ICAN is established under an act of Parliament, the Nepal Chartered Accountants Act, 1997 to enhance social recognition and faith in accounting profession by raising public awareness towards the importance of the accounting profession, towards economic and social responsibility of the accountants and towards economic development of the country through the development of awareness among the professionals about their responsibility towards the importance of accountancy in order to develop, protect and promote the accounting profession.
One of the objectives of ICAN is to enhance the confidence among the investors, bankers and general public towards capital market by providing insight into the different aspects of the economic activities and by pronouncing the standards of disclosure in financial reporting practices.

About the Conference
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN) will be organizing
one day International Conference on the theme “Merger & Acquisition of Banking & Insurance Sector” at Kathmandu on Friday, 31st of January 2014 (corresponding to 17th of Magh 2070) coinciding with its 17th Annual Day Programme.
The conference shall focus on the accounting of merger and acquisitions and prevailing practices thereon. Now a day, in global phenomena merger and acquisition are the two important aspects of corporate strategy, corporate finance and management dealing with buying and selling of two or more entities in to a single entity that can help an enterprise to grow rapidly in its sector. A large number of such activities are being taken place across the globe. In this area, Nepal is also no exception and bank and financial institution are merging each other day by day rapidly.
In present context, merger and acquisition in banking and insurance sector is taking high priority but numbers of issues are to be addressed while in completion. One of the principal objectives behind the mergers and acquisitions in the banking sector is to reap the benefits of economies of scale. Therefore, the conference aims to address the issues related with mergers and acquisitions in the Nepalese perspectives following accounting standards and practices thereon.
Accounting profession has changed its dimensions over the years. Rapid changes on regulatory front pose challenges for accountants and auditors in understanding and applying accounting standards in presentation and disclosure in financial statements. Furthermore, the Nepalese accounting fraternity is gearing up towards reporting their financial transaction based on Nepal Financial Reporting Standards from the fiscal years 2014-15 onwards.
