Sisters and Brothers, August is upon us and summer-time is almost over. School will be starting soon for the Inside apprentices. Classes begin earlier this year and start on Monday, August 24th. Enjoy the last days of summer. On the Inside out-of-work List we have 4 on Book 1, 14 on Book 2 and 1 on Book 3. On the Sound & Communication out-of-work List we have 3 on Book 1, 1 on Book 2 and 1 on Book 3. We have 4 on CW Book 2. We currently have all Inside apprentices working. Work has picked up significantly for us beginning in July. We have been able to put a lot of people back to work and have had a number of calls going unfilled recently. To date, we have started 11 new Inside apprentices. Our Books are the lightest they have been in years. I have scheduled an information meeting for the membership, including retirees and spouses, to talk about and discuss Health & Welfare issues on Thursday, August 20th at 5pm. The meeting will take place at the Union Hall and Training Center in Castroville. Anyone wanting to come talk about H&W issues, especially the proposed rate increases for retirees, should attend. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVP with Mira at (831) 633-2311. I am in the process of updating our Bylaws. The last time they were updated was April 15, 2013 which was mostly to include the Construction Electrician/Construction Wireman classifications. There are some classifications that need to be removed as they are no longer in use or relevant. The main point for updating the Bylaws is to delete the sentence “When the quarterly audit indicates the balance in the General Fund is $350,000.00 or more, the working dues shall be reduced to 2% of gross earnings, and when the quarterly audit indicates the balance in the General Fund is $275,000.00 or less, the working dues shall be increased to 3% of gross earnings.” This would keep the Working Dues at a consistent 6% for the Inside and not fluctuate between 5 and 6% depending on the balance of the General Fund. Had we made this change years ago, the Local would be in much better financial shape today. In order to change the Bylaws a proposal must be submitted in writing and read at two regular meetings of the Local Union, and decided at the second meeting by a majority vote of the members present and voting. Since the changes deal with dues the vote has to be taken by secret ballot at the meeting where the second reading takes place. I will be sending out a written notice specifically stating the proposed changes to each member at least twenty (20) days prior to the Local Union meeting at which the membership is to vote on the question. Save the date for our annual family picnic to be held on Saturday, October 10th at the Buckeye Picnic Area of Toro Park. More details will be made available closer to the date. We will again be holding a Health Fair that day as well. Friday, September 4th is a Floating Holiday that is observed by the Inside and Sound & Comm. Monday, September 7th, Labor Day , is also a Holiday for the Inside and Sound & Comm. Inside Monthly Hours Report

Forever Lifting Up – Always Moving Forward

The history of the EWMC has its roots in the Civil Rights movement and the struggle for equal rights for minority workers in the IBEW. Minority communities wanted greater opportunities to join the IBEW and minority members in the IBEW saw the need to strengthen and grow IBEW membership.

In 1974, African American and Hispanic delegates met during the 30th IBEW International Convention in Kansas City, Missouri, and formed the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus to address the lack of minority representation and other inequalities within the IBEW.

The EWMC believes that the IBEW must embrace principles and actions of Diversity and Full Inclusion to organize, prosper and grow. Minorities, women, and communities of color must be mobilized and organized to grow the trade union movement.

Due to many years leadership by EWMC President Robbie Sparks, an IBEW Business Manager from Atlanta, Georgia, resolutions at IBEW International Conventions were adopted that committed the IBEW to Diversity and Full Inclusion. The success of the EWMC is essentially due to a strong vision and belief in the abilities of people of color, and that all must be included to strengthen and grow our IBEW.

The EWMC is a strong advocate for equal rights, opportunities, and greater minority representation in the IBEW. The EWMC is well respected by the IBEW and the labor movement because of its strong commitment and vigorous pursuit of social and economic justice for minority workers.

The Caucus serves as a support and networking system, and provides education and training for its members. The membership reflects a broad-based coalition of dedicated IBEW men and women who work within the IBEW structure to forge changes that will benefit minorities and the entire IBEW membership.

The EWMC Executive Committee is comprised of twelve elected officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and eight (8) At-Large members. The rules governing the EWMC are contained in the organization’s national operating bylaws.

August 2015 California State Certification Renewals Have you recently renewed your Electrician Certification? Do you know when your certification expires? Notify the Hall of your new expiration date and certification number. Also, pick up any forms you need at the Hall or request copies of Class Completion Certificates to provide proof of education. If you are renewing your Electrician Certification prior to your certification expiring, you will need to have 2,000 hours of work in the industry in the past three years and have completed 32 hours of continuing education from an approved educational provider, like the JATC. You will then need to submit your Renewal Application with proof of your 32 hours and payment of $100. As always, call the Hall and talk with Mira or call Stacy with the Training Center if you have any questions.

Tricks of the Trade Tips for installing wire nuts on wires of different sizes.

Match up the wire to where the insulation ends before twisting, not the tip. Stranded and thinner wires should be longer. Try to put larger conductors on the outside. Always cut excess larger conductor so the wire nuts have something of the other

conductors to hold. Always pull check the conductors to make sure all are secure. When there's only stranded, untwist it and fan it out individually before twisting it

together.

August 2015 The LMCC has approved to send up to two individuals to a Market-Driven Contracting Class in San Leandro this Fall. This two-week course (one week each over a six week period) has been designed to prepare individuals to enter the electrical contracting field with a commitment to pursue underserved sectors in the marketplace. The course will cover a full range of learning modules that will provide participants with a formal and practical introduction to business concepts and their application to electrical contracting.
