are absent more
than allowed on the syllabus or drop a course without prior approval are in danger of losing their student visa status with
U.S. immigration.
4. In this region of the United States it is customary for people to bathe or shower daily with soap and to wear deodorant
to control their personal body odor. Academic Honesty
Honesty in all endeavors is essential to the function of society. Honesty in the classroom among students and between
students and faculty is a matter that should concern everyone in the University community. Academic honesty is one of
the most important qualities influencing the character and image of an educational institution. As higher education is
challenged to improve the quality of its programs, there is great value in emphasizing academic standards and integrity. It is the University’s responsibility to provide an educational process that informs both students and faculty of their rights
and responsibilities regarding such important matters as cheating, plagiarism, and professional ethics. Most of what is
considered unethical or dishonest behavior can be avoided if faculty and students clearly understand both what constitutes
these practices and their consequences. Student Responsibilities-Students must be aware that the consequences of violating standards of academic honesty are
extremely serious and costly and may result in the loss of academic and career opportunities. Students found to have
committed violations against academic honesty face removal from University classes and degree programs, and/or
suspension from the University, while remaining fully responsible for payment of current and any past due tuition and
fees. Student Handbook: https://issuu.com/ucentralmo/docs/ucmguidetogooddecisionmaking?e=9595811/51394453

FERPA https://www.ucmo.edu/current-students/office-of-the-registrar-and-student-records/ferpa2/
FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. It is also known as the Buckley
Amendment. FERPA, as amended, sets forth requirements regarding the privacy of student education records.
FERPA governs the disclosure of education records maintained by an educational institution and access to those
records.
To Whom does FERPA apply? The Act applies to all institutions that are the recipients of federal aid
administered by the Secretary of Education. FERPA applies to postsecondary institutions (colleges and
universities) as well as K-12 schools. FERPA applies to all current and former UCM students, regardless of
their age or status with regard to parental dependency. This includes students enrolled as dual-credit high school
students and those enrolled as continuing education and non-degree seeking students.
When do FERPA rights begin for a student at UCM? UCM students are covered under FERPA upon first
enrollment in courses.
What are student rights under FERPA? FERPA provides eligible students the right to:
• inspect and review their education records within 45 days of the receipt of the request (some limitations) • request to amend their education records that the student believes are inaccurate or misleading and to
request a hearing if the request to amend is not granted • have some control over the release of information from their educational records • obtain a copy of the institution’s FERPA compliance policy • file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education • The intent of the legislation is to protect the rights of students and to ensure the privacy and accuracy of
education records.
Who may have access to student information? The student and any third party designated with the student’s
written request. School officials (as defined by the University) who have “legitimate educational interests”.
A person in response to a lawfully issued subpoena or court order, as long as the University makes a reasonable
attempt to notify the student first.
What is an “Educational Record” as defined by FERPA?
With certain exceptions (noted below), an education record is any record (1) which contains information that is
personally identifiable to a student, and (2) is maintained by the university.. Education records include any
records in whatever medium (handwritten, print, e-mail, magnetic tape, film, diskette, etc.) that are in the
possession of any school official. This includes transcripts or other records obtained from a school in which a
student was previously enrolled.
What information is NOT considered part of an “Education Record”?
Sole possession records (memory-jogging records) or private notes held by school officials that are not
accessible or released to other personnel
Law enforcement or campus security records that are solely for law enforcement purposes
Records relating to individuals who are employed by the institution (unless contingent upon attendance)
Records relating to treatment provided by a physician, psychiatrist, psychologist or other recognized
professional or paraprofessional and disclosed only to individuals providing treatment
Records of an institution that contain only information about an individual obtained after that person is no
longer a student at that institution (alumni records)

Paying Your Bill The University of Central Missouri (UCM) can only accept payment for billed expenses related to student
enrollment, on-campus housing, meal plans, and mandatory health insurance. Students are billed each semester:
fall, spring, and summer.
UCM will not accept payments in excess of billed charges. UCM cannot accept payment for an entire year’s
costs. Students may establish a personal bank account instead. U.S. Bank has a campus branch located in the
Elliott Student Union. Funds for living expenses, such as off-campus housing, food, and transportation, should
be sent to the student directly or wired to the student’s personal bank account.
Bank Draft: Demand drafts or checks issued on behalf of the student enrolled at UCM should be made payable
to the University of Central Missouri. The amount of the draft should not exceed the actual amount billed. The
University cannot accept payment for the full year.
Wire Transfers: All wire transfer payments on behalf of UCM students must be initiated through FLYWIRE.
Funds transferred can only be for the actual charges billed by UCM, such as tuition, fees, room, and board for
one semester. UCM cannot accept payment for the full year.
3rd Party Payments: Government or employer sponsorships should be submitted through UCM’s 3rd Party
billing process. Payments can be accepted for billed UCM expenses only. Payments may be sent to UCM on
behalf of the student through wire transfer or bank draft. Overpayments cannot be refunded to the student and
will be returned to the bank.
Student Loans: Loans obtained by students from their home bank should be payable to the student via demand
draft or transferred electronically to the student’s personal bank account. The student can then present payment
to UCM for the semester’s charges when billed.
Non-payment of charges or failure to make payment arrangements by the due date will result in additional fees being
charged. Additional fees are added to the student account each month that payments is not made when due. Collection
costs are assessed if collection action becomes necessary. For additional information regarding the payment of charges,
visit www.ucmo.edu/sfs Minimum Payments Your student account is billed for the full amount due during each month. You will have the option of either paying your
entire bill at the beginning of the semester or making monthly payments. If you choose to make monthly payments, you
must pay at least 20% percent of the total balance each month. Each payment will be due the 15th of each month
beginning with the first month the semester begins. After the 15th of each month, a 1.5 percent fee will be assessed to
ANY remaining balance on the student’s account. This fee will be added every month until your balance is zero. To View and Pay Your Bill Online: Login to MyCentral using your student ID and password, click on the Student
Services Tab and then click View and Pay My Bill link.

Health Care
Student Health Insurance
All students are required by the University of Central Missouri to have health insurance. All international students are
automatically enrolled in the International Student Health Insurance Plan when they enroll in classes at UCM. For more
information, you can refer to the International Student Health Insurance Plan documents found online at
https://www.ucmo.edu/uhc/insurance/international_students.cfm.
Immunization Policy
The UCM Board of Governors follows the recommendations of the United States Centers for Disease Control and the
Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Thus, the Board of Governors requires all students to: ▪ Present documentation showing immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella (commonly called the MMR shots). ▪ Demonstrate a negative history for active tuberculosis.
Mandatory Orientation - Immunization and Health Screening
To comply with these requirements, a mandatory immunization and health screening must be completed during International
Student Orientation. The UCM Health Center will review your immunization record and ask you to complete a tuberculosis
questionnaire. Please bring your immunization record with you to campus.
Testing for Tuberculosis (TB)
After a review of your health history, you may be required to have tuberculosis (TB) Test. The UCM Health Center
uses a tuberculosis testing procedure called the T-Spot test. This test requires a blood sample. The test is done only
if necessary after reviewing your health history. If your T-Spot test is positive, you will be required to obtain a chest
x-ray. The International Student Health Insurance Plan will pay for the cost of these test(s). TB tests or chest x-rays
from outside of the United States will not be accepted.
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
Students are required to provide proof they have received the two-dose immunization for measles, mumps, and
rubella (MMR). If you have not received the two-dose MMR or have only received one dose, you must have the
needed immunization administered at the UCM Health Center. The International Student Health Insurance Plan
will pay for the cost of the shot(s).
Meningococcal Vaccine
Students living in university housing are required to receive the meningococcal vaccine. If you plan to live in university
housing, you must submit documentation to the University Health Center proving you have received the meningococcal
vaccine after reaching 16 years of age. It is suggested that you receive the vaccine at least two weeks before your move-in
date. You should check with your physician for vaccine availability. The University Health Center will have the vaccine
available during the immunization screening. The International Student Health Insurance Plan will pay for the cost of this
vaccine. You will not be allowed to move into permanent university housing until you have completed this requirement.
Holds are placed on student accounts prohibiting them from enrolling and attending classes until the tuberculosis
screening and proof of two MMR shots are on file with the University Health Center.
If you have any questions about the International Student Health Insurance Plan or the immunization policy, please
contact the University Health Center at 660-543-4770 or at [email protected].

SAFETY TIPS
Safety on the Street • Never hitchhike. • Use caution when using an ATM. • If you are carrying a purse or bag, carry it close to your body. Carry no more money or credit cards than
necessary. • Ask the person driving you home to wait until you are inside. Do the same for other passengers.
Safety in a Car • When approaching a parked vehicle, be aware of suspicious activity or persons. • Always park in well-lit areas. • Have your keys ready when approaching your vehicle. • When operating your vehicle, keep the doors locked. • Place valuables in the trunk or out of sight. • When stopped at traffic lights or in traffic, allow space between you and the vehicle in front of

a printed map as a backup to your cell phone, online map, or GPS.
Safety in a Building • Avoid isolated corridors or hallways. • Be extra careful in stairwells and isolated restrooms. • Avoid entering an elevator which is occupied by only one other person who is a stranger. • In an elevator, stand near the controls and locate the emergency button. • If you are assaulted while in the elevator, hit the emergency button or alarm button, and press as many
