Campuses and locationsFedUni has six Victorian-based campuses and a campus in Brisbane, Queensland. A student support centre also operates out of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Our spaciousVictorian campuses are in picturesque settings, whilst our other operations are incosmopolitan city centres.

Mt Helen Campus (Ballarat, Victoria)

FedUni’s main Ballarat campus, Mt Helen, is surrounded by a peaceful bushlandsetting. Just minutes from the bustling centre of Ballarat and 110km from theMelbourne city centre, there is on campus public transport stops that contribute toa stress free commute.The Campus boasts a state-of-the-art science and engineering building, immersivenursing labs, lecture theatres, 24 hour access computer labs, library, spiritualfacilities, student lounges, café, eating areas and a children’s centre.There is also a range of recreation spaces including an indoor heated pool,gymnasium, gymnastics hall, active studio and tennis courts.The Mt Helen Campus is home to the thriving and innovative Ballarat TechnologyPark, with major employers such as IBM® and the State Revenue Office among its tenants.

Gippsland Campus (Churchill, Victoria)

The Gippsland Campus is FedUni’s second largest Campus and is located in thetown of Churchill in Victoria’s south-east, approximately 150km east of theMelbourne city centre.

The Campus features modern architecture and is set on 60 hectares of stunninglandscaped grounds. Science, engineering, nursing and midwifery labs have thelatest equipment, and students have access to a multi-level library, computer labsand wireless internet throughout the Campus.

A wide range of facilities for students are provided including a sporting centre, golfcourse, indoor heated pool, gymnasium, student lounge, art gallery, bistro, diningareas and more.

BallaratBallarat is approximately 110 km north-west of the Melbournecity centre. One of Australia’s largest inland cities, it is the thirdlargest in Victoria, with an estimated population of 100,000people.

Ballarat is a city of stature, elegance and history. The lure of golddrew people from all over the world during the 1850s. Today,education, health and community services, manufacturing,tourism and retail are the key industries in the city.

Schools and hospitals service a wide area extending acrosswestern Victoria. The recreation facilities are also an importantcommunity asset. Ballarat has a diverse range of communitygroups, service clubs, sporting clubs and arts based groupscatering for a full spectrum of people and interests.

T R A N S P O RT: Ballarat is connected by an excellent bus network. Train and busservices operate between Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station and the Ballarat Station. A one-way journey is approximately 1.5 hours duration. To connect to the Mt HelenCampus a bus service operates from the Ballarat Station at half hourly intervals. Traveltime is 25 minutes from the Ballarat Station. There is also an excellent freeway networkthat connects Melbourne and Ballarat if you prefer to drive a car. This journey is 1.5hours duration.

GippslandThe Gippsland Campus in Churchill is approximately 160 km eastof Melbourne. Churchill is one of four major towns in the LatrobeValley, which has a population of over 73,000 people.

Known for its diverse range of industries, the Valley’s key sectorsinclude education, health, tourism, retail, manufacturing, powerproduction, agribusiness, forestry and paper.

Latrobe Valley boasts all of the recreational and cultural facilitiesof a large regional centre. The region is within easy drivingdistance of Victoria’s Mt Baw Baw Ski Resort, white water riversand coastal parks, including Wilson’s Promontory and theGippsland Lakes.

“Before I applied for the internship, I had anappointment with the Careers and Employmentteam. They suggested some strategies to apply tomy CV, so I did, submitted it and got an interviewcall. I was provided some example questions. Thatwas really helpful. It was a list of 100 questionsthat I went through three times.

“We then conducted a mock interview. After this,some of my weaknesses and strengths wereidentified. One of them was that I talk very fast so Ihad to be careful. Another thing was I had an issuewith shaking hands, because in my culture we don’tnormally shake hands. Here in Australia, it’sexpected by employers when they do interviews. SoI did two things from the next day onwards, Istarted to shake hands with everyone for noreason, and reviewed those questions.

”I think I was successful with securing theinternship because I had good preparation, myskills and present experience was very muchrelated to the employment. I also had great helpand assistance from Employment and Careers atthe University.

English language coursesFederation University Australia provides great opportunities forstudents who need a pathway into an undergraduate orpostgraduate program.

Help to meet English language requirementsEnglish and Academic Preparation (EAP) courses are available at FedUni. Theseprograms are designed to assist international students to gain entry into highereducation degrees that require an Academic IELTS of 6.0 or 6.5.

Study can be as short as 5, 10, 15 and 20 weeks and give students a great start toacademic success.

Geotechnical and Hydrogeological Engineering Research Group(GHERG)GHERG works closely with government and industry to further improve the safety andsustainability of the open-cut mines that surround the Gippsland Campus. Funded by theVictorian Government (through the Department of Environment and Primary Industries),GHERG focuses on the key issues affecting open-cut mines in the Latrobe Valley, includingslope stability, groundwater impacts, environmental rehabilitation and the long-termsustainability of mine sites.

Researching Adult and Vocational Education (RAVE)RAVE is a group of experienced researchers in adult and vocational education in the Facultyof Education and Arts.

Water Research NetworkThe Water Research Network was established in late 2014 when the water research strengthsof the Collaborative Research Network (CRN), Water in Drylands Collaborative ResearchProgram (WIDCORP) and the Centre for Environmental Management (CEM) were merged.

Wimmera Research GroupThe aim of this research group is to contribute to a sustainable future for rural and regionalareas in Australia by undertaking research focused on building sustainable communities incollaboration with the local community and organisations.


Nanya StationFederation University Australia’s 40,000hectare Nanya Station is a researchbase of national significance.

Nanya, located 140 km south of BrokenHill, is of high conservation significance,containing some of the best examples ofMallee and arid woodland ecosystems inNSW, along with a salt lake complex ofnational signi ficance.

Nearly 400 fl ora and fauna species havebeen recorded at Nanya, of which ninehave either not previously been recordedor, have restricted distribution in WesternNSW. There are 22 plant communities onNanya of which two are dominated byspecies not previously recorded in NSW.

Site infrastructure includes an automaticweather recording station and remoterain gauges at 16 sites across theproperty. Additionally three radio triang-ulation towers have been established tofacilitate radiotracking of fauna.

Accommodation facilities have beenupgraded and include accommodationfor up to 40, an ablution block with solarhot water service and a solar/windpower station. Sta ff and postgraduatestudents visit this station regularly andcarry out landscape scale researchprojects.

English languagerequirements for research A person for whom English is not theirfirst language must meet therequirements for English languageproficiency by achieving the minimumscore in a formal test of Englishlanguage proficiency.

Overseas applicants can meet Englishlanguage requirements for entry into aHigher Degree by Research by:

• Achieving at least the minimumscore in one of the following formaltests of English languageproficiency:

> IELTS (International LanguageTesting System) minimum score of6.5 with no band less than 6.0;

> TOEFL (American test of Englishas a Foreign Language) minimumscore of 580 plus a TWE (Test ofWritten English) a score of 5.0;

> TOEFL computer-based minimumscore of 237 plus a minimumscore of 22 in writing;

> TOEFL internet-based minimumscore of 92-93 plus a minimumscore of 22 in writing; or

• Under exceptional circumstances,applying for an exemption frombeing required to provide an IELTSor TOEFL score based on anexemption request with supportingevidence.

Higher Degree by Research Entry Requirements

Masters Degrees by ResearchMasters by Research will see candidates working with a principal supervisor, appointedby the Research Higher Degrees Sub Committee, with the approval of the relevantfaculty or school.

A minimum of one and a half years and a maximum of two years (full-time equivalent),these degrees are awarded on the basis of an externally examined thesis ofapproximately 40,000 words.

Academic entry requirementsAn applicant must:

• have graduated with or qualified for a four year honours bachelors degree, or degreewith honours, at least second class honours level, that included a dissertationdemonstrating the ability to undertake research at masters level; or

• hold qualifications and/or have demonstrated skills, experience, research, orpublications which are assessed as being at least equivalent to the qualificationsabove.

Applicants who do not meet the requirements will be required to undertake anadditional course of study equivalent to a fourth year of advanced undergraduate studyand research in the relevant field.

The English language requirement for general programs such as Art, Business and General Science is Academic IELTS 6.0 with noband less than 6.0 or equivalent.

5. Accept

Once you have provided alldocumentation and met all conditions,including passing SSVF Assessment,please pay the amount listed at “Totalfee due in advance” and forward acopy of the receipt to InternationalAdmissions.

Once payment is confirmed, theUniversity will issue an electronicConfirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

You will need your CoE to apply foryour Australian student visa. Moreinformation on the visa applicationprocess available at border.gov.au

6. Arrival

The University will send you anInternational Student Support Guide withinformation about pre-arrival,accommodation, studying, living andworking information for students at ourcampuses.

You will also receive information aboutthe compulsory International StudentOrientation Program that is held in theweeks before semester commences.


International student feesCourse fees for tuition in this guideapply to international studentsstudying on-campus in Australia. Thefees listed are an annual amount, andthey are based on a standard studyload per year. Any variation to thestudy load will result in an adjustmentto tuition fees. All fees are subject toannual review and may be adjusted.Fees apply to students commencing in2018 only. Course tuition fees coverthe full cost of tuition but exclude thecost of living (housing and food),medical insurance, textbooks,entertainment, telephone calls,transport, as well as non-compulsorycourse expenses.

Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF)Under the Simplified Student Visa Framework, the University is required to ensure allprospective international students are meeting the Genuine Temporary Entrant criterion,and have the financial capacity to pay for tuition and living costs for the study period inAustralia.

The University reserves the right to apply a pre-visa screening process for all internationalapplications. International students must pass our pre-visa screening process beforeaccepting their offers and making payment, to obtain the Confirmation of Enrolment(CoE) letter. Students will need the CoE from the University to apply for a student visa.

Students must provide:

• Evidence of funds to cover all expenses for first 12 months of stay in Australia;

• Funds to be provided by applicant or a close relative with demonstrated income stream;

• Money deposits must continue to be held for a period of at least three months; and

• Declaration that applicant has access to sufficient funds to meet course fees, livingcosts, school costs and travel costs.

Students must also meet genuine temporary entrant (GTE) criterion by being a studentwho intends to obtain a successful educational outcome and has the language,educational and material background to have a reasonable chance of achieving thiseducational outcome.

Student visasAll overseas students are required to have an International Student Visa issued by theAustralian Government.

Student visas are issued for full-time study on the understanding that the studentcompletes their studies on campus, and has sufficient funds to cover tuition fees andliving expenses while in Australia.

Students must comply with their visa conditions in order to retain their visa. You may bereported to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) and your visamay be cancelled if you do not comply with the conditions of your visa.

You can apply for your Student Visa from the Department of Immigration and BorderProtection. For information regarding visas visit the DIBP website border.gov.au

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)Students must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) before a student visa canbe granted. The information for OSHC is included in your offer letter. The University willpurchase health cover on your behalf through Bupa Australia Health.

However, if you wish to purchase your OSHC through another provider please advise theInternational Admissions team of your membership details. Your OSHC must cover yourwhole student visa period, and you must not arrive in Australia before the OSHC start date.
