Your study options

Whether you want to get ahead in your career faster, or simply just improve your knowledge, a Monash postgraduate degree can give you a distinct advantage.

Professional entry master’s coursesSome postgraduate courses are specifically designed to prepare people who have completed an undergraduate degree to enter a regulated profession such as law, accounting or teaching. These courses can be two to four years depending on the discipline. While some of these professions can also be studied at undergraduate level, you might make the decision to enter the professional course after you have completed your first degree.

Expert master’s coursesThese courses allow you to either extend knowledge and expertise gained through your undergraduate degree or add breadth to your knowledge and skills within a new or complementary field.

If you complete a four-year bachelor’s degree, you can usually complete an expert master’s degree in the same discipline in only one year meaning you graduate with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in five years.

ResearchMonash offers research-based postgraduate courses in most disciplines.

These courses offer you the opportunity to pursue your passion in a supportive environment while working with some of the brightest minds. A postgraduate research degree can take between one and four years of full-time study.

Study modes

We understand that postgraduate student’s have many priorities and commitments. That’s why we offer flexible study modes to allow you to build your study around your life.

Most courses are offered in both full-time and part-time study modes. Some units are offered in intensive block mode (usually Thursday to Sunday) allowing you to arrange a short break from work to complete a unit. It’s what works best for you.

Off-campus (Distance learning)You don’t have to be at Monash to study with Monash. Through our online distance learning, you can study with Australia’s biggest and best-known university without ever having to set foot on campus. It’s the perfect option if you need to balance university with work, family and other personal commitments. You’ll study the same units and gain the same qualification as you would if you were on campus. It includes a combination of print study material and electronic communication.

Please note: Studying off-campus with Monash will not entitle you to apply for an Australian student visa.

Length of programs

Many of our master’s programs offer you block credit on the basis of your education background.

1 year programsif you wish to study a master’s in the same discipline for which you have a four-year honours qualification it usually takes one =year (48 credit points).

1.5 year programs if you wish to undertake a master’s program in the same discipline as your three-year undergraduate qualification it will usually be a 1.5 year program (72 credit points).

2 year programs if you wish to undertake a master’s program in a different discipline to your three-year undergraduate qualification it will usually take two years (96 credit points).

Brendan MurrayMaster of Education 2010

Brendan is the Executive Principal of Parkville College – a Victorian Government School established to provide quality education for all young people detained in custody.

Deeply embedded in his community, Brendan is also the co-founder and former principal of the Pavilion School – a Victorian Government school that seeks to provide the highest standard of public education for adolescents who are disengaged from education. He was awarded the Victorian Outstanding Secondary Teacher Award in 2009 as well as the inaugural Australian Federal Government Closing the Gap Award. Having completed his Master of Education in 2010, Brendan now intends to pursue a PhD.

Dr Michelle McIntoshBachelor of Pharmacy, 1997; PhD, 2000; Graduate Certificate in Higher Education, 2009

Michelle leads a team at Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences working on a project to develop an aerosol delivery system for oxytocin that can be inhaled by patients from

a simple, disposable device immediately after childbirth. Every year more than 100,000 women die of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), a condition of excessive blood loss after childbirth.

Although PPH can be effectively prevented or treated with an injection of oxytocin, access to this drug is limited due to the requirements for refrigeration, storage and trained medical personnel for administration.

Noel VillaromanDoctor of Laws, 2014

Dr Noel Villaroman was appointed at the United Nations (UN) Department of Political Affairs in April 2014. His work in the UN provides expert advice about the international legal protection of ethnic

and religious minorities to UN agencies, government institutions and academia across the Middle East.

Dr Villaroman also has a forthcoming book Treading on Sacred Grounds: Places of Worship, Local Planning and Religious Freedom in Australia based on his PhD thesis to be released in 2015.

Associate Professor Jie WangMaster of Music 2004

Jie is an Associate Professor in the Liberal Arts Department at Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. She has developed a

unique Chinese language, culture and music course that prepares students who are interested in exploring the huge music market in China. The course gives students basic language skills and knowledge of Chinese culture and music.

She has recently completed a dual master’s degree program in vocal performance and pedagogy in musical theatre at New York University (NYU). She is the first graduate student from the Chinese mainland to study this specific program at NYU.

Rameshwari RamachandraMBA 1993

Ramesh is recognised as one of Asia’s most influential women. As managing

director of Singapore-based consulting firm Business Breakthrough Technology Pty Ltd she manages the operations and expansion of consulting initiatives and blue-chip clientele in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines.

She also regularly consults and coaches senior executives and board members and provides customised coaching to family-owned businesses going through conflicts, succession and inheritance issues.

Prior to running Business Breakthrough Technology, Ms Ramachandra worked in the Asia Pacific, Australia and the US in the education, business consulting, information technology, shipping, garment and financial industries in the private and public sector.

Who was Sir John Monash?Sir John Monash was an Australian leader, statesman and nation-builder that contributed to almost every level of Australian life.

As well as a long and distinguished military career, Sir John was a renowned engineer and public administrator. He also features on the Australian $100 note.

He was a man who used education to turn his natural talent into ability, allowing him to realise his ambitions. Not only do we carry Sir John’s name, we also take inspiration from his philosophy of life.

Although Monash University is named after an individual, the University is a public government-funded and accredited institution.

Our research tradition Even before we became the global university we are today, our researchers looked beyond traditional boundaries, creating new frontiers and discovering new ways of approaching the fields in which they worked. It’s why a Monash education is respected around the world. Things that we now take for granted would not exist without the initial work of Monash researchers:

First in-vitro fertilisation pregnancyProfessors Alan Trounson and Carl Wood achieved the world’s first IVF pregnancy in 1973. The Trounson and Wood team went on to achieve Australia’s first (and the world’s fourth) successful IVF birth in 1980.

Fighting influenzaIn 1986, a team from our Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (formerly the Victorian College of Pharmacy) designed and synthesised the anti-flu drug, Relenza. Relenza first became available in Australia in 1999 and is now used globally.

Nobel Peace PrizeIn 2007, eight scientists from Monash University shared in the prestige of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, awarded jointly to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and former US Vice-President Al Gore.

Building stronger, lighter planesProfessor Xinhua Wu and her team at the Monash Centre for Additive Manufacturing (MCAM) are creating a new aluminium alloy that will make aircraft 30 to 40 per cent lighter, twice as fuel efficient and still structurally sound. So significant is this project that they are working in close partnership with Microturbo, the European Space Agency and Bombardier.

Helping the blind to seeThe Monash Vision Group (MVG), draws on the capabilities of Monash University, The Alfred hospital, and industry partners MiniFAB and Grey Innovation to develop bionic eye technology which connects to the primary visual cortex.

This means that patients unable to make use of current retinal implants because of damaged optic nerves or physical trauma to the actual eyes may now have the opportunity to see again.

Super sandMonash has teamed up with Rice University (USA) to create a ‘super sand’ which acts as an inexpensive filtration device in third-world countries. They have significantly enhanced the natural filtering properties of sand by coating it with a nanomaterial called graphite oxide (GO). Lack of clean drinking water is the cause of over 2.5 million deaths per year according to the WHO.

Eliminating diseaseThe Eliminate Dengue Program, led by Monash University’s Professor Scott O’Neill, uses a naturally occurring bacteria (Wolbachia) to reduce the ability of mosquitoes to pass dengue between people. Dengue fever affects an estimated 390 million people worldwide annually and is ranked by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the most important mosquito-borne viral disease in the world.

Campuses and locations

All times and distances are approximate and use the most direct driving route from the Melbourne CBD.

Monash University has five Australian campuses as well as the Monash Law Chambers in Melbourne’s CBD. We also have a campus in Malaysia, a Joint Graduate School in China, a learning centre in Prato, Italy, and a research centre in Mumbai, India. Monash University awards are delivered at other locations, including at Monash South Africa.

Parkville PA

Drive time: 3 km, approx. 10 minutesLocated three kilometres north of Melbourne’s city centre, the Parkville campus houses about 2000 students from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, with first-class teaching facilities, innovative learning spaces and research laboratories. The campus is home to the Centre for Medication Use and Safety and the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which comprises the largest and most experienced group of pharmaceutical scientists in Australia.

Caulfield CA

Drive time: 9 km, approx. 20 minutesCaulfield is the second-largest Monash campus, with about 14,000 students. It’s the main centre for the faculties of Business and Economics and Art Design and Architecture. Caulfield is nine kilometres from the Melbourne city centre and adjacent to Caulfield train station. The campus has a gym, library and cafes, and is close to several shopping precincts.

Clayton CL

Drive time: 20 km, approx. 25 minutesClayton is the largest of Monash’s campuses, with about 28,000 students enrolled. It combines a vibrant research, technology and manufacturing precinct with first-rate sporting facilities, shops, a student centre, libraries, a post office, banks, medical services and religious centres. The campus can be reached by public transport utilising an extensive bus network combined with train stations in surrounding suburbs.

Melbourne CBD CI

All postgraduate law courses are taught at the Monash Law Chambers located at the heart of the city’s legal precinct at 555 Lonsdale Street within walking distance of the Magistrates’, County and Supreme courts. The Law Chambers provides independent study areas and amenities conducive to creative and independent learning.

Berwick BE

Drive time: 40 km, approx. 40 minutesBerwick is a small, friendly campus with about 2000 students approximately 40 minutes south east of Melbourne. It’s a five-minute walk from the heart of Berwick’s specialty shops, cafes and business services. Berwick campus offers courses in business, education and nursing.

Peninsula PE

Drive time: 40 km, approx. 40 minutesThe Peninsula campus has about 4000 enrolled students. Situated about 40 minutes south of Melbourne, it is a centre for training health professionals and health and physical-education practitioners. It is also being developed as a centre for health-science research. There is a bus connection to Frankston train station, and a free shuttle-bus runs between Peninsula and Clayton campuses.

Monash shuttle-busDuring the academic year, a free Monash shuttle-bus service runs in both directions from:

Alex Martinis RoeBachelor of Fine Art Doctor of Philosophy

An international perspective and a strong focus on art theory and research have driven Alex Martinis Roe’s success since she completed her Doctor of Philosophy at Monash University with the Silver Jubilee Scholarship in 2010. Alex was further awarded a 2013 Anne and Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship, enabling her to undertake post-doctoral research overseas.

Alex first came to Monash as a Bachelor of Fine Art student, where she began to create intellectually engaging works that demanded careful consideration and often engagement from her audience.

“The work I made for my solo exhibition in Dublin in 2011 was a real turning point for me. I managed, for the first time, to bring other people’s voices into an exhibition of mine, in a way that I felt I was happy with, in terms of its politics.”

Through solo exhibitions in Europe, Korea and Australia, Alex is now making a name for herself in international contemporary art. Her current projects focus on feminist genealogies and seek to foster specific and productive relations between different generations, as a way of participating in the construction of feminist histories and futures.

“Motivated by an intense interest in the quality and affect of relations between people and texts, I work as an artist in order to practice a politics of sexual difference,” Alex said.

“This is a positive practice that affirms its genealogy within the history of feminist art practice and then sometimes ruptures it toward a future symbolization of difference.”

The Master of Biomedical Science Preliminary (MBiomedSci) is designed for students interested in undertaking postgraduate research in biomedical sciences. A candidate is required to carry out a prescribed program of research for a specified period under the direct supervision of a member of the academic staff. The supervisor, in consultation with the candidate, is responsible for developing the research program to be followed by the candidate, and for reporting at regular intervals on the candidates progress.

The masters (part 1) is designed for students who do not have the equivalent of a class 1 or class 2A honours degree in a relevant discipline. For graduates with only a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and who have not attempted honours in that field, admission to MBiomedSci preliminary will normally require at least a credit grade average in 24 points of relevant third-year units, or appropriate additional training and experience. International candidates must complete the MBiomedSci preliminary program and obtain results equivalent to class 2A honours (H2A) or better for admission into MBiomedSci. The MBiomedSci preliminary is not an awardable degree. Candidates should complete their program of study within 12 months full-time. Students who pass MBiomedSci preliminary but who do not wish to continue, or do not achieve class 2A honours or above, will be offered the exit award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Sciences.

Candidates will be required to undertake a major research thesis of 75% of the entire course. The thesis should embody the results of the candidates investigation, which demonstrates independence of thought and the candidates ability to carry out research in that discipline. The remaining 25% of the course will comprise coursework such as a literature review and/or statistics classes, and is specified by the enrolling department).

When should I apply?Apply as early as possible. Some courses have application closing dates two to four months prior to the start of the course, while others have quotas. Aim to have your application received by Central Admissions at least two to four months prior to the course start date. This allows time for your application to be processed and can help to ensure that you secure a place if your preferred course has limited places. Applying early also gives you time to get your student visas, which can take up to six months for some nationalities and countries.

To submit a hard copy application to Monash University Australia, complete the International Application Form located at the back of this guide, ensuring that all sections are completed and the declaration is signed and dated before you send the application.

Step 2: Your application is assessedWhen your application is received, Monash University will assess your application according to university entry requirements. To comply with Australian law your application will be assessed to check that you are genuinely seeking temporary entry to Australia to study. If your application is successful, you will receive an offer in the form of an International Student Course Agreement (ISCA). This will be emailed to you and your Monash registered agent (if you have one). Instructions will be supplied on how to accept your offer, including the fees and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) you need to pay.

If we are not able to make you a full offer immediately, you may receive a conditional offer. A conditional offer means you must submit more information and meet the requirements specified in the ISCA. Usually, the information we need is documentation (for example official final transcript, graduation certificate or an English proficiency test) to see if you meet the specific entry requirements for the course you have applied for.

We will explain what is needed in the ISCA. Please submit the documentation to us as soon as possible or contact us if you need any help. If you are not successful for your first preference your application will be considered for your next preference.

Step 3: Accept your offerTo accept your offer, follow the instructions in your ISCA. You must complete, sign and return Part B of your ISCA along with payment and a photocopy of the personal details page of your passport before the offer lapse date.

Your payment should include OSHC for the duration of your visa for yourself and any family members accompanying you to Australia.

When making payment it should be noted that:

Step 7: Enrolment and orientationOnce you have accepted and paid for your offer, Sales Management will email you an official Authority to Enrol letter 2 to 3 weeks prior to your enrolment date. The Authority to Enrol lists enrolment tasks that you must complete prior to enrolment.

Enrolment is the main step in starting your Monash studies. At enrolment you can meet a faculty course adviser, ask questions and discuss your unit selection and course structure. Enrolment takes place two weeks prior to the start of teaching, and students must arrive at the university in time for enrolment. Some courses do not accept late enrolments after the designated enrolment date.

Step 4: Your application is assessedOnce you have submitted your application it will be assessed and approved by the Monash University Institute of Graduate Research, the faculty and academic unit at which you will be enrolled. The duration of this process can vary but should take no longer than six weeks. If your application is successful, you will be sent an offer pack including:

Step 5: Accept your offerRead your offer letter and offer pack carefully to know how to accept your offer and enrol in your course. International students need to pay their Overseas Student Health Cover and a course-fee deposit before we provide an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE), which you need for your student visa application.

Step 6: Arrange a Student VisaMonash University partners with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) in the Streamlined Visa Processing (SVP) arrangements. If you are eligible for SVP then your visa application will be assessed as if you are an Assessment Level 1 (AL1) student.
