PERSPECTIVE@JUERGEN_MUENCH
CLOUD SOFTWARE SYMPOSIUM, HELSINKI, 13.12.2013
IS FINLAND COMPETITIVE ENOUGH
IN THE CLOUD?
1. Cloud-based global software delivery allows for …shorter cycles from ideas to profit
2. Cloud-based platforms and ecosystems allow for …distributed collaborative development
3. Scalable cloud infrastructure allows for …new players and new solutions entering focal position
Who can benefit from this?
CLOUD OPPORTUNITIES
1. Cloud-based global software delivery allows for …shorter cycles from ideas to profit
1. Cloud-based global software delivery allows for …shorter cycles from ideas to profit
Consequences:•Applications need to be production-ready throughout the lifecycle •No more time to waste•Build the right software, understand value and focus on value•Be able to react to changes quickly •Learn and fail fast
• Leadership• Culture• People• Process changes• Quality of releases
MAIN OBSTACLES
• Processes (lean, agile, global)• Organization (teams, interfaces, …)• Personnel (new roles)• Strategy (value-oriented)• Marketing (experimentation-oriented)• …

MATURATION PATH
R&D as an innovation system
• Align software development with business goals • Run small and frequent experiments• Processes accommodate experimentation
Iterative delivery in distributed multi-site setting
• Scalable agile, lean, and distributed processes(however, often WaterSCRUMfall)
Traditional software development model
• Waterfall

GLOBAL REVENUES

CLOUD OPPORTUNITIES

CLOUD OPPORTUNITIES
• Finnish cloud service market: 140 million euros in 2012• Yearly growth 40 % • New software business will come mainly from the SaaS• Significant part of the Finnish companies have not understood
the magnitude and speed of the changes ahead• Risk that global companies will capture at least part of the
market • Public body may serve as a pioneer and supporting the transfer
of public services to the cloud
FINNISH SITUATION
CLUSTERS
• Finland• flat hierarchy, less fear of failure and less bureaucracy as key
factors• government financial support for entrepreneurs is “quite nice”
in Finland• competent developers available, good infrastructure• scene is still young and needs “more growth and
entrepreneurial skills”• many success stories (e.g., game industry)• Germany:• more of a hierarchical approach • first thing is need to minimise bureaucracy• Planned: Simplified processes
STARTUPS
• Cloud adoption is necessary and increasing• Undestanding the speed and magnitude of cloud impact is
essential• Further actions to develop new capabilities are needed• Finland is ahead with respect to research programs• Companies involved in the Cloud Software Program are well
prepared• Others can learn from Cloud Software results or catch up in N4S
