The Associate in Applied Science Degree in Interior Design is a 66-credit-hour program that prepares students for careers in interior design or transfer to a four-year institution. Interior designers are involved in planning the interior spaces of almost all buildings, including offices, airport terminals, theaters, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals and private residences. Designers’ jobs are important and essential to construction because they help increase productivity, attract clientele and increase the building’s market value. FLORISSANT VALLEY FOREST PARK MERAMEC WILDWOOD ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Interior Design program at St. Louis Community College-Meramec emphasizes a strong foundation in visual art skills, architecture and space planning. Utilizing these foundations, students develop creative projects using a systematic approach to the design process. Coursework includes solving interior design- related problems by developing free-hand and drafting skills, computer skills and oral presentation skills. Issues in sustainable design are also explored within the studio environment. Completion of the program requires two full academic years. Students are able to enter the program part-time, and evening classes are offered throughout the academic year. In addition, STLCC maintains a transfer agreement with the Maryville University Interior Design Program and University of Missouri, Columbia. Students also have the option of earning a Certificate of Proficiency in Kitchen and Bath Design. The Critical Difference Students at STLCC develop their skills in state-of- the-art facilities, using the latest industry standard software programs: AutoCAD, REVIT, 20.20, Photoshop and Google Sketchup. They learn from instructors who are professionals in the interior design field. Students may become involved in student chapters of professional organizations, including the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). In addition, students participate in community service projects that not only benefit the community, but also give students real world experience in the field of interior design. Most importantly, the program is accredited by NASAD, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The program boasts many successful graduates. OPPORTUNITIES IN THIS FIELD In general, the interior design field is expected to grow at a faster-than-average pace in the coming years, with an anticipated 19% increase in job opportunities between 2006 and 2016. Graduates of the Interior Design program are qualified for entry-level positions in residential and/or commercial interior design and related fields. Many find employment in St. Louis. In addition to employment with general architecture and interior design firms, opportunities exist in the healthcare and hospitality industries, at wholesale showrooms and retail stores, and with firms specializing in kitchen and bath, lighting and office design. Graduates also may be employed as manufacturers’ product representatives, freelance designers or facilities planning assistants. SALARY INFORMATION Interior design salaries vary with the specialty, type of employer, years of experience, and professional reputation. Among salaried interior designers, those in large specialized design and architectural firms tend to earn higher and more stable salaries. Interior designers working in retail stores usually earn a commission, which can be irregular. Self-employed interior designers must provide their own benefits.
