The“InternationalSummerSchoolonLowTemperature PlasmaPhysics:Basicsand Applications”wasfounded in1996andcontinues to this date with growing success.

Themain purpose of the Schoolis to give new graduate MSc /PhD students from allover the world asolidintroduction and aconcise overview of low-temperature plasma physics and toserve as aforum for coherent education inplasma science.Theschool has thus become agenuinepart of the curricula of manyof the participating universities.

Its “MasterClass“addresses each year new hot topics at thelevel of forefront research.

TheSchoolwasfirst organized by DanielC.Schramas aSocrates/ErasmusSchoolat Eindhovenfrom 1996-2000.

Many colleagues,experts intheir field,and alldedicated teachersfrom european universities volunteered as lecturers justforthe reimbursement of their travel expenses.

They set the standard for highquality education inplasma scienceinanopen,liberal,unbiased,communicative atmosphere,opento any student wherever heor she came from.This,and thenetworking among the young people made the school agreatsuccess.

Unfortunately the EUSocratesfinancing stopped afterfive years.Newways had to be found inorder to continue.Italked tothe Heraeus Foundation,convinced them,and together withMarcBöke we organized during 24.9.- 2.10.2001the

We were grateful to the Heraeus Foundation for financing theschool for three years.Thereafter we aquired money from theEUinthe FP6program for one year,allabit cumbersome.In2005allwasfinanced by RUB.

In2006we started the joint venture with TUEwhere responsibilityfor the scientific part and operation of the school changed betweenTUEand RUBannually.Keypersons were RichardEngelnandRichardvandeSandenat TUEand MarcBöke and myselfat RUB,who co-chaired the school.Financing wasshared,logisticsalways stayed at Bochum.

In2013,we decided to move to afull-internationalmanagerial format,including aresidentLocal OrganizingCommittee (LOC)as well as aLocal ScientificCommittee andanInternationalChairman(IC),the latter chosen every yearamong the experienced lecturers.TheICresponsibilitiesare mostly scientific,including the finaldesignof the School’sagenda (topics and lecturers)and the definition of the thematicsfor the MasterClasses.If possible,the ICshould alsobringsome financial support for the School’s edition he/she isresponsible for.
