Particular attention will be granted to the safety culture in nuclear and the associated

issues – education in safety culture, application of knowledge and skills of safety

culture, self-assessment and policy to improve the safety culture. It is expected that

the Kozloduy NPP experts will present their experience in the self-assessment study as

well as the new courses and approaches outlined by the Horizon 2020 CORONA II

international project.

Safety culture is a replica of the culture of the individual. What are the leading

elements that could impact on safety culture level, and how we have to tailor the

education policy – these topics we would like to emphasize.

The educational policy is a key element in the building of public

engagement/acceptance toward nuclear applications including energy production.

We believe the conference environment shall help in creating and engaging more

young professionals in nuclear engineering and applications.

Objectives The conference will provide to academic and industrial experts a common forum to present and discuss the news and issues concerning nuclear technology and nuclear applications. The “Nuclear power for the people” conference aims also to bring together nuclear specialists, to present their results and to raise the interest of the general public to the achievements and uses of nuclear science and technologies.

Participants Bulgarian and foreign experts, professionals, researches, professors and authorities related to the nuclear energy will take part.

PLOVDIV EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2019

Plovdiv is the oldest city in Europe - continuously inhabited

place, since the II millennium BC. Plovdiv is a contemporary of the ancient cities of Troy and Mycenae. Plovdiv was given various names throughout its long history: Evmolpia – until middle of the IV century BC, Filipopolis - at the time of Philip II of Macedon, Pulpudeva - at the time of the Thracians, Trimontsium - in the Roman era, Filibe – during the Ottoman rule Puldin - in Old Bulgarian sources

Plovdiv is a city with extraordinary destiny, having witnessed many historical vicissitudes. Its eight-thousand-years history has granted the right to be considered coeval of the human civilization and one of the oldest cities in Europe.

Shining antiquity, middle ages with elements from the Orient, renaissance and baroque with unique succession of folklore tradition build the main texture of the contemporary city center up to nowadays. The city is a cross point of cultures and landmarks, religions and beliefs, center of routes connecting countries and continents.

In the II century AD was called …the largest and most beautiful of all cities you can imagine. Its beauty shines from faraway. And a very big river – Hebar flows in the foots of its hills… by Lucian of Samosata

25 Years of BgNS

•BgNS was founded 25 year ago, in 1991. Members of BgNS are more than 400 individuals and 12 organizations which subject of activities is nuclear science and application for peaceful purposes.

•One of the main challenges which the nuclear community faces nowadays is very complicated and difficult for solving – the education of students and training of young specialists and the preservation and transfer of nuclear knowledge is counterbalanced by the recent trends of ageing of the nuclear workforce, declining student numbers in nuclear related fields, and the threat of losing accumulated nuclear knowledge.

The activities of the Bulgarian Nuclear Society are targeted at

Sharing knowledge about application of nuclear science and technologies aimed at improving the quality of life.

Changing the general public attitudes towards nuclear energy.

Collaborating with the governmental institutions, education and business organizations, NGOs etc. in the field of nuclear science and practice.

BgNS conference 2009,

Veliko Tarnovo

The BgNS TRANSACTIONS is a science and technology journal, issued since May 1996. Up to now there are 20 volumes printed. The journal is distributed to the National Library, the Bulgarian Academy of Science, papers’ authors, BgNS members. It is available for international exchange.

WiN-Bulgaria Association was established in 1996. Later became a member of the International Organization WIN–Global (Women In Nuclear). More than 50 women from Kozloduy NPP, Bulgarian Academy of Science and many other companies, are members of WiN-Bulgaria.

Technical visit to Krsko NPP

• Bulgarian Nuclear Society Young Generation Network was set up in 1999. It unites young Bulgarian specialists working in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful use and are below the age of 36. The number of members is about 80.

YGN Workshop

• BgNS is member of the ENS since 1991. • “ENS is the largest society for nuclear science, research and industry in Europe.

Ever since its foundation in 1975 it has been promoting the advancement of nuclear science, research and engineering to its members, decision makers and the general public. The Society’s membership includes national nuclear societies from 22 countries in Europe plus Israel. ….. about 60 corporate members, representing key stakeholders which are partners for nuclear technology and research in Europe.” (www.euronuclear.org)

Competitions for best young specialists’ presentation are arranged from 2005 every year. In this relation and after so many years of experience we can affirm that the competition is a good approach for the young contestants to carry out valuable projects, to benefit from the feedback for their presentation and by this way to feel themselves more important and needed in the society.

The conference provides a common forum to academic and industrial experts to present and discuss the news and problems concerning nuclear technology, nuclear safety, nuclear culture as well as nuclear applications in medicine. The conferences by its press-releases, briefings, and open letters based on conference’ conclusions try to provoke the interest of the general public to the latest achievements and uses of nuclear science and technologies.

The annual BgNS conferences, whose main aim is to spread the nuclear science and technology knowledge and achievements, have been carried out continuously from 1994 till 2015, almost every year. “Nuclear energy for the people” is the basic title of the conference from 2015.
