introduction
Middle East Northwest Graphic Dialogue, an International Print Project, is an ambitious
international original fine art Print Exhibition and Exchange. The International Print Projectbrings together works of 41 artists and printmakers from 13 Middle Eastern countries includ-ing: Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Syria, Iraq, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates,Kuwait, Qatar, Yemen and Egypt.
The exhibit was curated by Dr. Arafat Al-Niam and the American artist and printmaker BarbaraMason; the International Print Project will celebrate global culture and widen inter-culturaldialogue while demonstrating the richness of the printmaking medium.
The International Print Project is a collaboration between the Jordanian Applied Science Uni-versity Department of Fine Art and Print Arts Northwest in cooperation with Dr. Jean Campbell
of the Middle Eastern Studies Center of Portland State University. The project includes a primaryexhibition in Portland, Oregon of printmaking from a new generation of graphic artists from theMiddle East. In return, work from the professional artists of Print Arts Northwest will be exhib-ited in Jordan and other countries in the Middle East.
The exhibition consists of work from Dr. Al-Niams workshops of the last three years. It is orga-
nized to promote the art and practice of printmaking in the Middle East; these workshops arecritically acclaimed as the most important in the region. The selected works for this project offeran insight into the development of printmaking in both the Middle East and the United States. They present new ideas, approaches and a combination of techniques and showcase the artistsexploration of their medium. The presentation of new techniques and tendencies in printmakingcan foster cultural links between American and Middle Eastern Artists.

The opportunity to bring work from the Middle East to Portland manifested itself with an emailto a long time internet acquaintance, Dr. Arafat Al-Niam, originally from Amman, Jordan.Barbara Mason invited Dr. Al-Niam to send work to Portland from the Middle East and he wasvery excited to do so, seeing this opportunity as a cross-cultural artistic project for artists tounderstand each other more readily and appreciate the humanity in each other by the sharingof their work. This International Print Project is conceived as an ongoing exchange of work
between many countries and the United States with Dr. Al-Niam as the facilitator on the MiddleEastern end. Representing 13 countries and showing 43 pieces of work, this exhibition showsprints of artists fairly new to the medium and those who have been practicing the craft for a longtime.
