Foreign language skills and experience of international business culture are as essential for successful professionals as economic expertise. In a carefully developed curriculum, IMML has been preparing students for the international business market for 20 years. Its aim is to develop managers of the future and to prepare them for careers in a global economic environment.

The high quality of courses, the rigorous entry requirements and our successful research profile have created a reputation for quality and excellence. Specially designed seminars combine management and language, focusing on the French, German, Spanish or Latin American business environments. Half of the modules are taught in the relevant language so that students gain a high level of linguistic competence.

The Year AbroadThe theoretical foundations laid during the first two years of study are extended by a year abroad.

Company experiences

Once companies experience the advantages of having an IMML student on placement, they usually continue working with us. For example, Barclays and Alstom France have offered new placements to our students since 1990.

We have had IMML students from the University of Bath on placements for years and value them as a true asset to our company. We can whole-heartedly recommend the partnership with Bath.Manager,Rohde&Schwarz,Munich

During his year with Barclays, David undertook a high volume of work equivalent to that allocated to a permanent employee. He integrated well into the Team and his attention to detail and the standard he accomplished enabled him to quickly gain his colleagues’ confidence. He was pro-active, frequently demonstrating initiative in day-to-day projects without supervison. Head of Analyst Team, Barclays Bank, Paris, France

Beth has excellent personal and professional qualities. She is competent at resolving problems and taking decisions. She has adapted to every new situation quickly and efficiently and has exceeded our expectations in all areas of work.Manager, Catenon, Madrid

Frances has been an excellent placement student. She assumed the role of two placement students when her colleague left. She worked very independently and took on the responsibility for leading several projects, one of which won an award. Head of Communications & Team Development Strategy, BNP PARIBAS, Paris

The placement – advantages for the student

The experience of living and working in another country is an essential component for today’s multi-lingual students. To integrate and prove themselves in a foreign work environment equips them further for an international career.

Placement students apply and build on the theoretical knowledge gained in the first two years of study by:

1 developing their personal skills in: • Communication(verbal/

written) • Organisationandplanning • Problem-solvingandanalysis • Teamworkandresponseto

leadership • Creativityandinitiative • Decision-making

2 developing their business skills in: • ITsystems • Presentation • Businesscorrespondence • Projectmanagement

3 developing their language skills through in-depth personal experience of the culture of the country

Without a placement, I don’t think I would have received a job offer. The fact that I undertook a business placement in a foreign country and language impressed the managers at interview.Natalie Martyn, IMML graduate

The placement was a great experience and I would not have done anything differently. The projects were interesting and demanding, taking me out of my comfort zone.Workingattesaencouraged me to explore marketing as a future career choice.Lena Chudasama, tesa, Hamburg

At KPMG I built on my base of accounting knowledge and increased my awareness of business ethics, as most information within audit is of a sensitive nature. My attention to detail and my capacity to work on multiple projects simultaneously were greatly enhanced. The year abroad is a distinctive element of myCVnow, andmycompetency in French is regularly commented on in business and day-to- day context.Laura Sissons, IMML French

The saying “work hard, play hard” is very applicable to this placement. If you put a lot of effort and dedication into the job, you will be rewarded. I achieved things that I had not thought would be possible, which gave me a great sense of satisfaction. This placement taught me about the importance of developing good communication skills and networking. I was invited to meetings with the CPOandBritishassociateswithwhomIwillbeincontactaftergraduation. I learnt a lot from my supervisor and other senior staff.
