MEANIN G OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS Term international was first used by

Jeremy Bentham in the later part of the 18th century with regard to the laws of nations.

MEANING OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS Domestic policies are constantly

affected by developments outside, nations are compelled to enter into dialogue with target or initiating entities or form alliances for the purpose of enhancing their status quo, or increasing their power or prestige and survival in the  international system.

DEFINITIONS Trevor Taylor (1979) defines International Relations

as 

"a discipline, which tries to explain political activities across state boundaries". 

According to Ola, Joseph (1999), 

"International relations are the study of all forms of interactionsthat exist between members of separate entities or nations within the international system".

VIEWS OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS TWO VIEW: narrow view & broad view Narrow view: the official relations conducted

by the authorised leaders of the state. Broad view: include apart from international

relations between states, all intercourse among states and all movements of people, goods and ideas across the national frontiers within its purview.

INTERNATIONAL RELATION AND INTERNATIONAL POLITICS It is states which make vital decisions

affecting peace and war and that is their governments which have the authority to regulate business, travel, commerce, use of resources, political ideas, territorial jurisdiction, nationality, communication, employment of armed force and other aspects of international affairs. The relationship between states is described as international politics that is the interaction of state policies.

relations. Study of military policy of countries. Study of international agencies.

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS Enables us to understand the basic

motives underlying the policies of various countries.

Helpful in bringing home the point that narrow the nationalism is the bane of humanity and poses a serious threat to world peace.

Acceptance to the principle of collective security.
