IN THIS ISSUE...
It’s hard to believe that we are already three monthpast our Congress in Paris. The Summer breakgave way to a busy exhibition season with businessimproving everywhere. It’s hard to believe that we are already threemonth past our Congress in Paris. TheSummer break gave way to a busy exhibitionseason with business improving everywhere.
At this time of the year many of you aretasked to draw up budgets and to plan theexhibition year 2011. To determine theresources you will need to meet thechallenges in the near future, it will beimportant to understand trends anddevelopments in the exhibition industry in theshort and long term. A possible source ofinformation is fortune-telling, though may Isuggest a more business focused strategy. The “Global Exhibition Barometer” isavailable at www.ufi.org and is acomprehensive report that provides insightinformation on the impact of the economiccrisis on our industry. The UFI opinion pollwas answered by 175 companies from 50countries.
The same positive outlook that UFIMembers expressed is what I get when I lookback at the Congress and the results thatwere produced for IELA. A lot of work hadgone into the preparation of the GeneralAssembly and subsequently all issues on theagenda were dealt with efficiently. As usual, the Congress provided plenty of networkingopportunities which could be seized byconducting informal and casual meetings, orin a structured format during the one-on-onemeetings. There was serious and determinedparticipation in the breakout sessions and thiselement of our Congress is proving more andmore successful. My special thanks go to BobMoore and Anna Guichard, as well as to ourlocal hosts, Clamageran Foirexpo and E.S.I.Expo Services International, to create fourmemorable days for us in Paris. Nothing inthis world is perfect – and the feedbackquestionnaire answered by the participants inthe Congress is of great help to point out theareas where IELA Membership suggestschanges or improvements.
IELA Members are the most sophisticatedproviders of exhibition freight logistics in theworld. It’s a natural conclusion, that theleaders of IELA Member Companies are themost skilful, experienced and qualifiedexhibition logistic experts around. Thisbecame clear to me, again in Paris, when I
listened to the contributions that were madeduring the various discussions that tookplace. IELA needs this talent and leadershipto be made available to the Association. Many of you joined one of the WorkingGroups, and you are very active in taking partin the work during the year and at thesessions during our Congress. At this time Iwould like to encourage anybody who is notyet a member of a Working Group to join andto take part in the group’s activities. It is avery important process for IELA, that fromthe Working Groups we have individualsemerging as Working Group Vice Chairpersonor as Working Group Chairperson. Eventually, these leaders should become acknowledgedby membership as future Members of theBoard of Management. The future of ourassociation depends on volunteer work ofmembers that assume responsibility and whowill proceed to be future leaders of theAssociation. Every new Chairperson, everynew Member of the Board of Management, will influence the activities of IELA. They willplay an important role in decision making, andcan introduce her or his ideas, and beliefs, into the Association, and can truly play a partin shaping our industry. If you got animpression that I would like you to become anactive member in IELA, one way or another, then I made myself understood.

The company built its first greenTerminal in Australia in 2009 which isregistered for a Green Star - OfficeInteriors V1.1 rating and aiming for a4-star Green Star rating by the GreenBuilding Council of Australia.
The facility has a strongenvironmental focus based on theusage of solar energy for waterheating and rainwater for irrigation aswell as fire protection. Another important factor inreducing CO-2 emissions is the
optimisation of intermodal transportsolutions in the supply chain. Wherepossible DB Schenker utilizes railfreight instead of road transport toand the product DBSCHENKERskybridge which cleverlycombines air and ocean freight onroutes from Europe and the USA toAustralia can also reduce CO-2emissions compared to pure airfreight.

“CATS & CUSTOMS”
We would like to tell you astory that you may think is,precisely, just a story but - ohboy - I can guarantee you this isno ordinary story.
This is the story of threepallets that started in anexhibition in Deauville, France, moved on to another one inParis and finally landed in theEGAST 2010 in Strasbourg afteran odyssey worth of any well-known fiction writer.
The Exhibitions Dept ofTransnatur Barcelona, incollaboration with our agent inFrance, ESI (Expo ServiceInternational) were to deliverthree pallets that were comingfrom the Fair in Paris to the onein Strasbourg for our clientSOSA INGREDIENTS. TheEGAST Fair was due to beginon 14 March Sunday, so thegoods were to be delivered on12 March Friday.
Our client, already inStrasbourg, who was recoveringfrom a surgical operation onlythe week before, phoned Axel
Leuret and Albert Marcos(Exhibition Dept at Transnatur)on Saturday morning to say thatthe merchandise was nowhereto be seen.
Axel, Albert and Elisabeth, once recovered from the initialshock, set themselves off to afrantic work in order to find outwhere the three pallets mighthave gone. Mr EmmanuelPitchelu, General Manager ofESI, offered to cooperatepersonally in this impossiblemission to find the lostmerchandise. First attempt wasobviously to phone thetransport companysubcontracted by ESI to deliverthe merchandise, but don’tforget that it was Saturday, thatthe company was closed, andmobile phones were notreachable either.
Axel and Albert startedGoogling like mad in order tofind any connection that maylead them to someone at thislocal transport company inFrance… and FACEBOOK came
to life! A list of eighteen or sonames was displayed belongingto an association of old driverswhose connection was thetransport company in question.Mr Pitchelu asked FranceTelecom to provide all thephone numbers for thesepeople, whom he set to phoneone by one in the hope thatone of them might know howto get in touch with thecompany. Around 5pm, hefinally succeeded in talking to aretired driver who happens toknow the name of the securityguard of the warehouse usedby the transport company. You’ll be relieved to know thatwe were now only a few phonecalls away from gettingsomeone to open thewarehouse for us on a Saturdayevening.
The guard leaded us to theManager of the warehouse whothen told us that the goodswere certainly in thewarehouse; they were neverdelivered to the stand because
when the driver arrived at theExhibition venue and saw thelong queue of trucks waiting tobe appointed a bay todownload, he decided of hisown accord to u-turn anddeliver on...Monday,completely unaware of theimportance of delivering for theday he had been instructed todo so.
Shakespeare said it himselfmuch before us: ‘All’s well thatends well…’ And so at 8pm thewarehouse was finally openedfor us to access themerchandise and organise anexpress transport that woulddeliver the merchandise safeand sound to our client’s standat 11 o’clock at night thatSaturday.
On Sunday morning, both theclient and the stand were readyto greet visitors, the lattertotally unaware of the ordealbehind it all.
Angels Ariño Cussa ofTransnatur, S.A., Spain
‘’I am very fond of cats. We haveone and have had others overthe years.
But, unfortunately due tothem we had a very badexperience with one of ourshipments to the Netherlands inthe 90's.
We had a quite large shipmentconsolidated into a 40ft oceancontainer with, among otherthings, a shipment of cat food!Of course the cat food was not atime sensitive shipment but ourtrade show shipment was verymuch time sensitive. The cat foodwas NOT our cargo by the way,the consolidator company mixedvarious goods together and wewere not even aware of it.
In any case, the entireshipment was held in Rotterdam
over the week-end because ofthis mixture of a consolidationand 'faulty paperwork'. Ourtrade fair shipment wasimpounded because of cat food.Netherlands customs had tohave a veterinarian come to theport on Monday (the day beforethe fair) and check out if thisfoodshipment was OK; this foodshipment that tied everythingelse in the container!
It worked out but our tradefair shipment was a day late tothe fair------the clients were quiteupset. I told them that, believe itor not, ultimately cats were theproblem---believe it or not. Eventhough he was upset that hisshipment was a day late; hesmiled and said that he hadTHREE cats at home.
What a great, unbelievablebut true excuse to satisfy aclient!
Now everytime we feed ourcat; cat food=customs problems!
If there is a lesson to belearned: how do we watch forthat and prohibit that procedureand potential problem with theocean consolidators?’’John Harrison of UniGroupWorldwide, Inc., U.S.A.

“It was a constructive meeting again. Thank you! “THOMAS LUECHINGER, AGILITY FAIRS & EVENTS, SWITZERLAND
IELA’s Silver Anniversary was certainlycelebrated in style and what a spectacularcity to celebrate it in. We worked hard andwe played hard, but still met our objectiveof getting “Back to Basics” – networking, meeting friends and writing business!
The one objective set up for the 25th IELACongress was, for sure, reached: GOINGBACK TO BASICS. The application of ourmantra was done from the start. Two BoardMembers were responsible for welcomingand guiding new IELA members and firstcomers to the Congress in order to“transmit” the authenticity and value ofIELA.
Sharp business was achieved at the 1-2-1Networking Session while core subjects werediscussed during the Breakout Sessions:How does IELA interface as an organisationwith organiser groups? Is there a role for aco-ordinated approach to IT systems by
IELA? What does the IELA future hold? Whatdo people want? Who should join IELA?Why don’t we share customs information? Isthis beneficial to members? How do wemake this work?
The outcome was that focus should begiven to sharing expertise and experiencee.g. customs; that networking andcommunication were key among allmembers and also with other organisationswithin the industry such as SISO, UFI, AFECAamong others. Tools such as Facebook andVideo Conference could be used to enhancecommunication. A conclusion was that theIELA spirit needs to stayintact by focusing onhigh standards as wellas quality.
A day out in thecountryside...in themiddle of Paris! The
Pavillons de Bercy welcomed the group in an“enchanted and playful environment”. Theweather helping, lunch under the chestnutswas perfect for some relaxing and fruitfulnetworking ... until some delegatesshortened the day to go and watch thefootball!
Did the World Cup create unificationbetween the different nationalities that day,or was it just that our aim to GO BACK TOBASICS was reached?!

Dear all, this is my firstreport since taking over asChairman of MembershipWorking Group from Mr. AlanHunter.
I would like to place on recordmy sincere acknowledgement forefforts made by Alan during hisshort period as Chairman of thisGroup in presenting to the Boardof Management the views of theGroup. Unfortunately healthreasons forced me out ofattending the 25th Silver JubileeCongress in Paris and I lost anopportunity to interact withmembers of this Grouppersonally. I am grateful toFeyzan and Markus who took theinitiative to continue the activitiesof this Group in my absence. Iwould also like to thank theactive support from all membersof the Group for their discussionson new applications receivedduring this period.
Two new members joined IELArecently: BTG InternationalFreight Forwarders (Beijing) Co.Ltd, China and Blue Line Co. Ltd,Japan. An application is at themoment under considerationwith the Board of Management.
Ms Anna Guichard, IELA’sBusiness Development Managerhas been active in responding toenquiries from various newaspirants to become members ofIELA. She had been methodicallyscrutinising all the enquiriesbefore sending the paper work.Of the 14 aspirants who wishedto join IELA in the past sixmonths, 9 did not fulfil thecriteria and application formshave been sent to 5 companiesand their response is awaited.
There has been stress onlocating new membersparticularly in white spot areas.Any suggestion or informationabout companies willing to joinIELA particularly in White Spotareas from all the members arewelcome.
There has been unanimityamongst the Working Group thatwhile we need to expand thenumber of members as it hasbeen discussed from time totime, it should not compromisethe QUALITY of the membership.
I would once again like tothank all members of thisWorking Group who carried onthe activities of this Group during
the period I could not attend toany work and look forward totheir support and activeparticipation in guiding thisGroup to achieve the goals setfor IELA.

Dear friends,It is good to be back in the
forefront after some years. My first comments go to John
Harrison. John has put his'mission is recognition' slogan infull play. He has been workingwith full vigour and able toactivate a lot of us for ourcommon cause Congratulations,John. I am sure you will nowsupport me to take the WG tothe next level.
Which brings us to thequestion - what is the nextlevel? At Paris, we concludedthe next level would be to getto the second level. So, mymission is going to be preciselythat - recognition in the secondlevel of the organizers world -the managers who matter.
Having just taken over a weekago, I am drawing up a strategyon how to achieve this mission.Once approved by the Board, Iwill come back to you. Onething is for sure - I would expecta wide range of support, geographically, and not just limitthis mission to a few.
Lastly, for our Chairman, aword of gratitude on how youare taking IELA out of thewoods. Full credit to yourleadership in getting us back ontrack. Well done, Achim ! A lotstill needs to be done, for whichyou will always have my support.

Paris 2010 – a great event!
…..and certainly one thatcreated very heated discussionsamongst the “Standards WorkingGroup”…..
The last few months have beenfilled with a lot ofcorrespondence and exchangingof ideas amongst the WorkingGroup members.
It all started with questionssuch as
■ “Surveys – are they worth it?”or
■ “Awards – are they fair? and
■ “How about quality?”
Surely most of you, themembers, also have theiropinions on those topics, and likein our group, those opinionscould differ quite significantly.
The results of many hours ofinteraction cover the followingtopics:
■ Surveys
■ Analysis of Surveys
■ Awards
■ Panel of TrustedIndividuals/Neutral Authority
■ Underperformers
■ Quality System
■ Feedback
Let’s look at those in a bitmore detail…….
The group has come to theconclusion that the Surveys aredefinitely worth their while andare appreciated amongst themembers. Yet, the way theSurveys are done, and thequestions asked, don’t getapproval from everyone. Therefore, we will need to lookat ideas on how to improve onthose levels. Overall though, theprinciple of having Surveys hasbeen agreed to.
The Analysis of Surveys wasanother “hot topic”. The groupas a whole was not satisfied withthe limited information that is
currently available through theAnalysis, and we all believe thereis more that the data can give us.A request has been given to theBoard and it was put forwardthat it has to be a “neutralauthority” that will conduct therelevant research.
Changing from “hot” to“fiery” – we got to the issue ofthe Awards!
There were clearly dividedopinions amongst our group, some wanting the Awards tostay, some wanting the Awardsto go, some wanting the Awardsto change. Fact of the matter is –the Awards as they are today arenot ideal. We are discussing theoptions of having the Awardscompletely separate to theSurveys, the possibility of ratherhaving an “Agent of the YearAward” and also handing out theAwards at the General Assemblyrather than the Gala Dinner. There is more detail to all thedifferent options and this veryexplosive topic will be part of theBOM talks in Korea this year.
The “Panel of TrustedIndividuals/Neutral Authority” isa headline that came out of theneeds for a proper Analysis and apotentially changed view onAwards. The Working Group hasalready made relevantsuggestions to the Board andagain, these are under discussionduring the BOM in Korea.
Then a very delicate yetimportant matter -underperformers. To clarify, whentalking about“underperformers”, this does notrefer to anyone under theaverage score in general. It doesrelate to companies that are on aseriously low score. We are sureyou all agree – IELA has to beabout quality after all, and ifmembers continuously show
extremely low scores, we needaction. Maybe those companiesneed advice?
This thought process thenleads to another very importantword – quality.
Many companies have qualitysystems in place, other ones maynot be that far yet. That’s whereIELA can help, and at the sametime, being an IELA member willalso mean being a quality agent.Discussions are currently takingplace with ideas such as “qualitycertificates”, also “periodicalchecks”, and looking at a qualitysystem (a simple system – not ascomplex as ISO).
Last but not least, the issue offeedback.
Feedback from members isvery important, and over thenext few months you willsee/hear more from our groupwhere we will ask you forfeedback on certain topics.
Of course, as always, if youhave any feedback right now, letus know. We are always open tonew ideas, suggestions, improvements and more.
Stay tuned – there is more tocome!Sabine Schlosser
MANY COMPANIESHAVE QUALITYSYSTEMS IN PLACE,OTHER ONES MAYNOT BE THAT FARYET. THAT’S WHEREIELA CAN HELP, ANDAT THE SAME TIME,BEING AN IELAMEMBER WILL ALSOMEAN BEING AQUALITY AGENT.

Dear IELA Members,
We are pleased to be with youagain after 3 months over theParis Congress, with fresh ideasand tasks.
In this edition, we would alsolike to give you a briefinformation about what you canfind on the IELA Web siterelated to customs.
NOTICE OF A CHANGE : MrRoland TSE of Baltrans Shanghairecently left his job at hiscompany and Ms Tankie YIM willbe with us from now on,representing Baltrans Shanghai.Welcome Tankie, hope you willenjoy being a part of this group☺
CUSTOMS WORKING GROUPMEETING / ACTION PLAN –2010-2011:1. The group members agree onrenaming Customs Forms asCustoms Guidelines. TheGuidelines will be up-dated asusual untill the end of November2010 with joint efforts of allmembers. An announcementabout the process will be sentout to membership by Tijen Ozer.
2. We were discussing if weshould send a monthly report toall members about Customs W.G.activities. In reference to variouscomments by W.G. members, amonthly notice to membershipabout our activities seems to bequite challenging and not a veryeasy task to meet. We all agreethat IELA Report is the bestplatform to inform all membersabout what is happening and wewill keep it as it is.
3. Sharing information amongmembers: Based on ourdiscussions since Paris Congress,we are all willing toshare/exchange information andexperience with membership, through IELA Report. We allagree that some interesting /funny stories from members
about customs can bepublished in the IELA Report (aswell as OPS Club; as suggestedby Rachid Bensaber) so that wecan all widen our vision. Sharingexperince is essential in ourbusiness. In that respect, allmembers will receive a noticefrom Customs Working Group, for each IELA Report so that theycan post their stories withsupporting pictures to bepublished. For each Report, wewil be able to publish 1 or max 2stories; therefore the mostinteresting one will be chosen byCustoms W.G. Members byvoting.
4. Announcements aboutcustoms on the IELA Report :Considering that there may besome important announcementsby members about their localcustoms procedures, we will sendout notices to all members foreach IELA Report, so that theirimportant announcements can bepublished for the use of entiremembership. This will avoid last-minute surprises in the customsand will be a very nice tool foroperations people (why not topublish it at OPS Club web site aswell?)
5. How do we get integratedwith local customs in eachcountry ? This topic is a veryinteresting one. Although itseems very useful in long termsto reach the local customsofficers and make themrecognise IELA Members; we areall aware that the actions will belimited by government policies aswell as customs officers’ personalvision. Therefore, it seems to allof us, as a local and internal issuerather than being a global issue. So, it would be the best for eachIELA Member to try to maintaingood relations with local customswith their own efforts (as wealready do).
6. How can we interact morewith UFI? With the suggestion byRavinder Sethi, we are lookingfor ways to have some news fromIELA on monthly UFI Newsletter.Hope to give you more newsabout this in the next IELAReport.
