During January 2015 residents (owners, tenants and off-site owners) were invited to participate in a satisfaction survey of the centurion Residential estate and country club. A total of 187 members participated over a 14 day period. Several comments were received that will be attended to. The overall weighted average on all responses from all questions amounted to 80.4%, this year’s evaluation is thus 2.2% lower than last year.

The tail wagging, the excited barking, the dark wet nose and the pink tongue – a happy dog greeting you on arrival back home is one of the most endearing things. They love you regardless of how long you have been absent, they don’t bear grudges and even protect you and your family from intruders or act as an alarm if there is something wrong - even if that lurking danger is an ibis on the lawn…

Many residents of the centurion Residential estate and country club are the proud owners of pets, whether it is pedigree or mutt, rescued stray or long awaited, specially bred and imported animal, reptile or bird.

Pet ownership has inherent obligations and responsibilities – the pets have to have access to sufficient fresh water and shade (especially in the recent heat wave conditions), sufficient food and their excrement has to be cleaned. The pets are to be treated when sick or injured and kept safe from harm.

But the above is not the only responsibility pet owners have. The type of animal kept is an important factor as some animals that could be considered as potentially dangerous to humans or other animals, whether a poisonous snake or other reptile or bird of prey, burdens the owners with additional responsibilities. The type of breed of an animal kept is a further important factor as certain breeds of dogs are known to be more vicious than others. it is expected that your dog, whether it is a teacup size Terrier or a Spaniel, a Rottweiler or a Golden Retriever, is socialised and trained to ensure that it is more tolerable of both humans and other dogs.

The city of Tshwane recently issued updated by-laws regulating the pet ownership within the metropolitan municipality. All owners of animals are urged to obtain a copy and peruse same, especially as the metropolitan municipality is seriously enforcing these by-laws with fines and other actions.

Possibly the most important by-law is the curbing of pet ownership in terms of the number of dogs and cats per normal residential property. These limitations will be enforced regardless of the size of the dogs or the purpose for being kept, example breeding.

it is also important to note that your dog is to be leashed at all times when not inside your property and that it is an offence not to clean up after your dog when in public places. This will also be a very good idea just walking your dog within the estate,

to ensure that you have a clean environment to walk in and that you leave the environment as clean as you found it for the other residents.

Dogs may not cause a disturbance by barking, howling or crying. no dog that appears to be aggressive or dangerous may be kept where it could cause injury to other persons or animals. it is a very good idea to secure proper written warnings at all entrances to your property should you keep guard dogs irrespective of the breed.

For all residents of the centurion Residential estate and country club, it is important to note that no person may set a dog onto another person or animal and that no

person may provoke, harass or tease a dog. no person may scare or cause stress to any dog with fireworks or by any other means.

We have vast case law on the responsibility of animal owners in the case of an attack on other animals and owners setting the precedent for courts to follow. Depending on the circumstances, the pet owner remains the responsible person f o r damages caused by such animal to another animal or human being including bodily harm, loss of income or even future medical expenses.

But what are your rights when your

pet is attacked by another animal?

The circumstances surrounding the attack will, to a large extent, determine your rights and the responsibility of the owner of the other animal. The first, and most important, is where your pet was at the time of the attack. if your dog had escaped from your property, whether you have negligently left the gate open or were “just arriving home”, generally both owners will be liable as both animals were on public property.

if the attack is on your property, with the other animal entering, even just through the gate, the owner of the animal is liable as that animal was clearly roaming the streets, not being safely contained on the owner’s property. in such circumstances, the SPcA can investigate the circumstances as to why the other animal was not being properly contained and the suitability of such persons to have pets at all.

it will be your responsibility, as the owner of the injured animal, to approach the owner of the other animal to carry the relevant veterinarian cost and other damages you have suffered. For you, as an owner of an animal, are to ensure that your animals remain safe on your property, do not roam freely in the streets and do not harm or cause harm to the pets of other residents.

Whether you use your pet as a companion, to lower your stress levels and blood pressure as science has proven, or as a jogging buddy, friend and playmate for your children or guardian to you, your family and your belongings, ensure that you take proper care of your pet’s physical and emotional needs but also its safekeeping and the safety of your co-residents, their visitors and their animals.

CApTAIN’s reportit is really scary to think that by the time you are reading this we will already be in March, club championships will be done and dusted (weather permitting) and our leagues will have started. i am not sure if it is an age thing or if everyone agrees that time seems to be flying!

The inaugural monthly Mercedes Betterball competition was played on 14 February 2015 and the winners of the day were Brett and Sue Smith on 47 points (oco). Well done to them - enjoy the Mercedes test drive weekend. For the rest of us, keep practising as there is not only a Mercedes for the weekend, but also a superb prize up for grabs at the end of the year. Well done to Jannes for initiating this monthly competition!

The start of the year always sees the start of the Knockouts and following a record number of entries last year, i hope that we can build on this and see even greater interest this year. Please go into the shop and book your spot.

our Annual Golf AGM is scheduled for April 2015 and i would urge that members attend. This is the night where we will elect our new captain as well as our new office bearers. There are a number of places available on both the Men’s and Ladies committees’ so if you are interested in serving on the committee, please liaise with errol so the necessary protocols can be followed.

The next monthly captains challenge will be on 28 March 2015. This will be my final one before my two year term ends, so be sure to attend (there may be some surprises!). Please don’t forget to support Hokaai for all your needs – they really go out of their way to help us after all!

Mercedes Benz Betterball Challenge

This past week (16 to 20 February 2015), i was fortunate enough to represent centurion country club at the World Pro Am championships in Kwa-Zulu natal. My team was made up of Flip Diedericks, Lefty Piagalis and Avgerinos Piagalis.

over the course of the week we played five of the countries’ best golf courses including Durban country club , Zimbali, Mount edgecombe, Prince’s Grant and cotswold Downs. This was the most amazing experience with teams from all over South Africa as well as Sweden and Australia.

We managed to play consistent rounds enabling us to take 5th position in the team event. A huge thanks to my team for a wonderful golfing week!

on the weekend of 14 February 2015 we hosted our first Mercedes Benz BetterBall challenge. This event was extremely well received with all tee off times fully booked.

The day was won by the team of Sue and Brett Smith. They will receive a demo car for a weekend, sponsored by Mercedes Benz centurion. They are the first team to qualify for the finals to battle it out for the advanced driving experience. Good luck!
