Our Common Welfare

Each member of Alcoholics Anonymous is but a small part of a great whole. A.A. must continue to live or most of us will surely die. Hence our common welfare comes first. But individual welfare follows close afterward.—Tradition One (Long Form) It is hoped that our common suffering as alcoholics and our common solution in A.A. will transcend most issues and curtail negative behaviors that could jeopardize the safety of anyone at-tending an A.A. meeting. Nevertheless, Alcoholics Anonymous is a microcosm of the larger society we exist in. As such, problems found in the outside world can also make their way into the rooms of A.A. For this reason, groups and members discuss the topic of safety — to raise awareness in the Fellowship and to seek through sponsorship, workshops and meetings, to create as safe an environment as possible to carry A.A.’s message of hope and recovery to the still-suffering alcoholic.

Suggested Statement on Safety

Our group endeavors to provide a safe meeting place for all attendees and encourages each person here to con-tribute to fostering a secure and welcoming environment in which our meetings can take place. As our Tradi-tions remind us, the formation and operation of an A.A. group resides with the group conscience. Therefore, we ask that group members and others refrain from any behavior which might compromise another person’s safety. Also, please take the precautions you feel are necessary to ensure your own personal safety, for example, walking to your car in a group after a meeting. If a situation should arise where someone feels their safety is in jeopardy, or the situation breaches the law, the individuals involved should take appropriate action. Calling the proper au-thorities does not go against any A.A. Traditions and is recommended when someone may have broken the law

AA’s Twelve Steps are principles for personal recovery. The Twelve Traditions ensure the unity of the Fellowship. The Twelve Concepts for World Service provide a group of related principles to help ensure that various elements of A.A’s service structure remain responsive and responsible to those they serve. Step Two: “Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.” Tradi-tion Two: “For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.” Concept Two: “When, in 1955, the A.A. groups confirmed the permanent charter for their General Service Conference, they thereby delegated to the Confer-ence complete authority for the active maintenance of our world services and thereby made the Conference excepting for any change in the Twelve Traditions or in Article 12 of the Conference Charter the actual voice and the effective conscience for our whole Society.”

I AM A CHILD OF GODBattered and bruised by years of drinking, crazyand mixed up in behavior and thinking.

Shut off for years from the sunlight of theSpirit; feeling worthless, unloved and unfit.

Then I heard a voice that said “you are loved.”He raised me from the trash pile, my God.

I surrendered to Him and He held me close, mytears running free; “You are mine, and you are worthy.”

Sober through God’s grace and working the 12Steps each day, I can smile in the mirror today.
