• selection committee of the consortium is responsable for the selection

Central bilateral agreements
Priority agreements with partner institutions in Europe, North America, Asia and South Africa with a fixed
number of exchanges/year.
Eligibility
criteria
• PhD students with at least 2 years of research experience at their home university
• postdoctoral researchers
• ZAP
Selection
criteria
KU Leuven selection committee:
• applicants whose projects demonstrate the greatest potential for ongoing research and collaboration
with KU Leuven faculty members.
• project proposals that cannot receive any funding through other programmes (National Research
Council, European programmes, Research Funding...).
Duration: min. 3 weeks and max. 3 months Budget:
KU Leuven participants: travelling expenses:
• to EU destination: max € 500 (economy class)
• to non-EU destination: max € 1,000 (economy class)
Participants from partner universities coming to KU Leuven:
• per diem: € 50/day in the first month and € 30/day from the
second month onwards
• accommodation

Prospecting Grants– IRO
Travel grants for a prospective trip to a developing country in order to submit a project
proposal at a funding agency
Eligibility
criteria
• Senior academic KU Leuven staff members (ZAP) or postdoctoral
researchers, supervised by a senior academic staff member
• Travelling to LDC, LIC or LMIC
• A prospective trip has to result in a completed project proposal that can be
submitted to other funding institutions
Selection
criteria
• Development relevance of the proposal
• Cooperation with local institution
Duration: / Budget: Travel related expenses up to 2,000 EUR

Mobility within Erasmus+ framework

student exchange before, you can do this as doctoral

JUMO mobility grants for junior researchers
• Duration:
o 6 months – 1 year for post-docs, tenure track professors
o 3 – 6 months for doctoral students
• Reimbursements:
o Daily allowance depending on the country but with a
maximum of €1.000 per month (€1.500 for families)
o Travel expenses up to €650 within Europe and €1.000
outside Europe

Faculty of Social Sciences
Bilateral agreements outside EU
The Faculty of Social Sciences has concluded bilateral
agreements with a list of partners outside of the EU. All of
these agreements actively want to promote staff mobility.
There are no mobility grants foreseen in these agreements,
but host institutions can provide (very affordable or free) on
campus accommodation in most cases, and there are some
funding possibilities:
• some of the partners are also partners in Erasmus Mundus Action2
Consortia eg. IDC Herzliya (Israel)
• some partners are also partners of KU Leuven at the central level
eg University of Illinois, Shanghai Jiao Tong University

• Marie Curie International Mobility Scheme with 7 Russian
partners: staff mobility possibilities on research topics of
European cultural diversity, identity and conflict
management: starting academic year 2014-2015, minimum
stay: 1 month

• As a PhD student, your mobility plans need to be discussed in the first
place with your supervisor.
